Well, after about a week of work, I've finished a promotional "poster" for my next-to-be-made Flash series. This is my first attempt at a CG Photoshop colored pic, and I think it came out well. Tell me what you think. Advanced Critique Encouraged.From left to right: Steak, Tater, Dumpling and Parsley. They're all named after foods...foods that represent them in some way or another.
The plot is that of a psychological teenage drama. But, this is no "The O.C." or some crap. This will be an 9 or 10 part series about 4 teenagers and how they each cope with life. This is real. This is not how Hollywood decides to show teenagers growing up, with their so-called "problems." It will have a little comedy, but mainly it will just talk about how the youth of today get by in life...without taking sides.
I want to do a serious Flash cartoon. Not only to show that I'm capable of more than just toilet jokes or "the Hate-dar." I want to show that I'm capable of writing a story that captivates people. Selfish reasons aside, I want to show the internet that a serious Flash series is possible, despite everyone having the idea that the only Flash cartoons that are made involve fart jokes and Megaman sprites...or is that webcomics?...doesn't matter.
Tools used: My handy-dandy tablet (for drawing...couldn't live without it), Macromedia Flash 8 (for lineart), and Photoshop 7.0 (for everything else)

PPS-I will finish Hyperboy. It's just that Hyperboy is all planned out in my mind. I know what to do and how to do it. This is the series I'm currently writing, so I can work on it after Hyperboy.

To be honeest, this would have to be my least favorite, it seems good, but your other stories blow this one away.

Your idea to make a "real" teen drama/serious animation with flash is quite daunting...i hope you the best...The characters are all very different and varied which is a rarity in today's teen "dramas"...
Also if research is necessary(or just to watch teen shows done right) try some 90's teen dramaedies such as "Freaks and Geeks" and "My So Called Life" If memory serves me...They were very funny, very ACCURATE depictions of teenagers...The shows themselves are also well acted and enjoyable...
However "M.S.C.L" is a tad bit dated due to the fact that is was set in the 90's...but "F and G", which is set in the 80's seems like it held up a lot better because it came out during the late 90's..I myself would go straight to "Freaks and Geeks"...Its hilarious...Im sorry for rambling on..but most comments i read pretty much only mention Hyperboy and totally bypassed the art at hand...

Thanks! I heard good things about those shows...I'm glad there are some shows that are closer to the truth. But, teenage drama is still a lot grittier than they could possibly show...there's a lot of non-TV friendly material.

although the back ground and colors are Realy nice, some how the blended colors throw off the usual feel of your works. although i guess if this is a serious flash then a more realistic tone would be desiered. it's a good pic it just feels out of place ore something. i guess it's like u said, i've come to exspect the hate dar from you :

I had trouble getting the right tone for the picture. The actual animation is more similar to my usual style. Simple shading.

Awesome new idea. I will be keeping up with this series too. Can't wait for Hyperboy...nothing can beat the funny...It is kinda wierd though...my friend and I act out parts from Hyperboy, it is so dag AWESOME! Anyway, good luck with the new series and can't wait to see hyperboy.

Hypes, there are more serious flash out there than you think. The problem is that they all suck and not many people care to spread the word to their friends. Personally, I think the main problem is that they always have terrible voice-acting. Unless you have a really good microphone and a good voice, it's hard to like.

I think it's because of bad writing. They try too hard to make them serious. Voice acting is not important if the characters are relatable.

I know how Hyperboy ends. I'm just animating what is already planned in my mind.
This next series requires serious PLANNING. Which is why I'm starting now. Frankly, it doesn't even interfere with me making Hyperboy.

Ah. its good you decided to make a serious flash animation. Ive considered it myself but sometimes find difficulty in the concept. I think the reason for most flash artists tendancy to avoid serious projects is that sometimes its hard to take the very look of the animation seriously wich usually looks very cartoon like and gives of a sense of comedic presence in the artwork. That is, it just doent look very gritty and therefore is not taken seriously in most cases. But i think, with the properly written story, you should be able to pull it off. Good luck and i look foward to it.

Thanks a lot. I don't think the art style is important, it's how you present it. Even the happiest of images can be depressing if done right. And yes...it relies very heavily on dialogue and inner monologue.
