Take a look at bywat.co.uk to get a background on this and many more English Electric Canberra aircraft.
The last flying model in the RAF, the PR9, Was a fantastic photo reconnaissance air frame. This declassified image shows the clock face of big ben, clearly readable having been photographed at 47 thousand feet over the Isle of White!

A sad metaphor for the current state of both the Royal Air Force and the UK's ability to design and build aircraft.

It is indeed. I look forward to the need for a more positive one

It is. It doesn't take allot to do some minor maintenance. The top photograph from 2004 here shows here looking allot healthier with the bare metal on the tail. All they needed to do was slap some paint on there to prevent that corrosion

That's... that's just sad, specially knowing that it will be scrapped sooner or later...

I remember doing end of runway checks on the US vesion (B57). The engines at idle would just howl right through you.

They were anything but quiet those RR Avon engines!

Our US models had Wright J65 engines. They still did howl though!

in-my-viewfinder In reply to SwiftFlyer [2012-01-16 09:50:50 +0000 UTC]

I bet they did!
The J65 is the same as a Sapphire engine as fitted to the Hawker Hunter and those really do mack a racket!

Only two built and both are treated in such a manner? Pretty sad for these aircraft.

according to bywat they did build 22 B(I)6's according to bywat of which this was the second. Not sure on what survivors there are but I would be willing to guess that.
Sadly you can't really see what made this Interdiction model different from the standard B6 as the cannon blister is not fitted to the bomb bay and no obvious signs of pylons remain on the wings

I must have read it wrong then. It's an interesting airframe to say the least. Sort of looks like the old Boeing B-47. Namely the cockpit location.

in-my-viewfinder In reply to helopilotoh58 [2012-01-13 14:13:00 +0000 UTC]

The B-57 and Canberra are one and the same thing. The Canberra was made under licence by Boeing as the B-57. I would hazard a guess that the B-47 probably shares allot with the Canberra as a first generation jet bomber.

They probably do share alot of similarities.
