Also, are Tokyo subways/trains really that clean that people feel alright pressing their faces against the seat? XDD

(Great shot!)

Japanese people don't feel like trashing everything the way Americans do. Whenever I go back to America I'm always surprised at how gross movie theaters and everything are.

I'd heard stories from my parents about how much cleaner Japan was... But they were there in the seventies/eighties, so I'd half-thought the filthier aspects of western civilization had caught up, by now. I'm glad they haven't!

(I've always lived in America, but I'm also consistently surprised by the dirty conditions of some public places.)

OgawaBurukku In reply to novernil [2011-07-22 02:58:49 +0000 UTC]

Oddly enough, most Japanese people don't feel like washing their hands with soap when they use the restroom, so it may LOOK clean but when one person gets sick here EVERYONE gets sick. Many bathrooms don't even have soap D:

novernil In reply to OgawaBurukku [2011-07-25 21:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Really? That's something I definitely didn't know.

I think it's the same thing here... (Except soap is usually available. There are many Americans who are just dirty, dirty people. >.<) But I've always seen in documentaries, and things, how some people in Japan will go so far as to wear face masks when they're sick, so they lesson the risk of spreading it. It would be great if Americans would do that. Instead of just sneezing and coughing over everything.

I work in a library, so it really just takes one nasty person to spread something to all the students.

I'll just have to remember to buy hand sanitizer if I ever get to visit. ^_^

OgawaBurukku In reply to novernil [2011-07-26 02:25:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they definitely do wear those masks (and I do too! I think it's a great idea, actually, and it covers up a runny nose better than having to wipe all the time).

I asked my husband why he doesn't wash his hands when he uses the restroom, and he said because he "doesn't touch anything". I asked why he washes his hand after cleaning up after the dog, even if he doesn't touch anything, and he said "because it's gross" before I think it donned on him that, oh hey, it's basically the same thing. I then told him that even if he "doesn't touch anything", he touches the flusher, where countless of total strangers have touched, and I think all this made his brain explode. Sometimes Japan thinks "if it looks clean, it is clean". They share food and when I worked in a pub people smoked while they were cooking food, and they used the cloth napkins the customers used to wipe off table tops when tables became open again.

I super freaked out when I found out my friend, who was a prostitute, didn't wash her hands after using the restroom. I was always uncomfortable when she handed me candy or whatever.

I carry hand sanitizer with me everywhere, haha.

novernil In reply to OgawaBurukku [2011-07-27 22:28:16 +0000 UTC]

Ha! I'll bet your husband is more dilligent at keeping his hands washed now.

I'm always seeing people step out of a stall, flip the water on, swipe their hands through, dry them and leave.

So I'm thinking, "Yuck. They touched EVERYTHING, with damp filthy hands." So I'm in the habit of readying a section of paper towels, washing my hands, and then using the paper towels to dry my hands, turn off the faucet, and then open the door. I think people are expected to do this, actually, since there's almost always a trash can right by the door.

But yeah, it's always good to be careful just who you except candy from. Especially if it's not pre-wrapped. XD

a bit sad and deep if u ask me. they sure have such a long hard working day and life. much society pressure, and can maybe just at some evening and night a week try to relax and feel well. and so they "prostitute" their mind and self respect for some hours of forgetting their life, drinking much alcohol and whatever, not caring what it makes with them after a time. just for short moments of joy that let them bear their day to day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

novernil In reply to hurzdischnurz [2011-07-20 21:41:09 +0000 UTC]

XD That's certainly a more interesting interpretation.

But judging by the faux prada bags and the fact that they're in matching, and generally unrevealing outfits (uniforms), prostitution doesn't seem too likely.

Still, I like that you like outside the box. ^_^

hurzdischnurz In reply to Oh-BLEEP [2011-07-21 07:40:05 +0000 UTC]

can be. but japanese are famous for their politeness and (self)respect. they would never do this under normal circumstances like a simple "sleepy" i guess.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Oh-BLEEP In reply to hurzdischnurz [2011-07-21 08:27:27 +0000 UTC]

The Japanese are also famous for working extremely hard.
Falling asleep on trains and buses is positively normal in Japan. It's an everyday thing, actually; salarymen and such are especially guilty of it.

I myself used to fall into deep sleeps on the bus after a particularly taxing day at school, so it's totally plausible.

but u wouldnt lay half dead like them there. is what i meant. and sure, i also sleep often in busses and trains,... but im different anyways

Oh-BLEEP In reply to hurzdischnurz [2011-07-21 17:47:49 +0000 UTC]

They look to be in a deep sleep... People tend to look half-dead in a deep sleep, especially when they're not in a normal sleeping position.

Google something like "Japanese public sleeping" and you'll see that this train pic is actually pretty darn tame, lol. Though I wouldn't dare sleep like this because, *scoff* I'm in America; people aren't very trustworthy around here.
