Either long day at work judging by their clothes or that was one hell of a company party. I'm actually jealous that Japan's trains have cushioned seats. Lucky!

You know you're in Japan when the women are asleep and their Vuitton bags are still there. ^^
Now they might just be overworked, because my friend ends up like that for having three hours of sleep a day for week(s) and certainly not partying, poor thing. They'll work her to the grave.

Some of the comments this piece is getting are actually rather disturbing. O_o'
I would think these women just got out of their jobs and they're exhausted. I just don't see girls partying in clothes like that.
The runs in their stockings would make anyone assume that they might have been partying, but it really just looks like she snagged them on something at work and was too busy to notice or fix the issue.
I feel bad for them-- this may be a normal occurrence for them, but from the show of hands in these comments, there's some nasty people out there that would probably take advantage of them. That and they just look so tired ): Almost wanna pull a blanket out and watch over them until they get home, you know?

I agree. Kind of creepy the sort of things people will say and think about a picture of two woman just sleeping. Honestly, I don't understand why everyone assumes it's okay to just snap pictures of strangers like this.

PepoFaec In reply to SetsunaNoroi [2011-07-20 14:49:12 +0000 UTC]

I think it's okay if people are making a public spectacle of themselves. Like, if they're doing something crazy, dressing up like a character or in a costume, holding a concert-- you know, that type of thing.
And have you caught all of the comments? A good bit of them creep me out thoroughly. I saw one comment that listed "I can picture myself in them" or something to that degree.
When I used to vacation with my parents, if someone wanted a photo of us- like if we were on a boat in the ocean, sharing an experience, they would ask if we could take a photo together- or if one of us were fishing or caught something, they would always ask. It's general respect. It's commendable. It makes me remember those people. ouo

I can certainly understand costumes. I go to several conventions and love taking pictures of people in their cosplay, as well as people taking pictures of my own costumes. Still, it's considered bad form to take one without permission. Of course, in those cases, people will often be happy to have the picture taken and will be estatic when you ask. I know I always am. XD

PepoFaec In reply to SetsunaNoroi [2011-07-20 15:45:39 +0000 UTC]

I would assume that's one of the reasons behind one would dress up for one of those. I've never been nor dressed up for one, so I'm still behind on this subject. I feel like if someone was taking a photo of me in a costume, they must really like the work I put into the costume or how I wear it ouo But if I didn't want to be photographed, I'd definitely just wear my casual clothes and hug the crowds lol <3 I'm a skittish person. I don't mind being photographed by my friends/family but the moment someone strange comes up to me with a camera, I tend to panic, cover my face, turn around, pull something over my head-- it's an anxiety thing.
Seeing my photo in the paper freaks me out to the point of just wanting to fall off the face of the planet. 'Specially if I was in the background, wasn't ready for it and I've got a face full of food and I look like a cow chewing on it's cud ini

hmm.. I think consent is needed for posting pictures of other people like this. but I guess that wouldn't be possible. but didn't you ever think that they didn't want this picture of them to be taken let alone posted in the internet where everyone can see?
how would you feel if someone did this to you? If you say it's okay, don't assume that others would feel the same way.
a little compassion perhaps?

I don't think anyone bothers with respecting people's privacy anymore.
I live in the Keys of Florida-- once, while I was walking down the street with my husband, a girl flashed her camera at us while on her scooter and sped off. I wanted to grab her by her hair and drag her down the street.
Some people are in hiding from bad people, you know? If that photo were to have been of someone else and the wrong person saw it and put two and two together, they'd be in trouble because of them.
But like everyone else says, no one seems to care anymore. Everyone in this world has lost their common sense or general respect for people and their privacy these days.

I really like this. A touch of humanity in a place most of us only see on TV and in books. A very interesting reminder that everything in this world is surely NOT the same as everywhere else. Amazing how pristine that commuter train is! In North America you are assailed with reek, graffiti, trash, spilled liquids, gum...not to mention the safety hazzards of falling asleep on public transport.

I wonder...did the girls miss their stop?

Canon2010 In reply to PepoFaec [2011-07-20 13:50:25 +0000 UTC]

Actually they do not, as an actual photojournalist sometimes one is not able to "seek" permission, however though this may not have been made under a photojournalism assignment, it still can be considered as such. Have you or any of the other negative nancies even bothered to look at his gallery? You'd be surprised at what you'll find there. I will not tolerate people that join deviantart, have no deviations, and then leave shitty comments on work that is not in the category they are claiming it to be. I do not know this person who has received the dd, but I will not stand by and see a fellow artist accused of being things they are not. I appreciate the time you took to respond to me, and with that said we shall simply have to agree to disagree.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

PepoFaec In reply to Canon2010 [2011-07-20 14:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I say that because of another comment that I've made on this deviation.
Some people are actually far away from home-- this may only mean cities away, because they're hiding from bad people.
There's always a chance that a photo of someone in hiding could make it's way back to someone who doesn't need to know their whereabouts. I actually have a few friends that are in that situation and it's depressing. When I take photos around them, I can't include them in any of them.
I live in the Florida keys. One day, I and my husband were walking down the street and some girl on her scooter drove up, snapped a photo of us and sped away. I don't like my photo being taken, nor do I like other people posting my photo without my approval. If she would have told me what it was for, I might have been willing to be okay with it. Like if it was only for a personal collection that she wouldn't be showing a mass audience or just a school project- but some people like to post it online or even in the paper. I didn't want that.
I understand your passion for photojournalism, but I also see how the privacy issue can be a REAL issue.
Also. Is the cursing necessary? I didn't curse or make a jump at you, I'm simply holding a conversation.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Canon2010 In reply to PepoFaec [2011-07-20 14:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Nor did I curse at you. If my use of the word shitty has offended you then I apoligize for doing so. The point I find hilarious is that everyone is assuming that he doesn't have permission to post this. First of all it was made in 2004. Secondly while in the public domain there is no such thing as privacy. Now if this photograph had been made where you could see up a skirt, or some rude angle, I could then understand the anger. I could assume a lot of things, like the photographer knew them and all is ok. It is not my place to decide that. I can understand making the photograph because life is not planned. This photograph is easy to relate to, regardless of the title because we all know what it is like to be tired, and sometimes one finds rest where they can. That is what I see when I look at this, and anything beyond that is pure speculation and has no place here regardless of your experiences. I highly recommend you never go into a bank, or a store, or anyplace that has a camera then. By your logic they do not have your approval, so I look forward to reading an article about someone who is going to go around demanding they never be looked at, or videotaped while in a store. Perhaps you should wear a veil.

Sheesh. Calm down. Personally, I think it's really wrong that this picture got posted. This isn't right and it certainly isn't any type of photojournalism. The "I'm just gonna snap a picture of people and post it and make a rude and presumptious remark about them," is not in anyway decent 'art'.

People all have your own opinions, and I doubt anyone cares what you will "tolderate" as if you could or even would do anything about it. I'd suggest getting of your little soap box and relax a bit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

PepoFaec In reply to SetsunaNoroi [2011-07-20 14:44:18 +0000 UTC]

Forgive me for using your comment to reply to this person, but they've seemed to block me for no reason e.e

"Security cameras are a different story. Normally one doesn't take a shot that's close enough to get a detailed face nor do they post it anywhere unless it's in a courtroom which is completely understandable.
I feel kinda offended that you would tell me to wear a veil. That almost feels a bit back handed, there. I could be wrong.
When one walks into a building with security cameras, or even gets on a roller coaster, they're in an understanding that they're on camera. However, it's personal once someone rides up and snaps a shot of you. What will they be doing with that photo and why?
I'm just saying that there should be a drawn line of respect when doing something like this. Even if you take the photo first and moments afterward ask to use it somewhere- at least effort was taken to ensure that things would be fine.
I feel like photographers these days have gotten sucked so far into the line of how paparazzi tend to act. We're not all celebrities- we didn't really sign up to be photographed when we're out in the streets. Yes, when we're vacationing or even walking around, we may get snapped into a photo with people taking photos with their friends, but it was never intentional. And it's almost doubtful that they'll be uploading it to a place where thousands of people will see unless it's facebook. But even then- it was never centered on you like these were.
The artist hasn't exactly made comments that I've found, yet, that says whether or not he has permission to show this photo, but whether or not that's true, it's what we're discussing. Right?"

And you're right Setsuna. Granted, the part about "decent art" kinda hurts my feelings a little. Art is art in my eyes, whether or not it's posted with permission. ): The photo tells a story, I think that's enough. I just wish I knew whether or not it was okay with the people in the photo. You know?

Didn't see the comment towards me at first, so I hope you don't mind the second reply.

My opinion on Photograghy is very, well I'll be honest, highly opinionated. I apologize sincerly if I came off offensive or snobbish in anyway. It's only that I do this professionally and I believe there should be standards to such things. Pictures like this I think are in just bad taste for many reasons, and it's a shame because it's actually a beatiful picture, but the theme and intent behind it sully that fact. Still, I hope I did not offend you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

jamesjr2 In reply to SetsunaNoroi [2011-08-22 01:01:11 +0000 UTC]

Intent behind it? Any intent other than showing a moment in time is only speculation by the viewer. My intent was never to put these girls into bad light, it was simply to show a life moment. And to answer your question about asking permission, no I didn't ask. One because I didn't want to disturb them, second I don't speak Japanese. If either one of these girls came on here asking me to remove the picture I would not hesitate. But I will not remove it simply because some viewers are perverted, that lies with them not me.

But I do appreciate your apology x3 It's nice to know you didn't mean anything by it.
And I understand where you're coming from entirely.
The person we were arguing with was coming on with a decent point, though. I just feel like there's red areas to that. Photojournalism is spontaneous to a degree, I'm sure, but there's got to be boundaries. There's got to be some type of rules.
I wish they would have stuck around to at least discuss that much with me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SetsunaNoroi In reply to PepoFaec [2011-07-20 15:11:34 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Glad to hear it didn't upset you too bad. Thanks for accepting the apology.

I think she had a good point too, but how she felt she needed to convey that point is what blows it a bit out of the water. Not many are willing to listen to that kind of person when they rave on like that. Still, I suppose it's her own bussiness to what behavoir she feels is appropriate. Personally though, I was sensing a bit of an ego on her behalf.

Photojournalism is a very good artform I think. The spontanousness of life can be beautiful to capture, but it's sadly turning into paparazzi. I saw a case argued a few years ago about college girls who had been photograghed without their knowledge in the nude and then used by another student in a sketching class. It was horrifying, yet the girl who took these pictures refused to admit she had done anything wrong because it was "artistic". While I don't think this is anywhere near that level, it's certainly close enough to make me uncomfortable with the content.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PepoFaec In reply to SetsunaNoroi [2011-07-20 15:41:49 +0000 UTC]

I sensed the ego bit, too. She had a hugely offensive way of replying even though a lot of it seemed "calm-ish". It was almost as if there was only one right answer and her's was God.

And good lord, that is horrifying D: If I were her teacher, I would have failed them for the very idea of it-- 'specially if there was evidence. At least- I'd make them redo the project.

I personally think that the worst these two girls could say about this image is that they didn't appreciate it being taken. They might even be embarrassed. Best case scenario: They'd laugh and ask for a copy. If I were in this person's situation and permission hadn't been given, I'd at least try to catch them on the train again before posting it anywhere. Show them the picture, explain my intentions with it.
The situation very well may be that the person was touring another city or even visiting the country and never saw them again. Either way, the very idea of either side is open to discussion. The girl we were talking to didn't seem to grasp that.

And -- you know, I've talked like this to a few people the past few days and they always got overly defensive with me. Even mocked my side of the argument, gave back handed comments and just started a bunch of crap in general that seemed to stir me up in a way that no one has before. I don't understand why people can't just talk about a subject like you and I are doing. We're obviously not hurting anyone. We're not calling names, being vulgar or attacking anyone. Why is everyone on such the offensive these days? So thank you for not going crazy on me lol I really appreciate that.
