I've heard the term Mary-Sue long before the interwebs, my grandmother heard the term when she was young. It's basically referring to the "perfect girl". That unrealistic perfect girl next door hat everyone wants to be or be with, etc etc. My granny used to call me "beeba-sue" in the same snotty context. Which was a horrible bastardization of my real name. Was ment hurtful. *shrugs*

Not really. There are 2 confirmed types of their species, so unless a whole new area is said that has mostly alicorns, then it will be normal to have an alicorn oc.

Honestly, I think there could be more alicorns if, say, a pony had a unicorn parent AND a pegasus parent. Get the wings from one parent and a horn from the other. However, I feel that situation is rare since it is rare for unicorns and pegasi to intermarry, hence the severe lack of alicorns other than the royal duo.

I think the difference is that lot's of ponies are one of the three races but only two of them are alicorns. An alicorn is something much more special and powerful than even a pegasus or unicorn.
Haven't read any fics with an OC alicorn running around as a main character before so I can't really speak from experience on that end.
