Hypothesis:I really have just one original character, and my gallery is a result of failed attempts to reproduce it over the years.
But in all honesty, this is something that's been bugging me recently. I have difficulty drawing my own characters consistently! I don't know if this is the reason I keep making one shot characters or just a result of the practice.

Maybe if I practice drawing crappy manga I will get better at this.

lol i do this too but in a different way. When I draw my characters in 3/4 view they look too realistic and not like my stylized versions at all

I wish I had that problem. ._. I make too many characters...although it's not 100% the same since I write. aheh.
Making a new character isn't always easy. Mine are usually spur of the moment jokes with friends who say you should totally build on that! >> Maybe you just need someone to bounce ideas off of until you find something that clicks for you. ^^

Sleeping it off does help though, even if practice is the key.Β
