Description
It's been a looooong time since I made one of these. Why? Because for pretty much this entire console generation, games have been utter sh*t, and constantly pointing that out just became depressing.
Everything was being sold with a "season pass", so you knew off the bat that it was an incomplete product. Everything was leaning toward multiplayer, and not the kind where actual skill is rewarded, being as they were all pay-to-win. Ignoring the microtransaction, pay-to-win bullsh*ttery of its easily-dismissed online component: Red Dead 2 finally bucks that trend. It is an EXQUISITE game.
If you want an open world to explore, that (unlike GTAV) is actually full of interesting things to find and interact with: you need to play it. You will spend hours on the main game and sidequests that are marked for you, but there is a TON of hidden stuff scattered across the land, making this one of those rare AAA games that is genuinely worth the price tag.

I played this game straight through for about two weeks, every bit of my gaming time going to it. Fantastic and very fitting comic for it here.

Hoping for a PC release by Summer of nest year. Can't wait to try this. I'll admit that I've been spoiled by Skyrim and The Witcher III. Looks like RDR2 will hit the spot.

Wish I could be interested, but I've been burned by Rockstar games in the past...Β Every single game has that one mission in it where one of Rockstar's coders went "I created this thing and now the players have to do it to advance the plot!"
The standout moment that comes to mind the quickest was when they inserted Parappa the Rappa into GTA: San Andreas.Β For no God damn reason, you need to dance to impress a beach-side DJ so she lets her guard down and you can steal her van.Β The problem?Β The way you dance is by tapping in the right sequence of buttons in the exact right order at the exact right time and God help you if you're juuuuust too slow or juuuuuust too fast, because that's a miss and you can go fuck yourself, game!
I think it was Vice City that included flying RC plane bombs...Β I remember webcomics that flipped out about those.

Yeah, from what I've heard, Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest God of War, and the Spider-Man game were all fantastic, but for the most part, all of the other console games have had serious defects.Β

Well hopefully I will get the game come Christmas so that way I can watch all the things on it and not be spoiled on anything.Β But I have learned that there is micro-managing in both this base camp that seems to be important and the the always wanted and asked for survival aspects.Β Β Β Because who does not enjoy taking time off having fun to slog 4 hours trying to make sure you got enough food in your belly, water in your veins, sleep, and cleanliness.Β You know.Β Stuff that does not take you out of the video game at all and are always easy to do.
I have also learned that hunting is now more complicated than in Red Dead Redemption.Β Wanna get those pelts and meat in mint condition?Β Then you gotta get in close to slit throats and arrow the buggers.Β Which I am sure some of those animals will just let you do that because there is no way there are ones who have the means to slaughter you in a variety of fun ways.Β Oh hey a random cougar attack.
Now being as this is a prequel and the strange fact that we are NOT playing as the true mans, man John Marston.Β I don't want to hear anything about who is best character or about how this ties into the first game.Β But I am a little baffled as to WHY John never mentioned any of the other people in The Vanderlin Gang?Β He mostly talked about how Dutch went loopy and then about how things took a turn for the worst.Β Plus being that John only was given 3 of his former gang family to hunt down means that Edger Ross really was thorough in wiping out the "savages of the West".Β I better hope that these people I am meeting are just horrible because I don't think I can get through seeing them murdered in cold blood just because they choose not to conform to the American government.Β My heart won't be able to take it.

I dunno, I've heard RDR2 is too 'realistic' in some gameplay things, which made it ridiculously tiresome for a lot of players, like long animations to get on a horse or to skin animals. But hey, South Park's latest season kept praising that game, so it must be good. ^^'
As for this entire generation sucking, I've heard a LOT of good things from God of War 4 and the latest Spiderman game (which does have DLCs planned indeed, but the base game is already great as it is).
I myself am a PC player, and I still pray for the whole concept of platform exclusivity to die in the fires of Hell.

"Everything was being sold with a 'season pass'".Β Yeah, they used to be called Expansion Packs.Β You didn't have a problem with those, even though they are exactly the same thing, just sold in a separate box on a separate disk.Β Does that mean that Starcraft was sold incomplete?Β Just because it had an expansion pack?
π: 0 β©: 1
jollyjack In reply to Kethrian [2018-12-17 00:44:16 +0000 UTC]
Expansion packs of old are in no way the same as modern day, "season pass" style DLC.
A game would only get an expansion pack if it prooved popular. It gave players more of what they wanted, to tide them over until a true sequel appeared.
Contemporary DLC is PLANNED, that's why season passes are sold alongside the game on release, and why a lot of modern games feel like huge chunks are missing.
π: 0 β©: 1
Kethrian In reply to jollyjack [2018-12-17 07:24:24 +0000 UTC]
The reason for that is two-fold.
First, games are still sold for about the same price as 25-35 years ago.Β AAA companies use DLC expansions as a way of raising the price of a game to make up for the loss due to stagnating behind inflation, while giving the option to the buyer to purchase a smaller amount of the game if they don't have the funds for the full game.Β Most things nowadays cost somewhere around double what they did back then, but games still average $60.Β Even with a season pass, these big games often only cost $100, putting them a bit cheaper comparatively than the $60 games of the past.
Second, most AAA companies nowadays can be reasonably certain of a product selling well enough to warrant the DLC's production immediately, instead of waiting 6 months to a year to see if it sells enough.Β In the past, there was no such guarantee, and so putting your people to work on something which might not be viable because of a lack of sales could be disastrous for the company.
I have no problems with season passes for DLC expansions to games.Β They are not loot boxes, they are not "pay to win", they are not any of the dirty, underhanded stuff that companies came up with afterward.Β They are honest expansions to games that the devs started working on immediately after the main game that get rolled out often in the following 3-6 months.
