Technically all of Texas, parts of California, New Mexico, Florida and I think Utah as well belonged to Mexico before General Zachary Taylor purposely attacked Mexican soldiers on Mexican soil to antagonize them. When the soldiers defended themselves he wrote a letter to General George Washington that "American Soliders had been attacked and American Blood had been shed on American soil." You know straight up lied to get more soldiers in order to go forth and over take the Mexican soldiers and steal land from the Mexicans. On the other hand General Mariano Arista saw that they were out numbered and not wanting to see all of his men slaughtered he reluctantly gave in to the American soldiers and they lost land because of it.Β

It's really messed up that a lot of people don't know what actually happened and the only real way to find this out is if you get American text books and Mexican texts books both of which only give their side of the situtaion and you can actually see parallals that line up and then you get to know that yes the American's fought for the land they wanted while the Mexican's did the same thing and ended up losing. They were out numbered and despite wanting to keep going they had no choice but to give in and though they say they did it willingly they actually are rather upset about that loss.Β

The Adams-Γ“nis Treaty made official the transfer of Florida from Spain to the US in 1821, Florida was never part of Mexico.

uhhh dunno where you got that history from. The battle that Taylor engaged in was in Corpus Christi, which at the time was in the recently independent republic of Texas and were stationed there in a deal to transition the republic into annexation into the US and there were never any official reports as to who fired first anyways. And sending a letter to George Washington would have been quite impossible since he had been DEAD for almost 50 years at the time of the incident.

Additionally General Mariano Arista had not "given into American soldiers" He was driven out of Palo Alto and Resaca de Palma due to his forces being overwhelmed by the American army having a stronger position due to having superior artillery at the time that was more accurate then Mexican guns. After the battle at De Palma Arista was recalled to Mexico City and forcibly removed from command by political opponents at the time.

The situation only got worse as Santa Anna (who had been exiled at the time) struck a deal that if they got him back into Mexico he would peacefully end the war and sell California and New Mexico to the US for $2 million. The US aided him and as soon as he got to Mexico City he betrayed the US, joined the Mexican Army, betrayed the Mexican government, and reseized the presidency, and tore up the intended deal with the US in favor of continuing the war. Going into exile AGAIN and then becoming president AGAIN, only getting ousted after the people learned he had been woefully corrupt, and responsible for massive amounts of bloodshed in the name of securing an iron fisted rule over Mexico.

So the story is a lot larger then what any school history book will tell you. Really gotta dig your thumbs in there to find out what's really going on.

You know that most of that was in the American text books and suffice to say that the people who write the books do so from a point of viewe that can be skewed. While I'm certain that I missed details and what not the point I was hoping to make was that the territory originially belonged to another and was taken by the abuse of power. The comic is showing that as well. That the abuse of power shifts the dynamicy of what is happening.Β

Prof-Nekko In reply to CrystalBlackHeart [2019-02-16 05:22:19 +0000 UTC]

I still don't believe that "taken" is the proper term since The US DID give Mexico $15m (which at the time was a shit ton of money) for the territory (granted this payment was made by reducing the amount of debt Mexico owed to the US by that amount, but that's still technically payment). The deal may not have happened without the war, but a payment for the land was made, making it an exchange instead of theft of land.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CrystalBlackHeart In reply to Prof-Nekko [2019-02-16 20:15:08 +0000 UTC]

It was taken because that money wasn't accepted, Mexico never agreed to actually take the money in exchange for land. The U.S. forced them out of their land and then threw the money at them to pretend that it was something agreed on. Of course this is never properly discussed in most history classes and if you look into the U.S. does this frequently with other things they have done. Especially what they did to the Native American's.Β

If Brexit goes ahead, Scotland already plans to have a second independence vote, which (given that pretty much the entire country voted to remain with the EU) will no doubt go through this time. Wales has floated the possibility of doing the same. Even Ireland is thinking about reunification in the wake of Brexit.

If one or all of these take place: the United Kingdom (which is the union of England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland) will LITERALLY cease to be.
