Description It's finally finished. This was done as a request for a friend, although I changed it from being romantic. It took longer than I wanted (no thanks to Berseria), but I'm quite satisfied with how it all turned out.

As for the ship itself, I think it would be very interesting to see Lancaster happen. However, it's also just as good if they remain as they currently are in the show.

As mentioned, I don't consider myself a shipper...but I respect all ships.

Is it bad if I want this ship to be canon more than any other Ruby Rose ship?
Truthfully I don't prefer this one or Arkos over the other, though it's mainly because both have less toxic shippers than Yellow Jacket(Bumblebee) does, I mean by no means do I feel that it should in the same way I feel towards Black Sun, which is my favorite ship in the entire show, but I feel like it can work better than any of the others

I appreciate your honest opinion on the matter. No, it's not bad at all.

I agree that Lancaster shippers are generally less toxic from what I have observed, but I can't say that they are safe from the other ships' toxicity that involve Ruby (hint hint Whiterose). Arkos, although broken, gives me the same impression. It's the Pyrrha revivalists however that worry me...especially those that have genuinely threatened the writers if they do not bring her back.

Yeah, that's true, truthfully part of me wishes that Monty never made RWBY as it's evolved into quite a toxic fandom with some really good people mixed into it(like Hero Hei for example), but then the guy would not have been as famous as he should be(I for one never heard of the guy before his saddening death and only associated the phrase Keep Moving Forward with a good Disney movie Meet the Robinsons) and so I am very mixed on the show, it used to be one of the greatest works of animation I've seen in the past 5 years, and due to the toxic parts of the series(Miles and Kerry for ignoring constructive criticism until what the criticism was initially about was resolved in a forced manner, the Bumblebee Shippers for showing hatred towards Sun just because he's a possible love interest for Blake, and some of the cast for bashing the fans who want the show to get better), I found myself looking forward to it less and less, though I still watch it because there are some Male Reader Stories I've read that are good but have the canon as a base to write the stories in question. Plus I do still like the show overall despite the obvious problems, in fact there's a YouTuber that I've watched react to a few shows in the past(Kenichi, Death Note) and to keep him as positive about the show, I warned him not to venture too deep, to just watch the show and not interact with much of the fandom because of how toxic some of it can be.

I kinda wished that Lancaster was canon in Volume 6. At least if Ruby was enough to replace Pyrrha.

Well, everything is still up in the air and anything is possible. I do not see why Lancaster cannot become official at some point, and Jaune should eventually move on. The fact that he didn't just break down in front of Pyrrha's statue is proof he is ready to in some capacity.

Even if I'm not the biggest Lancaster fan (I'm still Arkos primarily, even post Vol. 3, and I see Jaune and Ruby as more brother and sister) I do really enjoy this nonetheless. Hopefully, we'll see something like it in the official release as well.

Though... if I had to be honest, I also hope we see more of Ren and Nora supporting Jaune as well... and the rest of Team RWBY... and maybe Winter...

Qrow... he can stay on the sidelines, but that's because I don't really trust him right now...

They really are better in a platonic relationship. They act as great leaders of their teams, and being together would compromise that dynamic.Β

Exactly! Besides, they haven't really had any strong romantic chemistry throughout the seasons. And considering Vol. 4 had a time skip of 6-8 months, I feel that the lack of interest shows the two are just not interested in each other--at least not right now.

Besides, regardless of whether Pyrrha eventually comes back (either permanently or as just a small role, like maybe as a ghost to give everyone closure), Jaune does get feelings for somebody, or something else, right now Ruby and Jaune, for better or worse, still seem to be in the mourning process. Regardless of how either feel about each other or about Pyrrha (since I don't buy that Jaune just magically has feelings for Pyrrha now), I think that romance is the last thing on their minds.

I think that Jaune always had an affection for Pyrrha, but the thing he mourns beyond the loss of a teammate is his own ignorance of her affection and feelings for him. He effectively mourns the loss of a woman who saw greatness in him when no one else did, and the future that the two could have had if he had not been so obtuse and blind to her obvious attraction to him.Β

PsionicsKnight In reply to RustedDrAugon319 [2018-02-24 23:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I can see that, and I do believe that no matter what, Jaune and Pyrrha had a close bond with one another.

I think another reason Jaune is upset is just the lack of understanding; he doesn't know why Pyrrha went to fight Cinder so unprepared, or at least why she chose to go alone instead of bringing help. That kind of stuff could eat away at him and, assuming that he can't figure out the reason without her return, he may never truly know ever.

No matter what way we as the audience look at it, Jaune's grief in the story is real. What truly matters is that he reacts to the pain as humanly as possible. He grows from the suffering, shouldering the guilt of a leader. He was responsible for his team, and in a way he let them down by not being able to stop the death of one of their own. He suffered greatly for it, which only served to reinforce the bonds he has with his surviving friends and teammates. That we can have such emotion elicited from us as the audience shows how well the story is written. It shows us how human WE really are. I love stories like that.Β

Great reads you two, thanks. I have to agree that the way they are handling Jaune trying to deal with the loss of Pyrrha is quite emotionally powerful. I do not want that to be ruined by throwing in a love interest at this time with the intent of quickly developing it.

With that said, I must say that I don't particularly ship anyone in the show; I just enjoy making art of ships. However, I caution that the seemingly lack of "romantic chemistry" between the two can sometimes not be a good indicator of things to come, regardless of future developments. Why is this? Well, let's just say I have seen certain cases where the majority or a good portion of the fandom are convinced that a particular ship doesn't have enough "hints" for it to become canon and BOOM, it's confirmed at the end. What may appear as no romantic chemistry to the audience may be different in the mind of the writer(s).

The scene with Ruby watching Jaune training in the middle of the night while watching Pyrrha's recording was very well made and touching. The music, the ambiance, the lightning, the small details such as the fireflies. That's the best scene in RWBY so far.

I was hoping that Ruby would approach Jaune that night, or at least do so another time. But there was no time for that after Qrow got poisoned. Maybe it will happen in volume 5 instead. Your pic is an example of how it could've gone. Β Both of them lost a friend. Jaune lost more though, as he lost a mentor, a teammate, and possibly a lover. Ruby on the other hand had to watch Pyrrha get executed, and her body disintegrate into cinders. They are both hurt, and both of them can comfort the other.

I like Lancaster, and I can see it happening eventually. They just must take it slowly. The commentary in volume 4 said that Ruby and Jaune were going to hug near the end, but the makers decided not to because they knew it would cause a lot of positive and negative comments about Lancaster.

So about the pic itself. It's great. It's sad, emotional. The text matches perfectly.Β But I have a complaint. I think the background doesn't match what's going on between Ruby and Jaune at all. The pic should be about them, how Jaune is missing Pyrrha, not the end of the world. I think it would have been more fitting if the background was the forest where Jaune trained at nighttime, with the moon and fireflies as illumination.

Joshuya-Raidon In reply to Snorri84 [2017-09-22 11:13:52 +0000 UTC]

I must agree. I feel that scene alone had the greatest impact on me for volume 4.

As for the background...you virtually guessed what it was originally going to be. My friend's request involved them kissing, and I was going to do that with a forest background like the one we saw Jaune training in at night in the show. So, it would have implied that after one of Jaune's training sessions, Ruby approached him and they made out. However, I started feeling awkward about it because I didn't feel like they had any romantic interest in each other in all of volume 4. It felt too soon and it's apparent nothing like that would have happened in the show between episodes.

Therefore, I felt toning it down from being a kiss to what we have here in my pic would fix things. However, I still felt awkward about it. Again, in all of volume 4, I had interpreted their relationship as being close friends at best. However, her hands being on his hand and cheek show a level of intimacy that I find difficult to imagine happening between close friends. It's easier for me to picture her hugging him instead to comfort him, as that to me conveys more of a sense of compassion than intimacy (although it seems even a hug wouldn't be taken lightly by some fans per the commentary eh?). If Ruby was romantically interested in Jaune, then I might have seen her hand placements as appropriate, but I didn't get that vibe from her at all in volume 4.

I decided that in order to keep them the way they are now, I would have this pic take place at some point in the future where Ruby has possibly developed feelings for Jaune. I had to scrap the forest background as a result because it appeared too reminiscent of Jaune's training session in volume 4. Instead, I opted to convey a scene of chaos and hopelessness where I imagined Jaune breaking down and wishing that Pyrrha was still here, to which Ruby decides to console him while (subconsciously) showing affection. Looking back on it now though, I agree that the background detracts from the moment they're sharing. I wish I had planned something better.

Regardless, thank you for your feedback and kind compliments.

If pyrrha is never coming back in future volumes thenΒ Lancaster needs to be an official ship in the series. I don't care what anyone says Ruby and Jaune work just fine together.

Poor Pyrrha... Well, they definitely would work together in my eyes, given the appropriate time. I wouldn't say it "needs" to happen though.Β  As it stands now, if Ruby were to end up with anyone then Jaune is probably the best candidate. However, that could change depending on how the WhiteRose reunion plays out and so forth. Bottom line is that ships like WhiteRose or even White Knight are still viable given the proper development in the (near) future. On the other hand, maybe they'll keep Ruby single/married to her scythe instead.

To be honest I don't see white knight being a thing because Weiss never cared for Jaune and in volume 2 Jaune let go of his crush on Weiss and since then he hasn't thought about winning her over. I see them as friends but nothing more. As for whiterose I don't care for this one.

Great observation! I think this is because I used the official concept art of Jaune as the only reference. In the concept art, when looking at him at profile, you'll notice it doesn't appear to cover the stomach all that much either even though the frontal view has it slightly more covered. After taking a second look, I feel his back if anything could use a bit more covering on my end. Perhaps for the sake of consistency I should have checked with screenshots of the show, but in most cases people won't care unless it's really obvious. Therefore, the concept art became my only reference to eyeball how long, wide, and high things are.

This reminds me of the concept art of Weiss where her ponytail appears to be more centered, which I followed in my art piece of her. That obviously is not the case in the show. However, at the time that I drew Weiss we only had the concept art to work with, so I couldn't have possibly known in that instance.
