Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

Oh, wow! This might be a stupid comment, but I never thought of doing that. I usually go over my stuff done in pencil with those really thin art markers... and it takes forever. And if you mess up, you're screwed.
This is AWESOME. So happy I read the tutorial... Thanks a MILLION!

this was very helpful in a lot of ways, except for the way I wanted to learn most, which was the pen tool. what version of photoshop are you working in? because when I use the pen tool in PS, it doesnt work the same way. for instance, my lines start with an anchor point in the middle, and when I push the ctrl key, all it does is move the entire line, anchor point and all. I cant figure out how to manipulate the curves like you do... and I have both mouse and tablet. THE PEN TOOL JUST CONFUSES ME SOO MUCH, and I realy really want to learn how to use it properly.

fantastic tutorial though. you covered a lot of ground in this one. I wish more tutorials were like this.

Hiyas! I use Photoshop version CS2, although I'm certain CS has the same pen tool... It's possible an earlier version might work differently...

Your tutorial was excellent and very detailed oriented. Not to complex but..yet...you put humor into your tutorial.

I've been doing the "tracing method" for my sketches but..since i only had photoshop for a months, i'm new at it. I like the type of method you display in your tutorial. I'll try that out for myself.

Now..if i could only get the coloring right. :sweatdrop:

Oh wow! Now I feel like going home and inking digitally. I like this tutorial alot better than one I just downloaded. It's easy and you don't make it seem like everything is easy right away. you actually tell us how to do things. Hehehe.

As you might have guessed I am a traditional artist and don't really do digital work but am interested.

I kno this sounds like a wierd question but no matter what i do the lines always turn out red...can u help me?

joulee In reply to nirvanalane [2006-03-21 06:57:48 +0000 UTC]

Hiyas! You mean when you use the pen tool and stroke the path? It's the color of the brush you're currently using... so if your brush color is black, your lines will be black.

well put toghether tutorial thanks. Yeah your right about tablets being hard to ink on. Personally Id rather ink in real life and risk fucking it all than use the wavy arse lines I get from trying to use a tablet. I have done some drawings by poly lassooing round every line and filling which makes a nice effect but takes an actual eternity.
