Description
Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.
A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!
Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.
As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and

Great Tutorial! I really like the part where you describe the pen tool. To many tutorials around assume you already know what your doing, but since I don't, this one really helps

wow, i really dont agree with how you use Flash for that... you just piled the lines up on top of each other and then tweaked them?
messy...
i like to put the lines into place as im going along, anythign that overlaps i leave till later... a lot of the time i convert to a movieClip and put those bits on another layer all together, then combine them on the same layer at the end.

Hey,
Wel first of all I wonna tell you that this is a great tutorial for me, as I have a lot of problem with the linart.
But now I have a bit of a problem and I hoped you could help me with that.
In method 2, you say you have to right-click on the lines, well if I do that, I cant select 'stroke subpath' So I'm wondering If I do it wrong or something. Maybe you can tell me how to do it?
many regards
Rajini

you probably have pen tool set to "shape" instead of just "pen." Look in the options and try selecting the icon with a pen through the path.

Very cute picture used! Though I'm not really sure about the capsul... Is it a pill? Hard to swallow I think! The tutorial is very helpful, as everyone else has also pointed out. The colors you use as the background and font work very well with the pic, too. Very nice overall!

yeah... it's a capsule... I'll post a bigger version of it shortly, but basically the girl has caught lightning bugs in a capsule, and the bugs are very very sad. ^^

Thanks to this I started playing around with my path tool.
I got a question, with the path tool producing smooth lines do you think it's neccesary to still have a Tablet?
I recently put an order for a Tablet, but with the path tool it almost seems like I don't need one.
Oh and I'm faving this!

joulee In reply to bunnymix [2006-03-21 05:19:35 +0000 UTC]
oh yes. I certainly recommend a tablet. Shading and just sketching is a lot easier. Remember--pressure sensitivity for coloring!

i use the line tool most of the time rather than meh tablet.
learned two things:
1) tablet works better with painter. (ooooh! So that would account for a lot of that dumb thing's problem! XD)
2) i learned another pen tool technique!

gaahh!
I though really interesting the tutorial, specially the pen tool at photoshop
But I couldn't make it!
I don't know why everytime I use pen tool, the points that I make get fill with color.
and when I right click on the path, the "stroke subpath" don't appear selectable!
Is there a configuration I need to change?

joulee In reply to tiggerfactory [2006-03-21 05:18:42 +0000 UTC]
Hi tigger! Hmm, so the problem might be that you have your pen tool set to "shape" instead of "pen." Look in the options menu and select the icon that looks like a path with a pen in the middle.
Let me know if you're still having problems!
