Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

Your explanation and accompanying visuals made this a very clear tutorial! I have seen some of these steps given by other artists, but your is the best job I've seen so far!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.

For the flash part, I'd suggest using the pen/pencil tool for rough sketches, then doing them again with the line function, so that you get rid of most of the points, which will allow for simple manipulization.
Then again, This is coming from someone who uses a man-in-a-clam for his internet counterpart...

using the line tool? does that draw curves? I haven't used that much...

princeshadow13 In reply to joulee [2006-03-21 11:47:12 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you can curve the line by hand, and then combine them by clicking on the corner and dragging it till the circle enlarges.

... do you use illustrator? it has a much nicer pen tool that in photoshop, if you ask me, and once you have it inked you can color it in photoshop. o_o

Yeah i'm really wobbly when it comes to handling tracing with the pen too you gotta have a damn steady hand to do it by tablet. so i use the the pen tool with it set to pen pressure, or i use Illustrator to ink cause it instantly gives you clean sharp straight lines.

joulee In reply to TigerNightHawk [2006-03-21 04:57:07 +0000 UTC]

i should try using illustrator... it sounds fantastic! O_O!

Hey, this is a very good tutorial, not only did you explain the "how-to" very well, but that you explained it for more than one program. I think it would have nice too if you had included a tutorial using Corel Painter IX, because that is the illustration program that I have, but no one seems to have it because there are no tutorials for it, or at least none that I have found. Overall, very very nice.

Oh, I know how hard it is to ink with just freehand! But, I think that not only shrinking the image, but bluring it a little afterwards would help make the lines look smoother. Thanks for making this tutorial.

I'm sure blurring it would help too.
