The Empty Knight is the soul of real knight which was claimed, stolen, won, whatever (depends which legend you believe) by Malfearance back in the day and is now shoved back into armor created to hold the soul so that it can play the role of bodyguard, cannon fodder, manservant or whatever else Malfearance may need. While the Empty Knight is completely self aware, he has no free will and must obey Malfearance without question...

Destroy the Empty Knight and Malfearance can raise him again once he can put his hand upon another suit of armor... Thus the handprint - it's the mark left by Malfearance's power.
