According to the following story ( news.deviantart.com/article/60… )that is how you get more popular. I am here to tell you all the evils of how to NOT have the pageviews or the allmighty popularity.

-ehem-

--Do Original Artwork--
Heaven forbid you make something that's not a fanart. Not drawing fanart will clearly result in millons of faves, and I mean... who would ever want such a thing? So... draw your own characters, create your own style, put time and effort into your work and you're golden! Such things will never result in any kind of attention, so you're good.

--Be Nice--
If you're nice to people, you'll get less attention. Since blocking and hiding any comments that offer advice on how to get better result in more love, you must always be nice and honest. Hiding comments and never asking for critiques makes you seem all mysterious and junk which is strangely attractive. Don't do it...

--Never Trace--
Thats the easiest way to get yourself up in the clouds of godly popular artists here on dA. Tracing Naruto screenshots will get you billions of faves in the first three seconds, so in that case stick to being original and creative even if you did draw fanart.

So what did we learn from all this?

To sum everything up, you have to be creative and original. Best thing you can do, is actually be a good artist and create wondeful pieces of art like nothing enyone ever seen before. With perfect anatomy, creative concepts and eyecatching colors. If you can do all that you will never EVER reach popularity... But I can tell you one thing... You will most definitely will be respected more. You'll actually get somewhere with your art.

I am very dissapointed with DeviantArt at the moment... I believe it should be changed to DeviantSpace... It's not about art anymore, it's about who gets more pageviews and who gets more faves on their traced 'artwork'.

Sure... if all you want is fake adoration, then go ahead and follow the simple rules listed in the link above. But if you are an artist and you take pride in your work... then keep doing what you are doing.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for understanding.

Well, sometimes, when it is something original, it can get attention.
But this, the topic of the artwork may have toΒ get something populare or known.
It is like a combination between popular topic and originality.
But is is only one factor that goesΒ in the popularityΒ Β .

A lot of fan-artists may be popular on deviantart, but they aren't going to get any serious acknowledgement in the real world.

Being popular on deviantart isn't going to pay your bills...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-06 03:36:05 +0000 UTC]

employers don't really take fan art seriously, no matter how good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-06 05:04:15 +0000 UTC]

Wouldn't they pay attention to the art QUALITY rather than the content?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-07 02:24:12 +0000 UTC]

yes, quality matters a lot, but it is completely ruined if the idea isn't original.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-07 03:59:44 +0000 UTC]

Originality isn't exactly rewarded these days anyway, sadly.

Look at the movie industry. They've been making sequels, remakes, and adaptations for YEARS.

Also, look at the game industry. MadWorld for the Wii console was somewhat original, compared to tried-and-true stuff like Mario or Sonic, but it FLOPPED. Viewtiful Joe back on the Gamecube was original, and was critically acclaimed, but was not as popular as Resident Evil 4. No further sequels have been made to this point.

And Final Fantasy XII, I'll admit, is even somewhat of a Star Wars clone in terms of story/characters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-07 18:45:47 +0000 UTC]

yea, that's true. however those industries cater to a specific population, the same way that fan artists cater to the fans of a particular show/game/book whatever.

and yea, the movie industry needs to make something new. everything is a remake now i think people are running out of ideas.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-08 01:58:46 +0000 UTC]

That's the problem; if you do try to give employers original characters, they'll probably be compared to other existing characters and dismiss them as "rip-offs".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-13 22:00:14 +0000 UTC]

which is why you generally don't add character art to a portfolio. they are usually more interested in technical skill, so they like life drawings. or they want to see your exploration of a concept.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-14 02:47:03 +0000 UTC]

What type of "concepts" are you referring to, though?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-14 03:12:44 +0000 UTC]

ideas and stuff. interpretation of expression and all that abstract thinking.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-14 03:30:13 +0000 UTC]

What kind of ideas and abstract thinking would employers want?

I deeply apologize if I sound ignorant, but now I just feel like I've been wasting my time and that it's too late to start all that stuff NOW. I'm a junior (and a half) in college now, and I haven't exactly been "eating, drinking, breathing, or sleeping on" drawing in and out like or has.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-15 00:31:46 +0000 UTC]

depends on what their work is. like an illustration firm or better yet, an advertising company. they will want a presentation (probably animated since everything is multimedia now) of how you can illustration the concept of communication. like, I'm sitting in a phone store right now, and there are designs of colorful, stylized clouds that come down to a point. not only does it communicate the lofty conversations you could have on one of their phones (they look like speech bubble clouds), but the style and color communicates the attitude (which is very modern, hip, and friendly).

I have trouble thinking that way since I'm a technical artist and so I would rather draw objects than abstracted ideas.

What's your major?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-15 01:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Media Arts and Science

Area of Specialization: Digital Storytelling

Courses include Sequential Art and Scriptwriting.

Programs used thus far:
Illustrator(Not so frequently)
Photoshop
Flash
Powerpoint
among others...

I've used Photoshop the most.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fine art major. I wanted to try double-majoring, but then it would be too stressful, so I chose this over Fine Arts.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-15 15:28:08 +0000 UTC]

yea, I wouldn't do fine arts either. It's fun, but most art jobs now are multimedia and digital. I'm going to be majoring in computer animation, and so technical drawings are pretty much all they care about XD

So what are you planning to do with your major? storyboarding, advertising, comic book writing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RocMegamanX In reply to Sharkliver [2011-02-15 18:28:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure specifically, though I might want to try to be a video game character designer or concept artist.

I'm still not like Alan Moore, so I don't know how well I would do with comic book writing.

I'm not an expert in attracting people to a certain product. One of the things I DO know is that "sex sells".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharkliver In reply to RocMegamanX [2011-02-17 02:21:29 +0000 UTC]

sex always sells XD

I'm tempted to do concept art also. That takes a lot of technical and abstract skills... that or computer animation. I think I could do both just officially be an animator.

Comics would be difficult. I don't have the patience for it XD I think the hardest part of comics is drawing the boxes I don't know how to arrange them to make them interesting...

Video game industry is so hard to get into. But awesome.

I agree completely, most of my fanart, gets more favs more than my original work, and even then my fanwork is "too different from the original work" that it should be seen original.Supposedly.
I've been a deviant for like 2 or 3 weeks??and sometimes I feel it's better to go back to pixiv ((Ive gotten notes on "go back to pixiv too", but I will stay.
I like the easy way of this site.
Let's try our best!~

Totally hear ya. I like doing fanart of movies and games I like, but I try to make it compositionally interesting and add my own style to it or else work hard to make it look like the screenshot by eyeballing it. It's fun to get views and favs, but I'd rather actually earn them for something original I did.

Oh, btw, the second sentence in your Fanart section says "Not drawing fanart will result in..." I think you want to take the 'Not' out.
