According to the following story ( news.deviantart.com/article/60… )that is how you get more popular. I am here to tell you all the evils of how to NOT have the pageviews or the allmighty popularity.
-ehem-
--Do Original Artwork--
Heaven forbid you make something that's not a fanart. Not drawing fanart will clearly result in millons of faves, and I mean... who would ever want such a thing? So... draw your own characters, create your own style, put time and effort into your work and you're golden! Such things will never result in any kind of attention, so you're good.
--Be Nice--
If you're nice to people, you'll get less attention. Since blocking and hiding any comments that offer advice on how to get better result in more love, you must always be nice and honest. Hiding comments and never asking for critiques makes you seem all mysterious and junk which is strangely attractive. Don't do it...
--Never Trace--
Thats the easiest way to get yourself up in the clouds of godly popular artists here on dA. Tracing Naruto screenshots will get you billions of faves in the first three seconds, so in that case stick to being original and creative even if you did draw fanart.
So what did we learn from all this?
To sum everything up, you have to be creative and original. Best thing you can do, is actually be a good artist and create wondeful pieces of art like nothing enyone ever seen before. With perfect anatomy, creative concepts and eyecatching colors. If you can do all that you will never EVER reach popularity... But I can tell you one thing... You will most definitely will be respected more. You'll actually get somewhere with your art.
I am very dissapointed with DeviantArt at the moment... I believe it should be changed to DeviantSpace... It's not about art anymore, it's about who gets more pageviews and who gets more faves on their traced 'artwork'.
Sure... if all you want is fake adoration, then go ahead and follow the simple rules listed in the link above. But if you are an artist and you take pride in your work... then keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for understanding.

Not all amazing artists here on dA have millions of pageviews and yet, as you well said, they trully know their stuff, people like :levineHang: or ~hgjart . And for such artist all my respect.
As for the other part of the coin... well, I guess we can see now that, in the end, they finally get what they deserve. If not here on dA - as was fortunately the case with our "dear" Vampirella - then for sure in real life, which won't allow them to always act upon such misconceptions.

Pff. I read that and thought "WTH wrote this...? OH Vampirella. Ew"
oAo efff I don really want my pageviews to go up. I've noticed that (as if magically) around 20k views, people start getting things stolen.
Now I realize it can happen any time before that, I'm just saying people start noticing.
And not that my art is worth stealing. :/ I'm more worried about my characters. I put a LOT of work into them and they are very very dear to me. I'd hate to have them stolen. ;n;

I really like Deviant art, and I don't often look at fanart, I usually look for art that relates to how I feel on that particular day. I enjoy looking at the funny deviations, the serious, the sad and so on and so forth.
I will admit, seeing my pageviews increase makes me a little happy but what bugs me more than anything is getting comments like "cute" or "kawaii" like seriously? Is that all that you can come up with for a comment? At very least point out something you like and didn't like!
But it does feel good to know people are looking at your art. I don't care much for fan art cause (even though I do have some) I prefer to draw how I feel and get my creative juices flowing by periodically doing a meme or challenge.

Agreed. deviantART should be a place where people come to get their work looked at and commented on so that they can improve. If you're not developing as an artist, the pageviews and favourites mean nothing anyway. (:

Being popular doesn't make you better. I've seen loads of "popular" artists and their art isn't that great. Yea I draw some fanart, but it's because I want to, not to get more pageviews. Even then I definitely have more fun drawing my own characters. There's so much more to do with them.
Drawing fanart does not make you a better artist. On top of that I've seen amazing artists with amazing work with little to no pageviews and they had some really nice stuff too. It's so hard to find good art on DA these days. You have to weed through the rest of the stuff.

Sadly t'is how it is.
Pageviews mean squat, and it is silly to have ever worried about them in the past.
I keep my dAmn integrity, Original characters Rock, and fanHeart has a lot more meaning than traces.
I will draw what I dAmn well please, and I don't give a crap if people don't fav or comment. It's a deviation that I enjoyed. I am here to have fun, not to get popular, and that's why I joined in the first place (the fun part that is.)

*sigh* The fanart part is so true. I mean, I put up an APH fanart and now it's the most viewed and faved of my whole gallery. NO ONE HAS TAKEN A SINGLE GLANCE AT MY ORIGINALS. SERIOUSLY. And I think that is pretty much the case of anyone who does both fanart and originals.
WHY???

Burninghart In reply to marmoki [2009-03-27 00:09:48 +0000 UTC]
I hear ya. It's annoying, isn't it?
I once saw a deviation on the front page for being popular... I don't know who posted it (why the hell WOULD I), but it drew my eye with absolutely beautiful coloring. Then I took a closer look when I fullview'd it, and it was a PIECE OF CRAP. There were ungodly numbers of anatomical mistakes; the character had two left hands, the mouth was horridly crooked, the eyes were off-center, the head didn't attach correctly to the body, and the angles that the legs were at was just... *shudders* unnatural... And this deviation had thousands of views, a near-thousand comments, and hundreds of favorites.
Needless to say, I was pissed. I mean, I dunno if it was an OC or a fanart or what, but here I am, working until my heart and fingers bleed, doing everything I can to make my characters anatomically-correct yet beautiful as possible, and they don't even get a first glance, while this atrocity had been insanely popular. It's sickening.
That's why, while I do love a good fanart, I also tend to look for the OC's of whoever I'm faving or watching, because many, many times, the OCs are actually more "real" or better drawn. I mean, I'd want somebody to do the same for me, y'know?

i hate all the anime thats up in the "Popular" list on teh front page! and the fact that theres no literature thats ever on teh front page! writing is an artform as well! i dont care much for pageviews, but its nice to see that i am getting noticed, it just buggs me alot when really talented artists can be on for like, 3 years and still not even have reached 1000 views, and dont get the attention they deserve.
you actually saw a crappy picture like that on the front page? i guess it all comes down to the fact that people with more watchers than skills will get more faves, comments, and views on fan art of a show or manga that most of their watchers like. it disgusts me.
yeah...im a little random...

Burninghart In reply to Thorn-Zenithar [2009-07-20 23:35:01 +0000 UTC]
Nah, I agree with you on most of your points here. The only thing I don't agree with is hating all anime on the front "popular" list. Ya gotta admit, there are some really deserving pieces that were drawn/made in anime style, and manga pages take loads of skill and effort to draw.
Of the anime stuff, I just hate when somebody draws total crap and gets popular off of it. It's one thing to put loads of effort into getting it right and still getting it wrong (though if they got it too wrong, it definitely shouldn't be on the front page), but these people often don't put effort into getting it right, they just put effort into getting it done no matter how crappy it looks. People like that oughta be shot. In the foot. With a tranquilizer gun. And dragged off to art rehab.
I'm pretty lucky I guess; considering that I mainly draw Original Characters I've got a lot of pageviews compared to other OC artists... Guess I should count my blessings.

What can I say? I tend to hide my comments because I think my page looks cleaner... I'm not trying to be mysterious or whatsoever.
On the other side, I might hide some comments on deviations but they're not bad critiques, they're just personal comments that have nothing to do with the actual submission.

This is so wonderfully sarcastic and I definitely get what you're saying.
I think DA is becoming like MySpace because people are always comparing themselves to others.
I have a friend who draws OCs and she gets tons of comments and favs, but all she does is complain about fanart and fictional characters from series she hates.
Really, can't people be happy with the comments and favs they get?
I've be on DA for 2 years and the only thing that really bothers me is the whole war against OCs and fanart. It's all just a bunch of people being jealous of each other.
DA is for all kinds of artists, and people should be able to draw what they like without being accused of trying to be ' popular' or something like that.
... I've yet to see any traced artwork that is popular

I'm going to have to agree on this one. I've been in that age of only doing things for pageviews but after awhile, I realized I wasn't improving at all at what I love doing which is writing. Literature isn't so big on dA, actually. :/
I took a break from dA and gathered my thoughts and realized that dA is a place for your passion, or what you suddenly feel driven to do.
There are times when my friends feel like they're just drawing; feeling like some sort of boring job. Being an artist isn't supposed to feel that way at all.
So now I write whatever I really feel like, fanfics or original works. I really don't care who reads or doesn't read anymore because I know its up there presenting itself to the world.
I believe artist should just keep drawing (not tracing), writing, taking pictures of their passion. Inspiration doesn't only lie on dA. You don't need comments or pageviews to inspire you or make you popular. You have the rest of the world outside dA to look forward to.
Well, that's my ephipany.
