According to the following story ( news.deviantart.com/article/60… )that is how you get more popular. I am here to tell you all the evils of how to NOT have the pageviews or the allmighty popularity.

-ehem-

--Do Original Artwork--
Heaven forbid you make something that's not a fanart. Not drawing fanart will clearly result in millons of faves, and I mean... who would ever want such a thing? So... draw your own characters, create your own style, put time and effort into your work and you're golden! Such things will never result in any kind of attention, so you're good.

--Be Nice--
If you're nice to people, you'll get less attention. Since blocking and hiding any comments that offer advice on how to get better result in more love, you must always be nice and honest. Hiding comments and never asking for critiques makes you seem all mysterious and junk which is strangely attractive. Don't do it...

--Never Trace--
Thats the easiest way to get yourself up in the clouds of godly popular artists here on dA. Tracing Naruto screenshots will get you billions of faves in the first three seconds, so in that case stick to being original and creative even if you did draw fanart.

So what did we learn from all this?

To sum everything up, you have to be creative and original. Best thing you can do, is actually be a good artist and create wondeful pieces of art like nothing enyone ever seen before. With perfect anatomy, creative concepts and eyecatching colors. If you can do all that you will never EVER reach popularity... But I can tell you one thing... You will most definitely will be respected more. You'll actually get somewhere with your art.

I am very dissapointed with DeviantArt at the moment... I believe it should be changed to DeviantSpace... It's not about art anymore, it's about who gets more pageviews and who gets more faves on their traced 'artwork'.

Sure... if all you want is fake adoration, then go ahead and follow the simple rules listed in the link above. But if you are an artist and you take pride in your work... then keep doing what you are doing.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for understanding.

she will definately found out. Since your page's comment box will have a big "you're not authorized to post here" :<
dA isn't very discreet when it comes to blocking.

Damn I was just wondering how to get less popularity XD
I draw mostly fanart but I try to create my own stuff, even if it sucks so I think I'm safe right? lol
But What you say is true, there's far too much tracers around here and the worst is that most poeple can't even see it! A few years ago DA was a place for constructive art and new things and that's what gave me the desire to submit my art but nowadays, sadly it's more and more just a place to get popularity.

I do agree with all of this.

Truth be told, it's better to have respect for yourself, and for others, than to have a trillion pageviews. It also feels so much more gratifying to work and meet so many others on dA through art trades/commish/collab/commenting/clubs and such.

In ways, there are the right ways to get pageviews, and wrong ways to get them. I'm perfectly happy with my 2.7k pageviews count, and with all of the friendly deviants that I remain active with.

It is sad, though, how at some points, dA can diminish down to a MSish level--But I've accepted that there's gonna be some drama in life, and with time, it'll pass. :lionplz:

yes i too feel that da is losing some of what made it special in the first place but perhaps that is price of becoming a popular website. there is still a lot of good art out there you just have to dig deeper to find it now.

true. i agree with what you are getting at. it shouldnt matter on any of these sites how many friends, pageviews, comments etc you have; ppl are here to show off and that annoys me . it has become such a trend to attack other ppl and their work (if its just to get pageviews then i dont know because it wouldnt even enter my mind to hurt someone so you can raise a stupid number ) you cant tell others what to do or how to do it! you cant define art! its not right!(this is not an attack on you btw) but i must say there isnt anything wrong with fanart, art is about free expression, if that means drawing fanart that is up to you. i was so was terrible when i first signed up here i was scared to even put up aything! but by drawing whatever popped into my head(things i love hated or just found adorable ^^) i have improved and learned and am still doing so.

thank you for the article but you realise it is just human nature to compete (some more then others) continue with your own way and realise you will not likely change these ppl.

I've suggested on numerous occasions that the page view count should not be visible by default. Fact is, when you're on dA long enough, the first thing you look at when you visit a deviant's page isn't their featured deviation, recent deviations or journal, it's the page view count. It creates an instant response; a large number makes you think "this person must have a lot of great stuff"while a small number equates the opposite response. Sure, pageviews do not correlate to an artist's skill (or even popularity), and only serve to show how many hits their page has.

So the only purpose for the number is to create an arbitrary sort of competition among deviants. You can't help it. That number stares you in the face whenever you log on, and whenever you visit someone else. You see someone who hasn't been on the site as long as you with double or triple your hits and you immediately start to think "what's wrong with my stuff?"

I'm not saying that's how everyone is. I used to be that way. I tried drawing chicks all the time to attract attention and favorites, but I wasn't enjoying what I was doing. It was only then that I realized that I shouldn't care about the number. Now I just draw and write what I want. If it gets me more hits, great. If not, oh well.

Things would be so much better if the pageview count was something you had to click to see, perhaps in the "Gallery Stats" area, instead of it being displayed so prominently on a deviant's page like it's an important thing. The playing field, as it were, would be much more even if folks weren't discouraged by the constant presence of that number.

Just my two cents. Nice article.

I have a strange sort of fortune. Continuously through my journey on this site AND during my sales at conventions, my blessed few fanarts consistently get less favorites and attention than the majority of my OCs.

it boggles my mind but I'm certainly not going to complain. I'd much rather be known for what comes straight from my mind than what comes leeched from someone elses existing popularity.

On a side note deviantart is what you make of it. If other people are expected to ignore the front page, pageviews, and favorites...it is our job to ignore the people who make pageviews and favorites everything...and dig deeper into what the site can be. After all I have made many lasting and strong relationships through this life, both internet and real life connections...people who have touched me and will forever remain with me in my heart.

So if you can only look at your irritation for people who are all about pageviews...you are missing out on what this site can be for you as much as they are missing out on what it could be for them.

Take a deep breath and forget about everyone else for a bit. ^^ I'm sure you'll realize if you reflect a little...that even now this site leads to lasting friendships <3

It CAN be a wonderful community...you just have to know where to look

~Senny

I don't like doing fanart; I have some from requests and this one little Naruto sketch I did is the most popular thing in my gallery... Makes me want to cry.
So does the linked story in your article. I'd rather keep my honor and dignity than be a pageview whore.

I have a bit of advice for you Kero. You forgot the most important one. Create a unique story for your characters making them even more vivid and unique. Then you'll actually lose page views. One of my friends swears that she's lost page views before, yet I love her art and I talk about her all the time in my journals.

That cracked me up. Got to love the sarcasm there, it's f'ing hilarious.

While I like what you have to say, I also don't really like the very anti-fanart tone to your article. Why does it either have to be that someone encourages or discourages fanart? I think a lot of people seem to forget that it doesn't matter whether you make fanart or your own original work, what matters is that you do it your own way, using your own personal style and your interpretation of whatever you're drawing or painting, or even writing about, and not like many people; just copy or trace. People are so hung up on whether they should make fanart or not, but I say IT DOES NOT MATTER. As long as the artist enjoys making said art and does it because he or she wants to, I don't see what the problem is? Whatever makes one happy is completely individual, and who are others to judge them?

I would also advice you to keep a less personal tone when making an article like this, and double-check for spelling errors before you post, that way, it looks more professional. Just trying to help, not sound like a smart-ass.

I never really understood the point of pageviews. I mean, think about it. The people could be on your user page and never look at any of your art and it would still count as a pageviews.
I myself draw plenty of fan art. But the only real reason I draw fan art is because it's fun. It's what I want to draw and besides, the original purpose of dA was to be able to show your art to the world and put up whatever you'd like (as long as it doesn't break the rules of course.)
But I'm not saying that I'm not original. People have said my style is a really unique one.
I also have plenty of friends with ORIGINAL ideas, be it for fanfictions (that are actually good and don't have every single guy character falling for the mary-sue OC) or for ORIGINAL ORIGNAL stories that don't get the attention they deserve.
It's just sad how dA is a drama and popularity contest now. It's like, people just look at your pageview count to determine if you're a good artist when the pageviews really don't count at all.

But overall, thank you for making this article. I WAS getting really discouraged since I thought I was improving. Apparently, I'm getting worse, according to the views and amount of comments and favs. Maybe it's just the way I draw and the fact that it's considered "unique" based on my friend's opinions. XD But that's not the point and this article made me change my mind about that.

No. It's not about who gets more PVs and favs, but there's certainly far too many people like that on here, and you're right, it makes one wonder where this site is going.

I loathe her article. People like her give Fan Art a really bad name and because of her, the term 'Fan Art' has become almost like a curseword. "LOL you draw Fan Art, you're not a real artist! Fan Art is not art!" As much as it hurts to hear that, after reading her article, I can actually understand why some people think that way.

Good article. Too bad it's not going to wipe away the filth this person has smeared DA and real artists with, who just happen to enjoy drawing their favorite characters for their own pleasure, without giving a rat's behind about the attention.

indeed, it's important to be "original" (insofar as anything may be called original, given that concepts and themes are continually reproduced and re-used), to develop your own style, to be nice to people, to seek out constructive critique--but saying that these things will doom one to unpopularity is not quite true. a lot of popular artists around here are very talented, are highly creative and skilled at their art.

being popular is a pain is the ass.......you get jumped by all sorts of insane people asking for stupid things, invading you privacy, wanting free art, free requests, tutorial and eventually might as well send them a finger while we're at it. Lets face it....there are 2 types of people here on DA : the artists and the artist-wannabes that are actually people who got tired of myspace and hi5 and are looking for the next level of popularity here because clearly a bad quality picture of their face or butt on myspace or hi5 doesn't do the trick anymore.
