Description EDIT: This is still getting s but it would be nice to know of anyone actually using this! - gimmie a link if you make an animation using this as reference will ya? I'm interested to see ...also, it'd be great if you linked back to this tutorial so that other people can benefit from it too! ^-^
-----------------------------------
my good friend Cerzz has started to dabble in the wonderful and pain-staking world of animation! So far she's been lookin' mostly at dogs, so I quickly knocked up some thumbnails and threw together this tutorial to try and explain a few things. It only took an hour to put together, so it's not meant to be any conclusive lesson in making the perfect run cycle, more that it's simply intended to illustrate a few things which aren't easy to explain in words. I figured I'd post it up here in case anyone else finds it useful!

I suggest using this only as a guide, as you can see the animation itself is basic and by no means flawless!! the animation should loop automatically (if not, right click, loop) and if it's too small to read any of the text, right click, zoom in.
my tutors would screw if they knew I was workin' on this instead of my school work lol! ... me go bed now

Hope it helps Cerrz

Used your tutorial, it really was helpful. I'm trying for an animation major so I do want to get better at animating animals and people.

For now this is only a WIP but I should have it fleshed out and done eventually.

it's not so hard if you can find good video footage to use as reference... or you might like to look up the work of Edward Muybridge ( think that's how it's spelt!) ... he took a load of photographs of animals and people in motion back in the ... I dunno... late 1800's I guess... they're grainy and black and white but they're still useful reference for animators today

KeilidhBee In reply to ??? [2009-07-22 14:59:37 +0000 UTC]

Er, one thing - it sould be the opposite leg that lands first. Like if the right foreleg lands, then the left hindleg should follow. ^^' But good guide.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to KeilidhBee [2009-07-22 16:18:01 +0000 UTC]

umm.. forgive me if I misunderstand the point you're making here, but is that not what I've done? On my example the right fore-leg lands first, the hind leg to land next is the left one.
If however you're pointing out that the opposite hind-leg should land immediately after the first foreleg, (as opposed to on this example, which has both fore-legs landing first) then you might like to research more running strides; take this photograph reference of a running greyhound for example; [link] ...I think you'll find this is a similar stride to what I've drawn.

You have however drawn my attention to an error in the writing on the tutorial, I've written "front" leg when it should say "back" leg (d'oh!) ... thanks for that. - I really should update this anyway... it's always had an annoying kick which I notice repeated in the animation of anyone who uses it! -_-

KeilidhBee In reply to KatCardy [2009-07-22 16:30:00 +0000 UTC]

...My bad. xD; I was looking at the image wrong. It looked to me like the left leg was landing first in both the forelegs and hindlegs, but I just checked it again there, and you're right. xD I'm sorry.

Because the right legs are shaded, theyd din't stand outt o me as well, so I geuss it was a trick-of-the-eye thing, because I did check it a few times before commenting. xD

Really sorry about that.

Hey, no worries! I'm just glad I hadn't made such a basic mistake... looks like that first class hons in traditional 2D animation wasn't just for show after all lol - seriously though, I'm grateful that you commented, since you made me look closer and spot that error in the text.. I now have the file open and am updating the tutorial a little thanks to you so I'm happy that you left that feedback.
Thanks!
