Description "The moon sets," Kaa said. "Is there yet light enough to see?"
From the walls came a moan like the wind in the tree-topsβ€” "We see, O Kaa."
"Good. Begins now the danceβ€”the Dance of the Hunger of Kaa. Sit still and watch."

Kaa and the Bandar-log (c) Rudyard Kipling

I want to apologize first off before you read this.
Which I am sure you are wondering what I am even talking about..

Well at my school we are doing Jungal Book as a play.
And I was cast as Kaa, well in our theatre journals we had to find a picture of our character.

And I used your photo, so many of my friends really love it. And of course I give you 100% credit.

I really love this, it's greatly captured. I totally feel this was about Kaa. I love it.

Since Kaa was my favorate character in the Disney film, this was the only part of the book I actually read (lol). But when I DID read it, I was like "HOLY CRAP!!!" It's so unsettling!

You've really captured the true spirit of Kipling's creation; beautiful, noble, mystical, and frightening!

even as a kid when i read this part in the book it freaked me out. Kaa was so intelligent and cunning. Disney did ruin him, but they were making a children's movie and it wouldn't have been good to scare the bajeezus out of the kids. I dont own the book anymore, sadly, because we moved so much it just disappeared.

I don't know, Disnay does love to scare kids. Kaa could have been a great villain. I actually really loved the Jungle Book movie as a kid, but now I can see there's a lot they missed out on and they really could have fleshed out the plot more. I saw a behind the scenes thing and apparently some people making it wanted to add all these plot elements, but Walt Disney insisted that he wanted it to be a simple fun family film.

A wonderful illustration for the scene. Highly effective in tone, composition and rendering. And it has the same spooky dark feel of the scene in the story without being...violent and gory.

Spectic In reply to CrookedMick [2012-08-29 14:14:36 +0000 UTC]

He was kind of goofy and had some slapstick humour, but he did have a certain eeriness to him. Hypnotising eyes, seemingly infinite length that twirls around everywhere and makes odd shapes and the indian snake charmer music that often accompanied him helped. Just watch the song "Trust in me" on Youtube.

I somehow thought I had already commented on this...>.< Anyway, YESSSS. Kaa is the awesomest, especially in The Second Jungle book, I love when he and Mowgli take on the Red Dogs... um. Kipling geek? Me? No way, I mean, it's not like I've memorized all his poems from the Jungle Book as well as being able to quote whole passages from memory *Shifty look* So it's GREAT to see some book love! ^____^

Oh, and I forgot! He's a Rock Python, yes? The pattern matches, and I'd always thought (no idea how I got the idea) that Kaa was an African/Indian rock. Bigger and nastier than a Burm, oh yeah ^_^
