Description
This was an actual exchange I had with some guy at Anime Boston. He spent about 20 minutes looking through my art just to drop that nugget of wisdom on me...at a CARTOON CONVENTION.Though seriously, I swear I'm usually more tactful, polite, and receptive to criticism. This dude just pressed the right "Make Kevin behave like a total ass" buttons. X_x

People either like cartoons or they don't, sadly. I get that a lot too--especially from my professors at school in the Art Department. A few of them really support me but more just bash me and say that my style is juvenile and crap...but it makes me happy so they can go screw themselves

Anyone who tells you that your style is really cartoony could do with a friend to help pull their heads out of their asses. Western Cartooning is tops, broski.

Nah, I think that was the appropriate response. lol I don't understand the point of criticizing someone's artSTYLE. That is just a matter of preference from artist to artist. And your art style works very well with your humor.

Wait, so this exchange actually happened? In those exact words?
...Did you ever know that you're my heeerooooo?...
(seriously though, how dumb can someone be to use "cartoony" as an insult at a cartoon convention?)

Plus, if you said it with a smile on your face, he may well wonder if he heard you correctly for the rest of his life! Bonus!

I did very well for only having 2 feet of space, so the plan is a full table next year. So yes, I'll be going. ^_^

Actually that'd be the right way to handle it because of how the man handed out the criticism. I say if a person can not hand out criticism that is fair and has some sort of suggestion to go along with it... screw 'em! Constructive criticism is always better than plain criticism. You should retitle the piece "How to take pointless criticism"

I LOVE this... I have had that reaction to people (in my head) at conventions and will now not stop myself from saying it.
Really... people can be so stupid.
This is also the reason why I'm moving away from the whole anime scene... most of the audience is just too immature to even ATTEMPT to expand into other artistic representation. Idiots.

Wow... that's exactly like my art teachers from high school through college. cause cartoons aren't an art style at all...
I hope the last panel of the comic really did happen.

Stuff like this is why I wannna get away from the pure anime style of drawing I've unfortunetely developed over the years and try to come up with something that mixes the best of eastern and western art.

Ohh, how I wish I could have seen that XD Props to you for standing up for your work!
Cartoons and comics are a form of MEDIA! I wish everybody could understand that, instead of whining when a comicker's style doesn't look like their preconceived notion of a comic Scott McCloud's book "Understanding Comics" is an awesome resource for exploring this
If you have the time, I urge you to check it out!

Your style > anime style.
:C
what bugs me is that when I was browsing
dA, and I found this piece that was in
manga/anime style. It was just a black &
white piece, looked like it didn't take
any time, and not to mention it was also
just a portrait...and it was in the most
popular section for the whole day. @_@;
I went to their gallery, and it was just
the same thing. The most redundant gallery
I've ever seen! D8 All it was was just
some manga portraits and this person
was being praised for how 'amazing' they
were. ;_;
I don't get this place sometimes. I
feel like the most amazing artists here
are overlooked. :C

[link] <--this is the most repetative gallery I've ever seen. Oh well, I don't have to like it if I don't want too. And if other people like it, fine
I guess. I just think this gallery is boring, lol.

wow a 3 hitter: copies/traces, fan art AND moe...
well not like I can relate to japan's current taste in anime but thats all they have out now bunch of toho derivatives (or other moe crap) and I serious can't stand it.
and nope, you're right that galley is in fact boring and gives the rest of us that like anime work (and other influences) a bad rep.
