Description A pack of Andrewsarchii squaring off against what is presumably a therapsid (of the Anteosaurus variety). Is the poor sap in the left hand corner the owner of the Andrewsarchus, or merely his prey? Or, is the inverse true, and the therapsid has come to protect his owner? In any event, reconstruction of animals past is largely a guessing game. I have no idea what either therapsid nor Andrewsarchus should look like, and I may be way off here in both my renditions. Did they have fur? No fur? What kind of eyes did they have? What color was their skin/fur? Is their physical structuring anywhere near what I made them out to be? It is somewhat disconcerting to know that only one example of Andrewsarchus, a skull minus the jaw and postcranial fragments, has ever been found. But just remember that kids when you see those full-color National Geographic and Discovery Channel reconstructions .......

Maybe they're competing for for the same meal?
They wouldn't have the brain capacity to understand what it means to be a pet.

well to be fair, opossums and many types of squamata reptiles like tegus can be affectionate pets and they are as simple if not simpler than these fellows.

They extrapolate the body-type by comparing it to similar relatives... by the size of its skull in comparison the andrewsarchus was the largest mammalian land predator to ever exist. Think of a killer whale dressed like a hyena with hippo feet.

"Think of a killer whale dressed like a hyena with hippo feet."

That might make an even better 30 seconds of film than the Patterson Footage. 0_0

I have no idea why I never noticed this picture before...
Due to the extreme similarities between Andrewsarchus, and its cousin Mesonyx, it's strongly believed that Andrewsarchus had hoof-like toenails, rather than claws.

That's not quite sanitary, having your jaw on the floor.....unless it's a really clean tile, or some sort of comfortable carpeting.......or if there's food down there..... thanks again for the commentary!

Fantastic colored pencil work. I especially like the lighting on the.... big green beastie, and the downed caveman! Can I ask how large this art is and what surface you worked on?

Very cool

Khylov In reply to andrea-koupal [2004-01-16 17:49:08 +0000 UTC]

I believe the size of the pic was...wait, let me look....11x14 Strathmore paper (more than likely recycled paper). I usually leave about a 1/2 inch to an inch border around the drawing, so as to leave myself some room for framing it later if necessary; so this reduces the actual size of the pic to about 10x13 roughly (Making a border around the pic also allows for a comfort zone in case of damage to the paper, so as not to ruin or include creases or other damage onto the main drawing itself). As far as the texture of it is concerned: From what I remember, it wasn't extremely smooth, neither rough. Prismacolors are nice in that they have a waxy consistency, and blend together nicely if you already know which colors you want to use (it's a nightmare if you decide to use some other color that won't as readily blend). So, more than likley, it was a smoother texture, in that I don't see too many huge gaping holes in the main bulk of the drawing (in other words, the paper grain doesn't show through too much).

Thanks for asking, and thanks for the comment.

i love the narrative, you seem to work with universal behavioral tendencies of animals (behaving in groups, squaring off...)

great attention to shifts in the plane, just a friggin masterpiece technically.

some really original work, you can definitely hop on the table and say " that is mine, and mine alone!".

Left one is a german shepherd, right is a bulldog, LOL (similarties in anatomy)
