Description
In my first ever tutorial, I show you how to make a lightbox by stealing doors off Ikea furniture. The end.
But for serious. I decided the quickest way to ink my Generation comic was traditionally, but I figured we would have some perspex laying around to use (actually, my first idea was to use my scanner bed. THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA. RIGHT? BECAUSE THE LIGHT IS TOTALLY ALWAYS ON)
But we didn't have any, so I was like... "Fuck, man. What's some hard transparent thing I can use?"
And there it was, like a beacon. Motherfucking Ikea furniture to the rescue. So I popped the door off one of our cabinets (Very easy, being Ikea furniture and all; you just have to lift it). Get a lamp, and presto. Instant lightbox with a lipped edge to keep your pages in place.
Inking done with a sepia Copic nib pen, Copic E71 'Champagne', and I-C comic paper

Does anyone know a good price for actual, non-IKEA furniture lightboxes?
My art teacher got a good one for about $60 and I want to know if that's a good price.

Nice work!
Luckily for me I found an old doctors xray viewer on the side of the road. Hello lightbox! It works a treat, adjustable light strength and all.
But before that I had a home made job. It was just an old scanner that I gutted, cut a hole in, and stuck a light inside. Worked ok I guess.

Awesome!
I had a coffee table with a glass top in my 1st apartment. I used to just lay the lamp under it and use it like that.
But it was my roomies so I dont have it anymore XP looks like i'll keep my eye on Ikea lol.

Ha ha, brilliant! Looks like you'd have to bend over and be uncomfortable to draw on it though.

You can ink it with a straight back, though, I tend to lean over it . I sit on the other chair and cross my legs so the door is propped in the crook of my knees and against the back of the other chair. But I'm sure there's other ways to rest it over things for a better drawing position. For the first couple of pages I was resting it flat over the top of two chairs. As long as you can stick some light behind it :'D

I was just thinking 'maybe I could build up legs with books and make it like a glass topped table...' and then I realised I actually have a table with a glass top. HURR why did I never think of this before?
Lamp under glass table = poor mans lightbox.

At least with Ikea furniture it's designed to be taken apart

Thanks :'D
Mostly I was desperate because I needed to start inking that night. I also thought of using the boxy, plastic 'cover' for one of our old record players, but I think this works much better.

I would think so too. Using a record player cover might have worked too, but would've been more awkward and uncomfortable to use.
