Description
Alrighty, as requested, here's a tutorial on how I draw satyrs!Disclaimer time: There are all sorts of ways to draw, and all kinds of different guidelines people use - this just happens to be the way I do it, and my preferred style of satyr. Hopefully it helps, or at least gets you going in the right direction. ^_^
First time doing a tutorial.
Pencil-ish lines and ink done in Manga Studio EX 3.0
Color and tutorial done in Photoshop 7.0

Thank you. ^_^
As for the line art tutorials, you can find ones specific to various programs (Photoshop, SAI, etc), but any tutorial's usefulness depends entirely on what, exactly, you're looking for. Are you just looking for basic tips, how to use the various tools, or something more specific?

I have to say, this is insanley cool. I love how detailed it is; The directions are persise, the refference picture is very well drawn and fits perfectly for this tutorial, Plus the picture examples and ideas you gave were very helpful!
All though, I must point out somthing about the comment on "The Faun route" and "Deer inspired". Faun actually are not deer inspired at all. They are as closely related to the goat as satyr are. In fact, Fauns and satyrs are basicly the some creature with different backstories. The faun being a roman version of the Satyr, and a Satyr being the Greek version of a faun. Though I've actually read that Fauns originally had human feet as opposed to hooves, and that satyrs were originally beastly creatures, like furry, two-legged minataurs. Or something like that...

You're right, of course, about fauns and satyrs (It's been two years since I did this tutorial, so I don't know what exactly I was thinking, but probably some sort of homophonic fun with words that is only amusing if everyone's aware of it... if I can find the font I used, I'll go back and change it just to avoid future confusion, so thanks for pointing that out ).
I haven't looked too far back into fauns, but what, exactly, the satyrs looked like in Greek mythology varies from myth to myth and author to author. At the core, they're either nature spirits or just followers of Dionysus and Pan. In the early depictions, if they have any animalistic attributes at all, they're just long ears and a tail - and those were often that of a horse or donkey rather than a goat.
The goatness, in fact, seems to have started really being associated with satyrs after they were linked with the Roman fauns. Add to this the existence of the Panes (who DID have goat attributes in the manner of the god Pan) and the Silens (who had horse ears and tails but occasionally sported a pair of ox-horns) and it can get very complicated.
Despite all that variety, however, the common image in modern fantasy seems to be the goat-legged one, so that's what I usually stick with for my fantasy satyrs.
Thanks for the comment! ^_^

Hmmm. Yes, I have as well seen many artists versions of Satyrs, and almost all DA artists versions of Satyrs revolve around the (nowaday) Typical, Half-goat half human Satyr. Which I understand, because this type of Satyr is certainly the most popular.
I know not much more about fauns, but, from what I've heard, no female faun existed in mythology. Although, I have heard other legends that revolve around female faun, but I can't be sure if they had actually ever existed, or if they were just as common as male faun.
Thankyou, anyway, for the very informational reply. ( And, by the way, I found this DA artist's comparisine between faun and satyr. I found it very interesting. [link] )

From what I can tell, there were satyresses and female fauns, but they were a much later addition. They were, at the very least, found in the work of Renaissance artists. On a related note, there are also female centaurs ("kentaurides") in art, and references to them in literature around the first century AD. Both are much rarer than their male counterparts, of course, and it depends on when you cut off what you consider the classic mythology.
*laughs* And thanks for the link. That also seems to be a common perception.

I write up an article on a preternatural creature with their habits and how they fit into our world. That I've been putting up as a journal.
Then I draw up and send in a picture of the creature, then put it on as my favourite.
