the separate images, I guess, it depends on what type of journal you have and if you use icyworlds, it is more probable to use separate images like one for the header or one for the footer or a background pattern for the body.
There are useful templates you can use on deviantart to code for a journal. I have links to those in this description but don't forget, that the only way you can use a custom journal, is to have a premium membership

The separate images. Depending on your layout. Most people make a header image, a background image or pattern and footer.

It depends on you but seing that not everyone has a widescreen or big monitors I would make it work from 300px wide to 450-700px wide

CSS code is a language to make a website look in a certain way. If you want to make a journal for deviantart look different from the standard, then you can make your own CSS code to reflect that. This tutorial was made to show you how to upload your code with others if you want to.
Now do you understand?

Your tutorial helped me a lot creating my very first journal skin: Beauty of the Dead
I credited you linking back to the actual tutorial page and your deviantart profile; both in artist's comments and at journal footer.
Thanks.

Really I can't understand the first part of the tutorial...
Cuz I don't understand what code goes in every place of the precode...
Also when I submit it it appears as a normal literature dev...

Kjherstin In reply to Chivi-chivik [2011-08-16 20:03:55 +0000 UTC]
In the first part of the tutorial, I give you 4 different situations, depending on what kind of CSS you coded for. You just have to choose one of those templates.

But I don't know which code goes in the normal place, which one goes in the header place and which one in the footer place... :/

Oh of course, only if you are subscribed to deviantart can you use journal skins unless there is a special event where they allow you to use them for a limited time free

You uploaded it to the wrong section. In section 1 of the tutorial, I say that you need to upload it to
deviantART Related / deviantART Skins / Journal
and you uploaded it to
deviantART Related / deviantART Skins & Scripts / Journal & Gallery Skins / Complete Journal & Gallery CSS

They changed it, sorry...It's been a while since I shared an installable journal skin.
The section you need to upload it to is:
deviantART Related > deviantART Skins & Scripts > Journal & Gallery Skins >

That's weird because I tried doing it on my stock account which doesn't have a premium membership and it worked. It should work...I will try and look into this and let you know

It was a message saying it could not upload the images for the cursors.
but I got it to work after messing around with it for a while.

probably you were uploading the wrong file or a file with a modified name from the one in the code, perhaps?
It's a good thing you were able to figure it out
