Description Just versions of the German flag used between 1806 and 1848 (pre-March, Hambach Festival, March Revolution).

Which version is your favorite?
Of course I love 1, but I also like 7 and 9^^

I believe non of those would be heraldicly correct. Maybe version 8 would be, I'm not sure. In heraldics two "colors" can't be next to each other. There has to be a "metal" between them, in this case "gold" (which is portrayed as yellow)

Having that said, I personally like version 2.

I'm not aware of the colors being used prior to the Hambach Festival. I know that it is said that the "Burschenschaften" (students' fraternities, I guess) after whose flag the colors were picked used to make up a considerable amount of the LΓΌtzow Free Corps in the struggle against Napoleon who used the colors (kinda) for their uniforms. But there was no flag around at this time.

I like version 9, it reminds me of a similar design I used a long time ago 0.o with different colors. Not sure what inspired me at that time.Β

And Version #6 is also the flag of the short lived Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic, existed only a few months in 1918. I think it's yellow for armenia, black for georgia, and red for azerbaijan. You can also see it here:

4 and 7 personally. The 6 looks like a reversed version of the flag of the first Belgian revolution in 1789Β de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vereinig…

For some reason I like 8. Simple and stylish. And I'm from Finland, so I see cross-flags most often. It just fits in my eyes. 7 is too strange for me, it doesn't look European at all. But of course, the 1 is not bad at all, I'm glad they chose it.

Have to say I think Version 5 is most appropriate. From what I know, the black-gold-red scheme is meant to symbolize the unification and liberation of Germany, black representing disunity and subordination, gold representing solidarity and sovereignty, and red representing the German blood spilled to achieve such. Version 5 depicts these themes bottom-to-top in chronological order, representing the rise of Germany.

It's not "meant" to be. It's just what some poets liked to attribute to the colors. The history of the color can be traced back to the uniform colors of the LΓΌtzow Free Corps in the Napoleonic wars.

But the german colours are special, like the colours of fire^^

Ever seen, that extremely many countries have the combination: blue-white-red? France, USA, Russia, Netherlands, England...

Kaiserreich choice of colors was better in my opinion, but even this one can look nice, just add german eagle into it upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Unofficial_Flag_of_Germany_(with_Coat_of_arms).png this would be better official flag of germany, more "proud" and less plain and .."boring"?

the flag of the Kaiserreich? it's boring... it hadn't got a history it just was something artificial... like the flag of the Czech republic or the flag of Kosovo

I love my black-red-gold flag!

so where is the "tradition boundary"? all flags are at beggining "new" and "artifical"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HenningKleist In reply to Jaldithas [2015-08-08 08:36:56 +0000 UTC]

To be fair: the Kaiserreich colors (black white red) have some history, as a combination of Prussia and the Hanseatic cities. But I agree that it's hardly fit to be considered "national colors" of Germany. I would dare to say that those are seperatist colors (like the American confederist flag). It was the flag of the North German Confederation which was instituted by Prussia after it has betrayed the German Confederation of which Austria was the head. So Prussia got rid of Austria and the proto-democratic German Confederation and instituted its own thing to which after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71 the other remaining German states joined. And that's what we call "Germany" now... it's a shame.

Sorry, my mistake. Both flags were actually proposed by Josef Wirmer, who was not a member of the Kreisauer Kreis, but of the affiliated group of the 20th of July around Goerdeler and Stauffenberg. And one of them was taken up by the CDU.
