thanks friends.
for ages i was searching for the english equivalent for salunki. i never knew that the pair of salunkis are in fact mynahs. i have been seeing these birds but did not know they were mynahs! so much for ignorance. for years a pair of mynahs have been regularly visiting my flat in Bombay. in fact they wake me up in the morning. they look at me with their round eyes fearlessly, because they wear a patch of yellow mask of ZORO! they saunter about, talking to themselves-a pair of young lovers who do notice the watchful world outside. one moves. the other follows tirelessly. they fly together to the next building. then they fly back. a pretty game of kho-kho!
they do not make such harsh noises as described by some of you. i always imagined mynas as birds with melodious voices like the cuckoo. blame it on the school text books! (a gang of beautiful rowdy parrots here is the worst noise polluter). am pained to see them referred to as pests. or perhaps i am in love with them! they have beautiful yellow beaks with a faint orange tint. their yellow legs are elegant. their steel grey browning feathers are fascinating.
finally a pair of salunkis are the perfect example of-pyaar ka bandhan, janam ka bandhan tootte naa.
thanks once again.

I'll concur on the pest - the Mynahs are declared pests in South Africa as well. However, they are wonderful mimics.

in india only crow and rats are declared pest that is any body is allowed to kills these two species but for religious reasons no body kills crows .i know in many parts of the world Mynah are declared pest but i love this bird( i also love crow as photographic object)i am also aware there are projects carried out by government authority to control the population of these birds (they make so much noise when i groups) other wise their voice is very sweet this one is common mynah some species are very beautiful

They're good luck in groups? Really? I never knew that... Here in Australia, they are pests, but I hear they are actually very intelligent birds... Not just the noisy ugly things we see them as...

they are for no reason linked with parrot (there are many stories where in maina is described as counter part of parrot for parrot the local word is 'tota' and there are many stories describing 'tota maina' )i have seen them eating all kinds of incects they look ugly for their black or brownish color but there beack and eyes and legs are bright yellow there is another story where in maina has stolen legs from peacock that is peacock is so beautiful and its legs are ugly maina borrowed the legs on marriage day and never returned the legs to peacock
