In this particular photo, I used the natural lighting instead of a fill flash and changed the white balance. This is a male box turtle, commonly found in Oklahoma, but usually overlooked.

I get similar looks at the park all the time- crouching down to take shots of "weeds"
I don't know that I'd be brave enough to lay down that close to a highway, though!

Thanks! I think you are right. This one looks more natural and is softer on the eyes. Where as the fill flash on the other one created a harsher, more artificial look.
