Description
Redo of an older picture of Trenton from four(!) years ago, ‘cept this time I included an apprehensive Cornelia and replaced the fire torch with Trenton’s magic ;D I’m thinking of using this type of style for the comic from now on (uncolored lineart with white outlines) since coloring in the lineart took up a lot of time and this is much easier.Cornelia Hayden & Trenton Maverick©Capella336

Oooo!!! This is super cool! I love the sharp, contrast in lighting here- it really is one of your strengths! Plus the changes in tone are incredible, the green to copper to brown for the background lighting is incredible! I love the silhouettes too and the blaze of light coming from Trenton's hand looks like it could blast through a brick wall- or two! I love the difference in their expressions too, Cordelia looks more cautious and Trenton, as always, looks confidence and bad-ass!

Thank you so much! Lighting is one of my favorite (if not my favorite) aspects of digital art, so I'm glad you like how it looks! I've been playing around with different ways to draw Trenton's powers, and this is probably the easiest since it doesn't involve any lineart...always a plus! lol Haha, Cornelia is none too excited about getting pulled along on this little expedition!

I live this new color style! I like Cornelia's expression and overall posture!

Thanks! She's still not comfortable with carrying around a gun (or sneaking around in dangerous areas with Trenton lol)!

She's not buying what you're shoveling, Tren. XD Great expression lol
I do like the black lines a lot! The white outline helps it pop away from the bg too :3 Colored lines look nice but they can take SO. MUCH. TIME. and they are so easy to fudge up ><;;; and sadly even the little fudges seem to pop out a lot.

She's considering ditching him on this expedition and going back to the nice, safe ship. XD
Thank you! Oh, yeah! That's the one thing I hate about coloring the lineart! DX I try to make it big enough so that when it's scaled down on dA or another site the mistakes aren't that noticeable...but I notice them...

Take a bubble bath, read a nice book, and then get ready to clean him up when he drags his carcass home XD Poor woman.
:nodnod: c_x no matter how long I stare- I won't see the mistake until I upload it. Every. Time.

Cornelia: Oh you're back. How did it go?
Trenton: *groans of pain*
Cornelia: I'll get Stitches...
You think you have eagle eyes until you work with digital art!

Oh wow your style has improved a lot. I think your anatomy has improved quite a bit while still keeping your more stylized approach. Have you tried overlay or soft layer for your lineart? It can make it colorized instantly with black lines so you don't have to go through and color them on your own. You have to mess with it bit to get it to look how you want but is much faster. I like the black lines too though. I need to insert that "both are good" meme here xD
Cornelia's hair is gorgeous here too!! *O* I love it!

Thank you so much! I've tried those before but it never seems to work with my style, at least when I do the lineart digitally. I use that technique all the time for coloring my pencil/pen sketches and it seems to mesh better with the traditional lines, so I dunno! I might try it again with the digital lines to see if it will look better now...
I wish I had hair like that! XD

I get'cha, it's all about experimentation really lol You can also try a muted purple/redish lineart on multiply. It works a bit better than the overlayed black.
Lol it is beautiful hair!

Cornelia is packing too! I just love this picture. The texture and the colors. Oh and the shading is super awesome! Plus it's always cool to see Trenton's powers.

Yep! Eventually the crew figures she ought to learn how to shoot a gun after a few close calls. ;D
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with the atmosphere for this piece!

Now I think that this is a nice trade off... you don't loose any of the quality and I really like it. The shading and the white outlines give it a cool feel... and those shadows... that had to take some time. (the wrinkles are amazing!) If this is a lot easier than doing it the old way then GO WITH IT!
I love the 'apprehensive' Cornelia in the back... following Trenton around must be tiresome. lol

Thank you so much! The shadows were surprisingly easy since I was using a strong light source so I didn't have to go into too many details as I normally would. I feel like I've been getting more confident with clothes lately so that's great to hear too!
YES! I WILL! The workflow is soooo much faster!
lol She's regretting getting on his ship in the first place!

Well he just looks older, and like he might be more serious, but that's part of the 'joy' of redrawing characters over the ages, they change to be closer to what we envision

Wow! This is so much better than the original version. I was reading through your comic yesterday (for reasons) and the improvement from the beginning to the current point is quite dramatic. Love the creepy black veins(?) branches(?) in the background and the sickly green light emanating from Trenton's magic. I'm really rather excited to see him use it in the comic!!
This new style looks really good. You should definitely go for it if this method is more efficient. There's something classic about black outlines in comic art that's always appealing. How on earth did you manage to get the white outlines to follow your black outlines so neatly though?

LadyPep In reply to Vivocateur [2018-05-01 21:37:34 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much! I...really want to redraw those two early chapters now but I should probably wait until later on down the line.
I was going for shadows on rocks in a cave, but any sort of menacing environment works here! I've been working on scripts/thumbs for chapters 5-8 and it looks like Trenton will finally use his magic in Chapter Nine...in volume three.
There will be some exposition on the magic system in chapter eight though (and I might sneak in some flashback-y pictures of him during that sequence as an Easter Egg ;D)!
Thanks! I read a lot of comics and most use the black lineart+shadows, which I could never achieve since my shadows looked muddy when done that way in the past. I duplicated the colors folder and merged the duplicate layer, then control clicked the duplicate layer and set the outlines to about 10 px thickness (set to "center") before filling that in on a new layer behind that with white. It's the easiest way to achieve that trick since doing it on the colors layer would cause the white lines to leak into the lineart and make it look sloppy. DX

Ooo nice! I really like that new style for the lines, almost makes it look like an old cell from a traditionally animated movie. Love the expression on Cornelia's face, like, "I don't want to be here"

Thank you! That's sort of what I was thinking too actually.
That's Cornelia's expression for a good first half of the comic.

I guess in a way our old art is supposed to have that affect on us. It adds purpose to the artistic goals we set for ourselves~
