Anix is a draenix; a dragon crossed with a phoenix.Basically, my lovely Simon likes dragons and phoenixes, so I decided that i would have fun painting him a little hybrid beast. And red and black are his fave colors, so that's how this little beauty came around.
Something like 12 hours to completely, those feathers kicked my ass. I pray I never decide to do another bird again at that kind of closeup, because I don't want to labor over them again. Although, in honestly, I did have some fun doing them. Kept staring at my bird to get the details, using him as a living reference. He enjoyed the attention, and I learned some things about the details of feathers.
So, yeah...well...Simon, I love you. I hope you enjoy this little girl!

Clearly I haven't looked through my devwatch for too long, because if I'd really seen this before, I'd commented at once. It's great. I love the texture on the feathers, it's so detailed. The only thing I have to criticise is the composition, I don't know what's meant to be in focus, but if it's the head, it's perhaps a little too much to the middle of the picture? I don't know, I just find myself focusing on the wings instead (the darker areas on either side of the head). Other than that, it's really cool, and it's a cool concept as well. I'd never find the patience to work on a piece like this...

sometimes i just fuck up a composition because i'm working with a new subject. it's mostly that i'm not as comfortable as i would be with something i know well. this was mostly a design piece.

*can't stop laughing* yes, actually, I've started notcing some real improvements. and i'm able to look back and see where i could really punch up some old pieces, but i'm not the type to rework a lot of things.

Oh so interesting of an idea, I haven't heard of a phoenix/dragon cross...is this your creative mind at work? That eye just jumps out at you in realism! It is perfect with all of the subtle shades and highlights. Is there some symbolism to the black feather? The feathers are a pain in the butt aren't they? But, you did them well.

Yeah, this was entirely random creativity. Just sitting there, and Simon couldn't decide which he liked more, and he said he really liked them both, so I thought it would be a good thing.
Feathers suck so bad....it angers me. 8P Well, not anger so much as frustrate right in to a corner. Just one of those things I admire people who have the patience to do that all the time.
No real symbolism to the colored feathers, so much as just wanting to put some markings on the bird. Like, my Aleister has three red feathers in his wing, that he uses as part of his displays, so I figured a draenix would have one too.
