Description IMPORTANT: He is NOT ME.

He is a different personage, one completely unrelated to me, who happens to only carry the same alias as me.
While I chose my alias myself because I like the stone, the same one was given to him because of his appearance.

WARNING: His story and life is quite heavy and violent. Not for the faint and sensitive to read.

LIFE STORY

The story of Lapis – a tragedy or a horror story, it's difficult to tell – was completely unknown until he met Lesphar and his life became entwined with the sea devil. At that time the dragon was a local phenomenon in the coastlands of the Erada peninsula, known mostly to the towns he pestered as a lone violent beast they couldn't seem to get rid of and who couldn't seem to shake their attention to him either. He had a feral life in the feet of the forested hills in the central part of the peninsula and lived off of whatever he could snatch. The locals – predominately orcs – and their cattle were his most usual target for hunting because they were larger, more abundant and way easier to catch than the scarce forest-dwelling prey. Expectedly, that provoked the orcs to try hunt him down, yet he somehow managed to survive each time, which was usually not the case with most of his attackers. A few times they captured him, but despite the brutal means they used to subdue him, he always escaped laying waste around himself. Eventually, one of the towns decided to tame and use him for military needs. They managed to capture and imprison him, but instead of a weapon as they had hoped, he became a curse in a cage. Despite spending weeks trying to break his will with starvation and torture, the orcs accomplished nothing but driving the beast even more violent. Eventually they gave up and left him starving. It was a matter of time he would starve to death or they would kill him.

Around that time Lesphar learned about the stray sea dragon and his plight. The sea devil was devoted to the wellbeing of fellow sea creatures – and often rescued them from land-dwelling hands – he went inland to find the dragon. He found him in a very miserable condition – lean as a skin-covered skeleton, half of his colors bleached off and the other half faded because of starvation, with scars and his own dried bloodstains all over – and yet with violent defiance and burning hatred in his eyes still. With a little trickery, the sea devil managed to fool the orcs and free him, and the two of them fled into the nearby forest. From there Lesphar attempted to take the dragon back into the sea, but to his utter astonishment the dragon refused to return where he belongs, and did so violently. He refused to even approach or look at the sea, he refused seafood and he made it clear there is nothing in the world he hates more than the sea – to the devil's utter frustration. Never before had he met a sea creature who hated the Sea – the Allmother. He couldn't fathom it, but he couldn't find it in himself to leave the poor beast alone on land either. So he was determined to find a way.

Lesphar lived with the bleached sea dragon for several weeks in the forest, only once in a while returning to the sea to see his capricorns. He brought him food and made sure the orcs never find him again, while the dragon was recovering from his diminished state and numerous injuries. He never spoke why he hated the sea though, nor even a word of his past. Unable to learn even his real name, Lesphar fashioned him a new one – Lapis. The sea devil named him after the beautiful stone for the unique pattern of his skin, but he was aware his skin was an indication of the hardships he had been through. Lesphar had never seen anything like it and could only guess how long the dragon must have lived out of the sea for his skin and wings to begin losing their natural blue color so radically. His determination to put an end to it only stronger, and he started studying the dragon and theorizing what could have brought him to this unnatural state of mind. He made a few assumptions about the past Lapis wouldn't talk about and he continued from there; and although his speculations were rather off track, eventually this made Lapis speak up. The truth was, he didn't understand his own feelings and he didn't even remember what brought them in the first place.

At first, all Lapis could remember was that he had been very violent even as a youngling. He remembered his parents as very loving and caring dragons who did all they could to make him happy. Despite their love, he was vile and aggressive, often turning his anger even to them. He understood, however, that they were good beings and didn't deserve to be hurt. So eventually he left them behind and exiled himself, to spare them the pain of the evil he had become. He wandered the sea alone for some time, yet felt miserable and hateful, and after a while he realized that it was the sea itself that made him feel this way. He moved to live in the woodlands on shore instead, and decided he hates the sea and never wants to return to it. He never knew why he felt this way, but having heard his story, Lesphar dug deeper into the dragon's psyche.... until he finally unravelled it all.

What Lapis couldn't remember was a single memory from his early childhood, which his mind had blocked away completely yet which was the key to his entire life. When he was little, Lapis was a curious and bright whelp who loved exploring the seas on his own. He was a little bit shy, but he had a young orca friend called Yily, whom he loved her deeply and sincerely. The little dragon had even learned to talk to the creature in her own language – which is how he had learned her name, too. Yily was a cheerful and loving being, she and Lapis spent hours playing, racing each other and exploring the sea far and wide together. Until one day, during one of their races, Yily came across fishing nets and got tangled up. Lapis, who was ahead, came back to try to free her, but before he could do that, the fishermen pulled the nets out of the sea and hoisted them both on the deck of their small ship. Lapis panicked and froze, he had never seen land-dwellers before, nor did he know what they do. Ignoring the small dragon at first, they killed Yily and began chopping her body into pieces in front of his eyes, turning his beloved best friend into a horror of mangled insides and blood. When one of the fishermen noticed him and started his way with a cleaver still drenched in her blood, Lapis' instincts kicked in, he scrambled out of the net, jumped overboard and fled into the deep as fast as he could. He hid alone in a deep underwater cave for several days before he could even remember where he is. His mind blocked the memory of that day and when he eventually returned home, he no longer remembered. After that day he was never the same again.

As Lesphar dug deep enough into his feelings the dragon's memories began to emerge – and the sea devil managed to pull them out to the surface. Once made to remember, it threw Lapis off for days, his aggression burst against Lesphar to the point the dragon made to kill him. But the sea devil simply surrendered to his rage, he allowed him let out his wrath, and with that the wrath subsided and gave way to the sorrow and pain underneath. Soon after that Lapis consented to return to the sea with Lesphar, but he refused to let go of him and became his permanent companion. As of that day forth, Lesphar is his only friend and Lapis shares his devotion to the Sea and the protection of all its beings – although their methods for it most of the time substantially differ. Despite returning to the sea, Lapis never spoke of his parents and never revealed his real name, having considered that the one he was born as died together with Yily.

OCCUPATIONS

During the years he lived on shore, Lapis was a feral who didn't care about much more than his immediate survival. He hunted just enough so he didn't starve and fought only when he had to because he was being hunted by the locals. Because of that he remained lean, and the apathy that took him over most of the time made him unexpectedly easier to assault. Though when trouble came down on him – and that was fairly often – both his instincts and aggression served him well and saved his life many times. He was violent, but reckless in battle, which is what contributed to the land-dwellers occasionally overpowering him. However, the many assaults and the bitter experience of being captured made him learn to fight, survive and maim his enemies before they could maim him. By the time Lesphar found him, he was in a bad shape, but had built up speed, strength and formidable fighting skills that already made him an extremely dangerous beast.

After Lesphar rescued him – both from captivity and from his own inner turmoil, Lapis became his companion and devoted his life to pretty much the same that drove the sea devil himself: the well-being of the sea dwellers. Just like he had violently hated the Sea and everything about it before, after he realized why the Sea meant so much pain for him the violent hatred turned inside out into violent, fanatical devotion and hatred for the land-dwellers instead. He became determined to protect his home and fellow sea creatures from the assaults of the land-dwellers and lay waste to anyone who dared take lifes from the Sea. He sees vengeance against those who kill sea beings as the best way to make sure they will not do it ever again – especially if they die painfully in the process. All the hatred and aggression he has accumulated through his life, ever since the death of his childhood's best friend, found an incessant outlet in that occupation. Lapis started wandering the outer sea, dragging Lesphar along, looking for offenders to punish for their transgressions. Each time he sees a crime against sea life by the land-dwellers his hatred bursts anew and he goes into a rampage, often wiping out families, sometimes entire fishing villages, for the transgressions of one. In his rage, he doesn't care about being injured in battle – especially since because he has been captured and brutalized so many times in his youth, pain doesn't scare him but rather provokes his passionate rage even more. The many years of battles have also made him an unmatched fighter who can trust his instincts and skills to keep him alive and avert serious damage. The many scars he receives regularly testify of his rampant way of fighting, particularly his tail, which usually looks quite ragged, because he regularly uses it to lash and tear through the buildings of the land-dwellers. The many scars also serve him well by making his appearance match his violent character and instill fear in those who face him. To add more effect to that, Lapis often drenches himself in the blood of his victims before he continues on to the next ones. Blood – whether his own or belonging to his victims – is often to be seen upon him. Since he was made to remember the first brutal bloodshed he witnessed, he has been repeating the same to those he holds accountable for innocent seablood spilt. When fighting and killing his enemies, Lapis very seldom uses his firebreath – instead, he uses his claws and fangs to rend them to pieces and make them suffer for a while before they die, relishing their pain and unleashing the full power of his sadistic hatred which they themselves created over the years.

That sadistic, relentless nature, along with his sheer power and murderous proficiency, make Lapis one of the most dreaded beasts to have ever dwelled in the Nehellmyr Sea. The land-dwellers often call him The Curse of The Sea – and ever since he learned that, he takes pride in it and just as proudly continues his efforts to keep up the name and justify it. Despite his cruelty is often excessive and despite strictly speaking the sea devil doesn't entirely approve of his methods, Lesphar, knowing his story, considers his preferred way of dealing with what he hates to hold a dark kind of justice – the land-dwellers suffering incessantly from the curse they created themselves. For that reason, while he doesn't aid the dragon, he doesn't stand in the way of his rage and vengeance either, giving him his silent consent.

However, while Lapis is extremely cruel towards the land-dwellers, he transforms completely when he is among those of the Sea. He loves them in a selfless way, not unlike the sea devil himself, not needing their closeness, but the peace of watching from afar as they live their lifes naturally and unharmed by the land-dwelling enemies. Among the sea beings Lapis is silent, shy and reclusive, much closer to his childhood self than his sinister present fame, and he only enjoys watching their beauty from a distance, preferably unnoticed and unknown. Over the years, however, they've grown to know him and what he does, and as much as the land-dwellers fear and hate him, the sea beings respect and love him. Many actually see him as the Guardian of their home and of themselves. One of his favourite occupations when he isn't killing, ever since he first met Lesphar, is to listen to the capricorn songs and marvel at their beauty. One of the things he shares with Lesphar, in fact.

________________________________

Ah, I finally finished this. I started it a looooooong time ago, and even since longer I really wanted to do it. The reason: I really LOVE this dragon so much, always did, he is one of my closest and one of the most prominent, oustanding and unique persons I know from my world, and well while I do love his personality, his unique appearance is also not to underestimate. I always found him extremely beautiful and somehow the numerous scars don't take away from it but actually add something further. My idea of beauty may have its twists.... much like my likings, because I do love him for his sadistic nature and evil precisely. Ever since he first appeared on a random sketch so many, many years ago (but already carrying bits of his story), I was always deeply emotionally involved in his story. It took years to discover what really happened to him. I wrote a whole story about how Lesphar found and rescue him in an attempt to understand his personality and their bond - and yet so much remained still hidden and I only learned years later still. All this time, the more I got to know, the more I loved him. Now he and Lesphar are.... probably my very best favourite among all about whom I've ever written.
So yeah, I really wanted to make him a reference. In fact, when I decided to try doing references, he was the other of the first two that occurred to me quite instantly (the other being Karren'Rex, naturally). It was a must. And it's also a big thing because I haven't drawn him in many, many, many years, and I really missed that. In fact.... I've only drawn him twice before (thrice, if you count the aforementioned sketch, but it was only lineart), and part of the reason is that his appearance not easy to draw. That's why it was a bit intimidating to initiate now, but I must say I am VERY happy with the result. Finally, my dear Lapis (not me) has a proper reference. I wanna draw him more in the future as well, we'll see how that goes.

Yeah, once again to mention: despite his nickname is Lapis like the first part of mine and despite my deep liking for him, we aren't related, he isn't an "alter ego" or anything of the sort. A coincidence of names, nothing more.
To illustrate why Lesphar gave him this name, it is because of how the lapis lazuli mineral naturally occurs in rocks .
