This is how I think the Pokemon in the 'gender unknown egg group' (or all Pokemon in general) are tricked into breeding with Ditto. If you don't know, Pokemon in this egg group can only breed with Ditto. They can't even breed with their own kind! Just imagine their happiness when they actually produce an egg.ΒAnyway, it's sad that Ditto can't breed with other Dittos.

Back in the original show there was a Ditto whose face never changed. It tried to be a Machoke, and it still had it's original Ditto face. People who saw that episode when it aired tend to remember the fact that it's face didn't change and like to keep that little tid bit since it was rather humorous.

I want to know what prevents a Ditto from breeding with another Ditto.

my theory is that Dittos naturally have no sex drive...until they transform into another pokemon.
When breeding, the ditto transforms into the same species as its mate and is probably then effected by the urge.
When a Ditto tries to breed with another Ditto...you have two Dittos trying to transform into each other...Paradox.

Ditto can breed with any Pokemon but itself (Not counting the ones that don't have an egg group), certain Pokemon can breed with Ditto but not with their own kind... Pokemon logic at it's finest XD

Well, my theory is that a scientist was experimenting to make a new type of gum, like you said, but something went wrong and the gum came to life, turning into what we know as ditto.

now imagine the day when Manaphy discovers that the other Manaphy was actually a Ditto. ( i will treat Manaphy as a male cuz it's easier ).
He discovers that all his dreams and memories were fake, that he loved someone who can be anyone, his heart breaks, he became cold and isolate himself from everyone, even friends in another species of pokemons. As other Pokemons find their partners, he's jealous and memories of fake love come back, making him more angry and grumpy. He realize that he can't be happy, that he can't give anyone happines so many deserve. Growing old he became grumpy,Β embittered and lonely. He isolated himself so he couldn't hurt anyone and himself, to avoid pain that comes with love for him, but i reality he only gave himself more pain. He die unloved and forgoten by anyone.
