Description Dimensions: 27X27X1. Blocks used: 423 sand blocks, 306 cobblestone blocks, 27 dirt blocks (total of 756 blocks). Time wasted: too much.

I was inspired by some picture I saw when I looked for Minecraft on Google images, or on dA, or something.
It's a QR code (something like a 2D bar-code). Scan it if you can.

My first art in non-classic Minecraft. Took me a few hours to plan, prepare and produce.
It's nice to watch.

(May be unscanable. I uploaded the original image to my scrapbook, if you're interested in scanning it.)
(I may try and make the stone parts darker, shoot the picture again from a different spot, and re-upload it.)

-------
*23.12.10 CHANGE: I put a screenshot from a different angle, due to claims about it being unscanable. Hopefully this one will work out.

**24.12.10 UPDATE: I tried my previously mentioned idea to make the cobblestone blocks look darker. It doesn't work for big structures, due to the third dimension the game possesses. The idea was to put the dark blocks 1 block behind the bright blocks, so that some shadow will fall on the darked blocks, making them darker. When put to the use on a big structure, the darker blocks are being hidden behind the brighter blocks, around the edges. When standing directly in front of those dark blocks, they DO appear darker.
NOTE: when in the middle of a structure, and being observed from a distance, it may work.

***24.12.10 CHANGE: back to original picture, which was said to actually be scanable.

****14.1.11 UPDATE: Newly colored wool blocks! I see a chance to use less obsidian, and more wool!

My 3DS registered it, but text is not compatible. It is able to be scanned, though.

HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME! do you mind if I ever use this type of thing at the ending of an adventure map to send people to a website? I never knew that you could do that using minecraft blocks. I wonder if it would work better with white and black wool...

LforLight In reply to Deadmeat553 [2012-01-07 20:10:58 +0000 UTC]

It should work well with black and white wool, as the contrast is higher. I made it from cobblestone and sand because it was before the time of colored wool, and those seemed the easiest materials I could use to have a distinction between light and dark blocks.

what about obsidian? couldn't you have used that?

LforLight In reply to Deadmeat553 [2012-01-08 18:12:58 +0000 UTC]

That is an excellent question, sir! If you happen to look at my scrap book, or at my "that's what she said" creation, you may see I did try to replace the sand with wool and the cobble with obsidian. Unfortunately, the process was extremely tedious and boring, and I just stopped working on it at some point.
With the new updates that occurred during the release of the colored wool I started a second world, and lost interest in the first one and its creations. Further more, in later visits to the world I noticed it's very laggy. Probably from all the water streams I made around it. I tried continuing the sand to wool and cobble to obsidian change, but got tired of it after mere minutes.

I agree with this QR code 100%. It does, it really does. (I dont want to spoil it for anyone else ^_^)

SN: Scanned it with my DROID 3, using 3 different apps (QR Droid, ShopSavvy, and QR Barcode Scanner).

rueyeet [2011-08-10 17:20:05 +0000 UTC]

I was gonna say, obsidian or black wool...but obsidian is difficult to get that much of, and this was obviously made before colored wool was available.

So yeah.

Still, very original idea!

I actually started changing the cobblestone into obsidian and the sand into white wool, but it turned out to be very VERY boring. It's a very long process.
You can kinda see it in my "That's What She Said" Minecraft art, in the background.

I googled "QR code generator". First result, surprisingly, provided a QR code generator.
If you're asking how it works, I guess you could look at the "QR code" article at Wikipedia.

Now you know.
If you have the proper software, an Android phone with a barcode scanner works, you can scan those codes, and see what they mean. Who knows? Maybe there's some awesome special info on those in-game codes!

Though this took you hours and such, perhaps obsidian and sheep fur (course that would take extremely long to get that much sheep fur/stuff. But you can use the lava method to make the obsidian in the right spots, instead of mining it out.)

LforLight In reply to Toderico [2010-12-24 08:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Classic is for n00bs. Plus, I didn't think about placing lava blocks where I need them, and to use wool.
I may try the wool idea. If that works out, I will use my idea to make the cobblestone look darker. Or maybe a wood block? What do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toderico In reply to LforLight [2010-12-29 05:38:34 +0000 UTC]

A wood block is too brown for it to work, the reason why I chose wool and obsidian is because those are the closest things I can think of to being white and black. I would like to hear more on this idea to make cobblestone look darker.

LforLight In reply to Toderico [2010-12-29 18:42:25 +0000 UTC]

I mentioned it in the description box thingy my experiment. It turned to be a failure.
Doesn't the lava used to make the obsidian burn the wool? I'm trying to think of how it's practically done. Do I need to put some temporary non-flammable block beneath the lava blog, and then replace it with wool? because that would take time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toderico In reply to LforLight [2010-12-29 19:29:18 +0000 UTC]

I do believe that maybe you'd need to put possibly dirt, then pour the lava, use the water, mine out the cobblestone (from the lava spout), then dig out the dirt, and replace it with wool.

If you have a really good shovel, and plenty of buckets, then it shouldn't take too long to do, (except the gathering of the wool, that might take awhile).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LforLight In reply to Toderico [2010-12-29 19:40:01 +0000 UTC]

I can handle the wool. The lava blocks are the thing that worries me. I guess it's time to experiment some more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toderico In reply to LforLight [2010-12-29 19:52:56 +0000 UTC]

make a mold with some other nonflammable substance first, then put the lava (and turn into obsidian) as you go up, I think making some pillars as you go would work as well, just leave your wool in a chest (And put some extra buckets in the chest as well). You should only really need one water bucket, just pour above. The rest of your inventory can be the lava buckets (after you make the mold out of dirt).

Good luck if you plan on remaking the QR code thingy. What you can do is remove all the sand from your current one, replace it with dirt, then mine out the cobblestone, and do the lava thing, and replace the dirt with wool.

LforLight In reply to Toderico [2010-12-30 09:18:26 +0000 UTC]

2nd experiment, I've done it! I found out you don't have to make molds, and that you don't have to use dirt. You can put the lava directly above the wool, after you set a water block near it.
In a 3d point of view, it looks like this (left=bottom layer, right=top layer):
ADA ADA ADA
AWA ALA WDA
ADA ADA ADA
A=air, W=water block, D=don't care (what ever you have in the wall flammable or not), L=lava block
While water flows downwards, on the side of the wall, put the lava block in place. It will turn instantly into obsidian, without making lava flow from it and burn stuff. Wool is intact, and you get an obsidian block in place, without the need to make a mold. Just put a water block at its side (one block higher), place the lava, and you're done.

I love it when I get experimental results!
