Description
Because lighting is extremely important. Just a single shift can change the atmosphere of the picture. Goth enshroud by shadow looks far more dangerous and monstrous than the one that is in normal light. The tone becomes more tense and foreboding.
I love playing around with the filter. Also, I think I can work with FireAlpaca a bit better now. Too bad that it doesn't have the grain filter to make the drawing look like it belongs with the background, but oh well, I'll figure that out someday.
The backdrop is from Disney's "Peter Pan."
This interpretation of Goth belongs to me.
Goth is a character from "Silverwing" by Kenneth Oppel.

Heck yeah, I collected the trilogy and extra book! It got me hooked on bats (given my name) and I’ve reread it three times,, my all time favorite book series

It's certainly a wonderful book series. ^_^ I have all 3 books too, though I couldn't find the Darkwing one. The cartoon is pretty nice as well considering its budget, the time it was made, and the willingness to tackle some dark aspects.

Darkwing is on amazon, though it’s kinda expensive all things considered :\
I’ve never seen the cartoon, is it on YouTube or Netflix by any chance?

Depending on where you live, youtube has blocked the episodes.
But you can watch it on watchcartoononline
It's where I watch it. They have all 12 episodes listed there.

Nice!!!
I LOVE how gorgeous your design for Goth looks with the realistic vampyrum colours you gave him (also makes me think of Atkun
). I love the notches in his ears, which give him a sort of roughened, survivor look in spite of how your own designs for the bats look further from human and closer to their species' real-life appearances with the body-shapes and Goth's colours here. As I said before, the angular and elongated shape of the face together with the eye-shape is very handsome (kinda makes me think of Smaug in the 'Hobbit' films when I consider that aspect of this design X)
), and the fuzzy black facial hair on the underside of the chin makes him look especially gorgeous!!!
I also thank you for giving us a non-shadowed version so we can see what your Goth design looks like in all his full-coloured glory (from the mid-chest up anyway ) plus a BEAUTIFUL alternate version of the shot beneath where Goth's in near pitch-black shade against the lush, bright-centred jungle backround!!! The picture with the shadow effect seriously has a MARKED atmosphere difference - it feels like we're being introduced to a diabolical villain for the first time in an old mid-late 20th century animated film with the background's colours and design!!!
WONDERFUL PIECE OF WORK BY YOU, GIRL!!!
Do you plan to do a coloured version of your Goth, Melody and Marina alternate designs pic, or make alternate designs for more 'Gone Batty'/'Silverwing' characters?
BRAVO!!!

As Iron Maiden's song, Fear of the Dark goes, I have a constant fear that something's always there. This brings back fears of what could be lurking where we cannot see.

Lol! Why does everyone keep comparing my style to Don Bluth? I'm not even trying go for that. xDDD Don Bluth style is way different. I was aiming more for Disney-esque style. But with of course, my own personal touch.
Thank you!

It is quite interesting, especially with this picture. I can see, that you are not trying to imitate this special style we know from animated movies like "The Land before Time", "An American Tail" and "The Secret of N.I.M.H". Yet i can also see why people would compare it with Don Bluth. It is different, yet there are certain similarities.
Like i said, it's more noticable here. Most of your other works are distinctively different, as far as i can tell.
But no matter wich of your styles you use, it allways looks pretty nice

It certainly gives the image a very different atmosphere. It's also cool to see the colored version of your design for him, the blue eyes are an interesting choice but I think they work really well to contrast his warmer color scheme.
You can always try using textures for the grain effect, like this one which is free to use www.flickr.com/photos/kzebra/5…

You noticed his eyes, yay!!! Yeah, I picked blue because honestly, how many villains can you count from the top of your head that have gorgeous blue eyes? (aside from Gaston, but he's the only I can think of. xP) Yellow/Red/Green are over used in my opinion.
Ooh, I'll check that out :3 Thanks!

ShadowTheDragonWolf In reply to Lilgrimmapple [2018-02-13 23:00:21 +0000 UTC]
Ummm honestly only one that comes to mind right now is Lord Darcia from Wolf's Rain, but even he has one blue and one yellow eye. It definitely is one of the less typical colors for villains, probably cause old cliches die hard. Yellow/red/green/orange/purple basically anything that can pass as dark and sinister is often used for villains, especially in cartoons, blue usually being among the "good"- oh and Marluxia, Larxene, maybe some other folks from Org XIII but can't remember- so yeah, it's usually seen as a positive color and thus more common for protagonists. But I think experimenting is good and it brings fresh ideas.
You're welcome. ^^

*whispers* anime don't count. xD And practically EVERYONE in KH has blue eyes, and even then they are mainly anime characters themselves.

Fair enough, suppose anime really follows other rules, at least most of the time. But yeah definitely less common in western cartoons. Also remembered Syndrome from Incredibles has blue eyes, but it definitely is rare.
