Why do ponies say "Gentlecolts"? It doesn't make sense. It would make much more sense to say "Stallions and Gentlemares", as a colt is a young male pony, while a "Gentleman" would, in most cases, be fully grown. That aside, awesome comic!

Don't worry, I don't think an English professor would think about this kind of thing. It's not even about this comic, just something I've always wondered about. They say "Mares and Gentlecolts" on the show as well, I'm pretty sure, so you were technically correct. It's just weird to me.

I guess that's a good point. But still, one of the parts of the phrase(Mares) refers to adult ponies, while the other (Gentlecolts) refers to kids.

Mares are fully grown female horses, so Gentlemares wouldn't make sense at all.

Why wouldn't it? People (at least old texts) say Gentlewomen, and does gender really play a role here? I just think this society is at least slightly predisposed towards women, just as we are very predisposed toward men. I like to think of Pony society as a matriarchal society, one that has the social equivalent of our near future, still slightly predisposed toward men(mares in the pony case), but almost fully rooted out. Gentlemares would be an old fashioned way of speaking, but still a viable option.
