Description
It could be his rejection and defeat, or it could be the first time he fell in love with Sarah. Both are painful, thrilling falls. A little melodramatic for me, but it gets the point across. (I'm lame!)I'm stuck on that long panel look. This whole thing was an excuse to draw the animal bones on the shoulders of Jareth's owl coat in the last act of Labyrinth, and you can't see much of them. I want to do another.
This one was frustrating and I don't know how I feel about it. I did it during a bad cold, so I was cranky and stuffy and inclined to half-ass it. Goddamn, I don't know what I was thinking with all the fabric. Never again, unless I get some skills.
The title kind of needs explaining; I've been really heartbroken twice in my life, and both times the only thing that made me feel better was listening to "Drowndeep: Hula" by Maxwell. It's an undulating, underwater song, appropriately embryonic, like a good Codeine fog. It put a new feeling to the word "hula".
materials: ink and Letraset illustration marker on bristol, plus a touch of the ol' PS
music: Maxwell, "Drowndeep: Hula"

So... okay, for you to tell me that I'M amazing? Holy shit, I don't even know. I haven't even left you a comment on any of your drawings because I don't have the words. "Amazing" doesn't start to cover it.
This is a remarkable honor, to be complimented by you. Thank you so much.

Thankyou very much, you are very kind. It's an honour to be complimented by you! You can draw things that i can't! First off, i've only ever sketched one drawing on photoshop and that's it because i have simply no idea how the hell i'm supposed to colour it - so yeah, can't do photoshop/digital work lol. Second, i always have to rely on ref pics to draw from, i am hopeless at drawing things off the top of my head. I get the ideas and have an image in my brain, but when i commit it to paper it comes out really bad. Then i lose my patience lol. I love this style of work, i dunno what to call it (i'm not gonna call it 'cartoony'. I really wish i had your skills man, you've got some wicked talent, i worship you for it

P.S. I can't work PhotoShop for crap, if it makes you feel better. Digital color still gives me the heebie-jeebs!

Not that your PS skillz aren't awesome, but there's just something about the drawings you've colored with markers that's so much... better than the digitally colored ones. I really, really, really like this. The arrows seem especially appropriate given Jareth's look of an animal hunted in that outfit, and his overall bird-of-prey theme. The long frame brings Sarah's fall to mind, so it's a nice parallel. Love it.

So, uhm.. I prettymuch thought you came up with this out of the top of your head.
But ... I watched Labyrinth, again (lol I know), and just finished it now... and I totally realized that at the end with the "You have no power over me" line, that Jareth falls into his outfit, and the fabric is flying everywhere, and then he turns into an owl. When I was watching that just now.. I was like, "Omg, Lily's picture!", which was funny because I was looking for the exact point where you could literally see his heart break (sad, yea, I know).
So, uhm, yea.. thanks for helping me notice that.. haha!
It seems like every time I watch the movie I notice something new.. like this time:
- I noticed the music box that represents Sarah plays the "While the World Falls Down" tune in the beginning.
- I noticed that Sarah owns a Jareth doll that sits next to her mirror in every scene with her room (I noticed the other toys, but never the Goblin King figure ahahahhaha <3 do want!) --- [link]
- I've always noticed the "groupies" that Jareth has at the ball, but.. my god, he sure had a lot of them coming up to him and trying to kiss/hug/hit on him x) Bahaha, can't say I blame them!
- I've been paying hella close attention to whatever Jareth says, especially near the end.. and all the little nicknames he calls Sarah, and his reactions when other ... creatures.. talk about/mention her. Ie., "...The girl who ate the peach and was supposed to forget..." Jareth: *he gives a very ..thoughtful, and intense look* "What about her?.."
- And, I noticed this a couple weeks ago when I first wathced it again in the past many years, .. but did you ever notice the weird David Bowie rock illusion thing? -- [link]
Lol, yep.

I love to slow-crawl through the scenes of her room and see the things that appear later in the Underground. Hoggle as her bookend, a plush Didymus and button-eyed Firebird puppet, the Jareth figure, her princess musicbox, the Escher poster, and the children's books that influence the Labyrinth. (Ludo is an obvious ode to Where The Wild Things Are, which does make me think of Sarah's monstrous friends---"Please don't go, we'll eat you up, we love you so!")
I've been reading so much Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and I'm surprised at how so many people portray Jareth. They make him absolutely cruel and malicious, violent, without a trace of warmth or any redeeming qualities. He isn't gentle or wise, just wrathful. That's part of why he was so beguiling in the movie---sure, he's not a nice guy. He's a bully, proud and manipulative and impatient, but he's also softspoken, clever, romantic and hopeful, and those are qualities of good people.
I said to my sister, He's mean. He had no problem chasing her down the tunnel with a knife wheel and sending his army after her with cannons and spears. And she said, yeah, but you get the impression that the second things got out of hand, that she was in real danger, he'd have been there.
There's a fanfic I'd like to read. A Labyrinth trial gone wrong, and then a rescue. Oh, there'd be some sheepish explanations then...

LilLyon In reply to lily-fox [2008-01-04 19:11:07 +0000 UTC]
I didn't notice the Escher poster.. hmmm. But, yea, I love going through movies like these and spotting all the little hidden things, or the things you aren't supposed to really notice until the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time around. God I love Jim Henson (R.I.P)! And I didn't realize that George Lucas helped out with the movie, too.. dayummm.
Yea, I know! I guess when I was little I just thought of him as mean until the ball scene, which just kind of confused me as a kid, ... but once you get that he loves her (I mean, hell-oooo, Sarah even says, "The Goblin King fell in love with the girl"), and you watch it again, you can spot points where you can feel that love. He just doesn't want to be defied, because HE'S the one who's supposed to be in power. It makes me think about the part in "Magic Dance" that gets sung at the very end... "You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power..." As if to show that later when he goes back to the Underworld, if it's not that it's only a part of Sarah's imagination, that he thinks about Sarah and is like, "You remind me of the babe... the babe with the power" because of the last line she says to him. *shrug*
And, yea, he's totally clever, and romantic, and hopeful, and softspoken.
And it's not that Sarah doesn't care about him either, she just learns to take responsibility, and finds out who she cares more about. Afterall, at the beginning she totally said, "It's not that I don't appreciate what you're doing for me..." She uses sarcasm the whole way to cover up her feelings, probably. LOL.
And that sounds like a GREAT fic that you mentioned. Too bad I don't write fanfic.. hahaha. I never have the patience.

Aw, thank you! I do.
Months and months ago I accidentally hit a beautiful barn owl on the road to my house. It made me so sad, I took him home and took some photos of him so everyone could see him. He was just the most exquisite animal with a sweet heart-shaped face. We saved some of his feathers to make arrows from, and now I'm wondering if it's been long enough that I could go back and find his bones. Having an owl skull would be amazing, but then, I don't really want to disturb his rest...

Oh! Guh! I - I don't know how to express myself, it's like he's drowning or falling asleep, just completely in over his head. Of course I love how you drew his outfit, of course I love how you drew his hair, his face and the long graceful lines of his throat, but it is the coloring that completely undoes me. Subtle and yet rich, it's very hypnotic. My only objection, and this is because I'm such a labyrinth dork, is in my opnion, Jareth's character is a bit more brass in the movie. He's the kind of guy I imagine who would fall with his eyes open, never truly surrendering. Oh man, damn girl, i love this so much, how are you able to do this? This is going on my faves!!!
