Description Hello viewers!

Today I was thinking of ways on how to improve my space art... I believe I found a way for me .
I didn't put my absolute best into this because that would have taken to long and I need to get up at 6am (oh god) but I'm really happy with how this turned out!
If you see where I could improve please do tell , and also, don't say anything about the stars; I know .

Thanks for viewing.

That is pretty impressive: I've often wondered what a major river system flowing across a Pangaea-scale supercontinent would look like when it reaches the ocean, and this is pretty close to what I imagined: a kind of super-Amazon which affects the water across a large scale.

The planet could probably do with a cloudmap: given it looks like a mainly land-based world, you would probably not get as many clouds as Earth has (less surface water to evaporate). Also as has been said, the shadow looks a bit odd - I suspect the odd effect is also enhanced by the presence of what looks like another ocean near the terminator, but the "horns" of the shadow seem too close together.

Sorry to nitpick, otherwise this is awesome.

Thanks for the critique
This image wasn't really a full blown planet, more so a trial for using satellite images as my planet textures.

Once again though cheers for the comment

I'm glad you did the shadow like this. Everyone else does theirs with the round part going the other way, if you know what I mean. But I've been thinking and it would only be like that if another planet was casting a shadow on it. When you look at pictures of the earth from the moon with no planet casting a shadow on it or anything, the shadow is shaped like yours. I think it's better that way, and also much easier because you can just use inner shadow tool in blending options.

Anyway, good job it looks great.

I see where you're coming from but it really depends on if the planet being illuminated is "behind" or "in front" of the sun.
It also depends on your perspective. Take my Avatar for instance - that small planet would be somewhat in front of the star whereas if it were 'behind' the star then the planet would be more like my Planet Work pic.

Bad example but I hope you get my drift , and thanks.

OK Thanks for explaining that. I never really understood what causes different shapes of shadows on planets.

Whoaaaaaaaaa dude thats amazing!! great planet! So how did you get the 3d effect without distorting the terrain to much? Cause when ever I use photos like these and do the filter>distort>spherilize ... I lose aton of quality and detail. :-/

Mark-S In reply to Superiorgamer [2007-10-28 12:40:12 +0000 UTC]

That's what I did too only I shrank it and Sharpened it after each Spherize.

This is amazing, and very well done. I have to say, though, my favorite thing is that you put in a phytoplankton bloom in the water

ExplosionAnomaly [2007-05-18 00:13:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see something I didn't notice before. Right in the middle of the planet where the shadow starts, there seems to be a place (looks like a peninsula or Florida) where the ocean and the land just blend into eachother. Like a bad healing brush or something, you may want to look into that. It's right where the southern mountain range ends.

ExplosionAnomaly In reply to ExplosionAnomaly [2007-05-18 00:17:36 +0000 UTC]

And upon further inspection, the atmosphere could use some work near the south. It needs to be rounded out.
(I'm using my big mouth again.)
There's three dots I could see up at the top that are a high saturation red. Looks like you embossed and they didn't erase right.
Last thing.
I'm not one to say, but the north part of the ocean looks unrealistic (but cool! Don't change it!). The only time I've seen water like that is in really, really shallow places in the tropics.
But like I said, don't change it, it's cool. That's only if you want to make a really boring planet.

Did I forget to say that this is the best planet piece I've seen?

I did.
I'm sorry.

I want my own satellite so I can get my own satellite images to work with

This is amazing. Did you color any parts by hand? Magic wand + fill? Brushing?

As well, hate to ask you without reading all of the comments, how did you make the clouds? Photos? Brushing? Magic?

Photoshop, just got a couple satellite photos, blended together and spherized.
Really quite easy aye .

i agree with a lot of the comments about the shadow. if you are going to go for that shape with the shadow, i would just recommend the lighting filter. otherwise, excellent job

LitoNico [2006-02-16 00:30:14 +0000 UTC]

Nice bumps, and the texture itself is superb. What method did you use for the bumps? Shadow is a bit funny, perhaps fade it and desaturate the night side. Come to think of it, perhaps an overall slight desaturation might help. Did you make the beautiful texture yourself or is it a sattelite photo? I don't remember seeing any texture that size on NASA.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mark-S In reply to LitoNico [2006-02-16 04:35:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks . The bumping was easy, I just duplicated the original texture, embossed it and then set to a blending mode that I can't remember.
I do agree though, desaturation probably would help.
The texture is made up of about four to five satelite photos. Check 'em out here: [link]
There is some amazing stuff in there.
