Description
“What?”A mix of skeptical, bewildered, mildly impressed
And sometimes a little disgusted.
“You listen to rap?”
Behold, a specimen of middle-class suburbia
Spectacled, pimpled, messy-haired
Painfully awkward, unquestionably nerdy
Oh, and female, let’s not forget about that.
“Haydn and Beethoven; yup, that’s definitely your jam
During your late-night chemistry revision sessions
On your wild nights, maybe some Katy Perr – wait, what?
You listen to rap?”
Yes, I listen to rap
(Although I do still listen to Haydn
Toting Bach and Biggie together
Gets you strange looks from HMV cashiers, let me tell you)
And yes, I do actually enjoy it;
I’m not that kind of ironic listener.
After the initial double-take,
The curious follow up with “Why do you listen to rap?”
Like Victorians questioning a returning anthropologist
Who’s been in among the natives
(For the record, I find this more funny than annoying
So please don’t think I’m being spiteful)
Whereas those who also listen to rap
Go “Do you want a listen? There’s this guy you really need to hear...”
These are good questions, and I’m happy to answer them.
Where it turns sour
Is when the curious “Why?” is instead a “How?”
As in “How do you listen to rap?”
As in “How do you even listen to that garbage?
It’s not even music.”
Guys, you’re breaking my heart here.
The thing is, you don’t have to love rap, or even like it
But if you tell me rap isn’t music, I will say
You haven’t
Truly
Listened to it.
Go listen to it. Do it now.
Really listen.
By which I mean don’t dismiss this genre
As the domain of the incoherent Sosas –
Zero rhythmic creativity
Incapable of rhyming without ending everything with “boy” or “yeah”
And ignorant lyrics not a millimetre deep
(Granted, those sadly do exist
And make me cringe and cry and wash out my ears
With the tears of my lost faith in humanity)
Don’t zone out and let the words become blank noise
Because you think they’re all trash, or too fast to understand.
This is rap
This is poetry with the power of a beat
This is music made to be felt at the bottom of your chest and the highest centres of your brain
Meant to be scribbled on a notepad and spat into a mic by the end of the day
Meant to be listened to with headphones, because your parents probably shouldn’t hear this
And you don’t want to turn the volume low
Stripped bare of melody, armed only with their own rhythmic flow
The words stand alone and speak for themselves
Eviscerating anger, pretention-free tenderness
Crackling, crooked humour, hope hidden in the wisdom of the despondent
Expose themselves to the elements, and thus
Become vulnerable, and to the listener, tangible
This is rap
This is the music of the rose that grew from the concrete
Who read Shakespeare in school but never got a chance
And so wrote his love letters to his mother and his dispossessed people
Over a drum machine and a 90s beat
The music of the ageing genius trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle
While laying his demons to rest and raising one last middle finger to the world
Of the kids rapping in their basements trying to make a dream
Of those who only need one mic
To speak to generations of heartbeats
To reach out to lost and angry teenagers
And those who are still that teenager inside
To give soul and spunk to those who need it
To make a shy and awkward 11 year old girl
Sit up, and take notice.
For what I’m trying to say, words alone can’t do justice
I have over-artsy-fied it, over-romanticized it
Over-intellectual-pick-it-apart-ized it
I have under-beat-ified it
Under-to-all-the-ladies-in-the-place-with-style-and-grace-ized it
Under-when-you-heard-the-Control-verse-for-the-first-time-and-it-felt-like-something-had-detonated-ized it
Trapped in plain text, it’s lost the spark that living rap has
Because really only the music can say what it has to say.
Words and words, essentially saying
That yes, I listen to rap
And yes, I love it.
In the end, it can be distilled to this:
I’m talking about poetic justice, poetic justice
If these hands put headphones on your ears, would you trust them?

I get a similar reaction when people realize I like rap. I have never been a "gangsta". I've been a nerd, a goth, and someone who looks like a metalhead, but acts like a punker, but never a thug. They are even more surprised when I start to freestyle, or when I show them my mixtape made with only a cassette deck and a ps2. Rap gets a lot of unnecessary hate (unless we are talking about newer, mainstream, radio garbage, in which case it actually does usually suck.), but I thoroughly enjoy some of the older stuff. Still hate the fuck out of dubstep, though. That shit literally fills me with violent urges.

This is just a pent-up way of your brain saying "I want to rap". You should follow what your brain says, sometimes good things come out of it.

Bah, I could feel your brain cringe as you wrote that. How do you know you can't rap without trying? When you were a baby did you think "I'll never be able to walk gahgahgoo"? Probably not, cause you were a baby. But now look at you, walking around like you've been doing it for most your life. Everybody can do anything, we're just shit at the anything until enough time says we're not shit. SO GET OUT AND RAP.

Thank you very much! Several people have mentioned that, it wasn't intentional, but it's pretty cool that it turned out that way .

Although I couldn't fully identify with the poem since I'm not a rap person, it was amazing and inspiring to see the passion you put in those words. This was a great way to defend your tastes and freedom of choice. People who haven't eaten cake have no right to say cake's wrong, right? On another note, I get the same reaction when I say I listen to rock (especially when in a dress, high heels and fancy hairdo).
Thanks for a delightful read!

And thank you for your delightful comment! That's great to hear, a lot of people seem to be relating to this poem, even those who aren't fans of rap, which I find to be pretty neat. I also listen to rock, so I know where you're coming from.
Thanks for the favourite too, by the way .

This is actually the second time I read this piece, but I said the words out-loud to get a bigger picture of the beat; both times had an impact on me and almost-singing it out-loud was...kinda fun
So thank you for writing this piece, helping to give a new view on things. I may give rap a try sooner or later

Brilliant. This is truly brilliant. I myself am a huge rap fan and what you say here is spot on in every area. And you put it together in a very funny and entertaining way, I was saying "I mean I write poems in these songs, dedicated to you when" in my mind as I read the last two lines. There are not a lot of literature posts on here I feel deserve a Daily Deviation but this ain't one of them.

yeah... i listen to a lot of music. i can understand people having a stereotype against rap, but that's because it's popularized as being unclean. but really, ive actually developed a taste for it. people who have known me for a long time are often shocked to learn that i listen to rap. not as often as other music, but i do, and i enjoy it. it's music, and like all other music, it carries a thought, an emotion, a story.

This is pretty much the response I get when I mention that I listen to rock and metal. I listen to a bit of rap, too.
This is fantastic. My favorite part is the last stanza; the last line especially dealt a huge blow to my brain.
Love it, love it, love it.

I listen to quite a bit of rock as well, and it triggers pretty much the same response as when I tell people I listen to rap . Thank you very much! I was having a bit of trouble thinking of how to end the piece, and then I realized that a lyric from one of my favourite rap songs, if tweaked slightly, would work quite well, so that's what I used.
Thank you so much, both for your thoughts on my piece and for adding it to your collection !
