Description
“What?”A mix of skeptical, bewildered, mildly impressed
And sometimes a little disgusted.
“You listen to rap?”
Behold, a specimen of middle-class suburbia
Spectacled, pimpled, messy-haired
Painfully awkward, unquestionably nerdy
Oh, and female, let’s not forget about that.
“Haydn and Beethoven; yup, that’s definitely your jam
During your late-night chemistry revision sessions
On your wild nights, maybe some Katy Perr – wait, what?
You listen to rap?”
Yes, I listen to rap
(Although I do still listen to Haydn
Toting Bach and Biggie together
Gets you strange looks from HMV cashiers, let me tell you)
And yes, I do actually enjoy it;
I’m not that kind of ironic listener.
After the initial double-take,
The curious follow up with “Why do you listen to rap?”
Like Victorians questioning a returning anthropologist
Who’s been in among the natives
(For the record, I find this more funny than annoying
So please don’t think I’m being spiteful)
Whereas those who also listen to rap
Go “Do you want a listen? There’s this guy you really need to hear...”
These are good questions, and I’m happy to answer them.
Where it turns sour
Is when the curious “Why?” is instead a “How?”
As in “How do you listen to rap?”
As in “How do you even listen to that garbage?
It’s not even music.”
Guys, you’re breaking my heart here.
The thing is, you don’t have to love rap, or even like it
But if you tell me rap isn’t music, I will say
You haven’t
Truly
Listened to it.
Go listen to it. Do it now.
Really listen.
By which I mean don’t dismiss this genre
As the domain of the incoherent Sosas –
Zero rhythmic creativity
Incapable of rhyming without ending everything with “boy” or “yeah”
And ignorant lyrics not a millimetre deep
(Granted, those sadly do exist
And make me cringe and cry and wash out my ears
With the tears of my lost faith in humanity)
Don’t zone out and let the words become blank noise
Because you think they’re all trash, or too fast to understand.
This is rap
This is poetry with the power of a beat
This is music made to be felt at the bottom of your chest and the highest centres of your brain
Meant to be scribbled on a notepad and spat into a mic by the end of the day
Meant to be listened to with headphones, because your parents probably shouldn’t hear this
And you don’t want to turn the volume low
Stripped bare of melody, armed only with their own rhythmic flow
The words stand alone and speak for themselves
Eviscerating anger, pretention-free tenderness
Crackling, crooked humour, hope hidden in the wisdom of the despondent
Expose themselves to the elements, and thus
Become vulnerable, and to the listener, tangible
This is rap
This is the music of the rose that grew from the concrete
Who read Shakespeare in school but never got a chance
And so wrote his love letters to his mother and his dispossessed people
Over a drum machine and a 90s beat
The music of the ageing genius trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle
While laying his demons to rest and raising one last middle finger to the world
Of the kids rapping in their basements trying to make a dream
Of those who only need one mic
To speak to generations of heartbeats
To reach out to lost and angry teenagers
And those who are still that teenager inside
To give soul and spunk to those who need it
To make a shy and awkward 11 year old girl
Sit up, and take notice.
For what I’m trying to say, words alone can’t do justice
I have over-artsy-fied it, over-romanticized it
Over-intellectual-pick-it-apart-ized it
I have under-beat-ified it
Under-to-all-the-ladies-in-the-place-with-style-and-grace-ized it
Under-when-you-heard-the-Control-verse-for-the-first-time-and-it-felt-like-something-had-detonated-ized it
Trapped in plain text, it’s lost the spark that living rap has
Because really only the music can say what it has to say.
Words and words, essentially saying
That yes, I listen to rap
And yes, I love it.
In the end, it can be distilled to this:
I’m talking about poetic justice, poetic justice
If these hands put headphones on your ears, would you trust them?

Thank you! I suppose listening to rap has affected what little poetry I write; it's not something I've thought of before.
A lot of people have been identifying with the piece in the comments section, which I think is great . Part of what the piece is about is how music can affect people no matter who they are or where they come from, and it's so cool to see people come together and share and talk about it.
Thank you for the favourite and for your thoughts on my piece!

This is a beautiful piece, and it has really opened my eyes. I'm one of those people who generally does not like rap... But, having read this. I'm going to go and try some. And really listen to it. Thank you.

Thanks for writing this, I used to be "people" but as I've gotten older I've been trying to give anything in music a chance, because if it exists, then someone listens to it and likes it.
I saw this quote once on a music video for a favorite artist of mine, "You know you're doing something right when half of your audience hates it. Because the other half loves it."

That's great to hear! I find that with music and with art in general it's always good to keep an open mind, because you never know what you're going to find and/or fall in love with.

I used to be big into rap when I was younger; now I've lost interest. That's not to say the genre isn't good, I just listen to other things. The same goes for a lot of other genres, and I've found that almost every genre of music has its share of good and bad songs/artists and it's unfair to pass judgment on the entire genre because of a few (or a lot of) bad experiences. All musicians have the capability to either share some insight into their world (whether that message is deep and widely applicable or more personal) and I believe the most important factor in what makes a song good is the profundity of it message, and an artist can say something important in any genre.

To be honest my period of being totally obsessed with rap was a couple of years ago. Nowadays my musical tastes have broadened, but it still holds a major place in my heart. And yes, I definitely agree! The quality of the music depends on the individual artist or even the song, and not just the genre. It depends one's personal tastes as well, but that goes without saying.

Sorry man, but, NO FUCKING WAY, more seriously I don't think any of these guys could ever reach the level of poetry and musical skills that PF reached... So to say they has been outdone by some rappers is pretty unconceivable to me

I'm not gonna try to change your mind. Not that I think you're stubborn or something like that, but I know how great Pink Floyd is and Pink Floyd is brilliant and then some, and my favorite album will always be DSOTM. It has been for 8 or so years now, since I first heard it. But when it comes to rap it depends on who you're listening to. I listen to Pink Floyd on a daily basis, I could never get rid of listening to them entirely, them or bands like King Crimson, Yes, Television and Hendrix. Oh and Led Zeppelin of course. They're all just too amazing and I wouldn't want to. I also listen to some progressive rappers in the same vein though. Rap has become such a monetized and monopolized genre that the real talent is buried under the trash on the radio.

Aww, that's a shame. I, like neurotype, listen to both rap and Pink Floyd. It really comes down to personal taste, so I don't blame you if it's not really your thing. I'd still encourage you to give it a shot, though, maybe ask some friends who listen to rap to recommend some artists that might be to your taste .

Thank you for giving me perspective. I've always thought of music as poetry in a way, but never before have I let that view be turned towards rap. I suppose I was being too narrow-minded. I think I'll have to take another listen, and I have a feeling I'll like what I find. Thank you, again: I feel people underrate perspective, however it can change our whole entire world.
Congratulations, too! I'm happy to see someone's beautiful and brave thoughts rewarded. Have a great day!

I don't really listen to rap, mostly because I don't mind what music I listen to, but I just to hate it until I realized it had a really cool rhythm (most songs have to, to be played on the radio) and I really like that slam poetry sounds a bit like a rap (or is it vice versa?) because it just catches your attention. Though, of course there are some lyrics like that, which is really sad.

It was the rhythm for me too that first caught my interest in rap. I remember the first rap song I seriously listened to, and while it was a fast song and at the time I only had a good enough ear to pick out about half of the words, I remember feeling like "Wow.....okay, I need to listen to some more of this."
Thank you for your thoughts on my piece !

Why should people care about what kind of music they listen to? If someone listens to a genre I don't like/isn't all that popular/never even heard of, I'll just say, "That's cool," and move on.

So... ever try Lupe Fiasco or Tech N9ne?

For sure!
I only have Anghellic. It's pretty catchy, the one that keeps getting stuck in my head is 'It's Alive.' There's a certain amount of exploration of god, but Lupe does that too so eh. (I saw him live and it was aweeeeeesome. His mom wanted to know when he was getting married.) If you like more deliberately shocking shit, Die Antwoord is great. I feel like if I keep blasting them in the suburbs I'll get pulled over, though.

Even when it's not rap, this can still happen. I listen to alternative rock a lot, which would probably shock most of the people I know if they ever found out. (There's a reason I don't tell them...) Because I come across as a 'good girl' to most people I meet on a regular basis, they expect a certain type of music, and it isn't 'alternative' anything, let alone rock.
I haven't heard a lot of rap, so I can't comment on the music style, but you've definitely done a very good job of portraying it in plain text. Congrats on the DD - this is a really good piece!

Ayy, another 'good girl' who listens to alternative rock! I know how you feel; I'm rather quiet and do well in school, and so when I tell people that I listen to rock they react pretty much in the same way as when they learn that I listen to rap. Thanks for the favourite and for your thoughts on my piece !
