Description
“What?”A mix of skeptical, bewildered, mildly impressed
And sometimes a little disgusted.
“You listen to rap?”
Behold, a specimen of middle-class suburbia
Spectacled, pimpled, messy-haired
Painfully awkward, unquestionably nerdy
Oh, and female, let’s not forget about that.
“Haydn and Beethoven; yup, that’s definitely your jam
During your late-night chemistry revision sessions
On your wild nights, maybe some Katy Perr – wait, what?
You listen to rap?”
Yes, I listen to rap
(Although I do still listen to Haydn
Toting Bach and Biggie together
Gets you strange looks from HMV cashiers, let me tell you)
And yes, I do actually enjoy it;
I’m not that kind of ironic listener.
After the initial double-take,
The curious follow up with “Why do you listen to rap?”
Like Victorians questioning a returning anthropologist
Who’s been in among the natives
(For the record, I find this more funny than annoying
So please don’t think I’m being spiteful)
Whereas those who also listen to rap
Go “Do you want a listen? There’s this guy you really need to hear...”
These are good questions, and I’m happy to answer them.
Where it turns sour
Is when the curious “Why?” is instead a “How?”
As in “How do you listen to rap?”
As in “How do you even listen to that garbage?
It’s not even music.”
Guys, you’re breaking my heart here.
The thing is, you don’t have to love rap, or even like it
But if you tell me rap isn’t music, I will say
You haven’t
Truly
Listened to it.
Go listen to it. Do it now.
Really listen.
By which I mean don’t dismiss this genre
As the domain of the incoherent Sosas –
Zero rhythmic creativity
Incapable of rhyming without ending everything with “boy” or “yeah”
And ignorant lyrics not a millimetre deep
(Granted, those sadly do exist
And make me cringe and cry and wash out my ears
With the tears of my lost faith in humanity)
Don’t zone out and let the words become blank noise
Because you think they’re all trash, or too fast to understand.
This is rap
This is poetry with the power of a beat
This is music made to be felt at the bottom of your chest and the highest centres of your brain
Meant to be scribbled on a notepad and spat into a mic by the end of the day
Meant to be listened to with headphones, because your parents probably shouldn’t hear this
And you don’t want to turn the volume low
Stripped bare of melody, armed only with their own rhythmic flow
The words stand alone and speak for themselves
Eviscerating anger, pretention-free tenderness
Crackling, crooked humour, hope hidden in the wisdom of the despondent
Expose themselves to the elements, and thus
Become vulnerable, and to the listener, tangible
This is rap
This is the music of the rose that grew from the concrete
Who read Shakespeare in school but never got a chance
And so wrote his love letters to his mother and his dispossessed people
Over a drum machine and a 90s beat
The music of the ageing genius trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle
While laying his demons to rest and raising one last middle finger to the world
Of the kids rapping in their basements trying to make a dream
Of those who only need one mic
To speak to generations of heartbeats
To reach out to lost and angry teenagers
And those who are still that teenager inside
To give soul and spunk to those who need it
To make a shy and awkward 11 year old girl
Sit up, and take notice.
For what I’m trying to say, words alone can’t do justice
I have over-artsy-fied it, over-romanticized it
Over-intellectual-pick-it-apart-ized it
I have under-beat-ified it
Under-to-all-the-ladies-in-the-place-with-style-and-grace-ized it
Under-when-you-heard-the-Control-verse-for-the-first-time-and-it-felt-like-something-had-detonated-ized it
Trapped in plain text, it’s lost the spark that living rap has
Because really only the music can say what it has to say.
Words and words, essentially saying
That yes, I listen to rap
And yes, I love it.
In the end, it can be distilled to this:
I’m talking about poetic justice, poetic justice
If these hands put headphones on your ears, would you trust them?

Congrats on the well-deserved DD! It's great when people aren't ashamed or discouraged about liking certain things. I'm sure my parents thought I was a little weird when I said I liked rock n roll.

Thank you, both for the congrats and for the favourite ! Come to think of it, I don't think my parents know I listen to rap
. It's never really come up, and ever since I've started mostly listening to music on my iPod they've been kind of out of touch with my musical tastes. That might turn into an interesting conversation in the future....

Ah, I see. I remember when I was just watching Youtube on my xbox (which is in our living room). I was watching Queen at Live Aid and my dad saw me watching it and was like, "Do you like Queen?" And I was like "Mm-hm", and he was like "Oh. Okay." It was a great talk.

The music is for listen, enjoy and respect.
It doesn't matter what kind of music people like, we're all different, why is that so hard to understand? haha
I love the rap to, like I do whit the Punk, Rock, Metal and Pop.
Yes, I'm weird

I supposed people who aren't so familiar with the genre don't really see the connection between the small, bookish Asian girl on one end of the headphones and what they think is usually a big, loud-voiced black man on the other.
Oh well, I used to find some people's negative reactions off-putting, but now I just kind of roll with it .

To each their own music, really. I mean, for example I listen to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and other rock greats on a daily basis just as much as I listen to modern rappers. And by modern rappers I don't mean what you hear on the radio, but the people who are actually progressing the genre, such as artists like Aesop Rock, Sadistik, Sage Francis and others.

I feel similarly when people learn I listen to heavy metal or alternative rock. They think it's just men screaming. (Which is actually death metal, but they don't know that.) I think they just don't like my kind of music people the meaning behind is is actually existent and not, "Girls, cliche love song, party, get drunk," stuff you hear on the radio.
Anyways, I really enjoyed this writing. I think you did very well conveying your emotions in an organized and constructed way without seeming boring or dull.
And congratulations on the DD! It was well deserved.

Thank you very much ! Finding the right emotional balance in the piece was a little tricky, because I wanted to be emphatic but not preachy, and I wanted to be neither overly melodramatic nor too detached. That's kind of what the last stanza was addressing; despite trying my best, I was worried that I had pinned down what I wanted to say in the wrong way. Butt seems like most people liked it and got what I was going for, which is great.
As someone who's also a fan of alternative rock, trust me, I know it can get a bad rep as well . Just stick in your headphones and carry on.

I'm gonna be honest here: I've given it all the chances I can afford to give, and rap still isn't my thing.
But you know what? I'd never put it down, never judge the people who enjoy it, never say that there aren't people out there with far more to their music than a song or lyrics I coincidentally can't put my own heart into.
It's so horribly cruel of people to stereotype something just because they can't "feel" it. Sure, there's mass-produced company-driven rap out there with little to no talent, but it's not fair to judge an entire genre by the worst of the industry's standards, is it? Just like with rock, or country, or pop, or metal, or even big-band and jazz, there's always going to be the bests and the great, and there will always be underground independent-born songs and mass-produced, great and terrible from either side.
And there's always going to be the person saying it sucks, just because it isn't their style.
But it's not fair to judge an entire genre based on one dislike, is it? I respect it as an art, albeit an art that's just not my style. It takes creativity and effort just like any other music.
Have those people who say "Rap isn't music!" ever played around on Soundation? Have they ever TRIED composing poetry, spontaneous drop-of-the-hat rhythms of emotion and beauty, and tried slapping together an entire album born of beats and straight from the heart to the mic? Have they ever tried making it sound GOOD?
Have they ever bothered trying to see how much heart goes into the people who CREATE this art? The struggles, the sacrifice, all the risks and heartbreak involved with making music and trying to make it big?
I'lll never understand why rap gets such a bad rep, when a lot of the same arguments can be said for other genres as well. ("That beat is so repetitive and annoying." "The song doesn't even have musical progression." "These lyrics are deep as the bathroom sink!" "It all sounds the same." I could say the very same things about quite a few popular pop-stars...)
But people can love what they want to love, and you know what? IT'S ART! All music is art at the end of the day, and all art's beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can't hold another human's creation to your standards and expect it to be a universal scale.
(Sorry, I just moved out of a very urban area because it wasn't the lifestyle I preferred. And I often got sneers and bewilderment when I told people there that I really don't like rap. But so few ever bothered to ask me "why" on that front as well, and these are feelings that have been simmering for several years. It's just an opinion, you know? Everyone's entitled to their own set of preferences.)

Thank you for your thoughts on my piece! It's great, you really articulated some of the key points I was going for.
I suppose rap gets judges particularly harshly because it's so different from a lot of other musical genres in that there's not really a melody and it's very rhythm and lyric based, and so it's not really what many people are used to music-wise. In my piece one thing I was pushing for was for people who hadn't tried it before to do so. As you said, there is plenty rap that is amazing and which talented artists put a lot of work into, and so if people try it with an open mind they may respect the genre more, or even come to like it.
Thanks again for the comment! It was a wonderful read .

Wonderful and poetic! I like that some of the flow of rap comes through in your cascading words, but you're not imitating its idioms with a heavy hand. You seem comfortable with your own story and your own style of writing, and that honesty fits the "tell-it-like-it-is" spirit of rap music.
I can identify with this poem somewhat. I grew up mostly on classical music, and my 8th grade self didn't think rap was real music. (I'm embarrassed to admit that now.) I was a music major in college, and a geeky, bespectacled music history professor gave my class some excellent advice: "If we're serious about being musicians, we have to be champions of ALL music." Later I found a treasure trove of 2000s rap on a secondhand iPod - all the stuff I missed in high school. Great beats, great poetry, great music, but it just took me opening my ears to appreciate it.
You put these thoughts in words better than I could have, and gave me new thoughts as well. I suspect that's a reason most people like reading what others write, or hearing what they rap about. A good wordsmith helps people realize how many experiences they share.
