Description
My very first attempt at worldbuilding from 2014 or so, a few years before “The Assembly” was conceived. Just like Assembly, it was made for roleplaying purposes. The idea was that each of the players would have their own “home planet”, and all of them would be connected in some way – however, this “connected” parts led to the introduction of spacecraft into the universe, which gradually shifted the focus and moved the whole thing more toward the space opera genre. Eventually, this space opera world had “budded off” into what would later become the Assembly, while initial home planets were rendered obsolete and non-canon. Original sketches of the map from back then were lost a long time ago, so this version was redrawn from memory.
* * *
As you can see, the planet had 6 main continents, as well a central archipelago. None of them had been given any proper names, and their geology and climate made no sense whatsoever. In addition, this planet’s system was geocentric, with 14 celestial bodies (7 suns and 7 moons) orbiting around stationary globe – so it was probably just all magical and didn’t have to obey the physics of the real world.
The Northern Central continent was the main one, being a home for a prospering empire ruled rightfully (and authoritarianly) by my edgy self-insert! Its northern-western part was mountainous, with steep cliffs and rocky shores, while the rest was mostly plains and woods – with some forests being so dense that their canopies formed solid, steppe-like surfaces above the ground. There were also special hills made from similarly entangle vegetation – inside them, there were narrow, ever-changing tunnels, some of which led to sources of succulent nectar, while some other were lead to traps similar to some carnivorous plants. Some hills were so rich with iron that their slopes and caverns were covered with rust. And there were also numerous swamps made of some viscous grey ooze – constantly foggy due to ooze fumes and populated by dangerous giant worms.
There is not so much I can tell about the empire itself, however. All I remember is that their cities were blobby and colorful, looking somewhat like coral reefs – even though I don’t know whether they were really made from some “land coral” or simply built that way. The main building, however – my self-insert’s residence – looked more like a blocky orange skyscraper.
The Southern Central continent, vaguely resembling a dog paw with all its adjacent isles, was mostly covered in endless grasslands – kinda like that classic Windows XP wallpaper. It didn’t have any natives, while the aforementioned empire had a few colonies there – which looked more like a giant metallic towers than coral reef, for some reason. Otherwise, there is not so much I can tell about it.
The Western continent had some rain forests on its jagged edges – but most of its lands were covered by giant deserts (possibly due to long distance from the sea). A huge lake in the center was surrounded by cities of some exotic, oriental-styled civilization, which was a rival of a main empire. The deserts were mostly empty and boring, with only some small mounting ridges here and there, like islands over the sea of sand – but they actually had their native population of nomads, who travelled from one such “island” to another on their sand-sliding vessels. Oh, and they also had giant sand-worms! Of course they had giant sand-worms – why wouldn’t they?
The Eastern continent used to have its own civilization – but it all had perished in some global disaster that also made and entire land to look like a giant skull! I don’t remember the exact cause of it, but it was most likely related to some supernatural energy source. When this source exploded, the clouds of dust shrouded to continent, blocked the sunlight and turned it all into a cold and barren wasteland. In addition, it also unleashed shadow monsters! And also some weird green crystals that eat people.
The Far Northern and Far Southern continents were both snowy frozen wastes, which… isn’t really surprising. They also both had floating mountains and some old, long abandoned ruins. And oddly enough, both were guarded by very similar looking monsters, which – as far as I remember – resembled white bipedal griffins armed with some kind of ice magic. I might explained it with the fact that some of the ruins contained magical portals that connected both continents together – a la “Legend of Korra” – allowing these monsters to freely move between poles, but I don’t remember for sure. Also, both continents had sources and geyser of some purple goo that was cold itself (and flowed on ice without melting it), but made all people who touch it spontaneously combust!
And finally, the Central Archipelago was a chain of rather small tropical islands in the middle of the map. They were lush and fertile, but weren’t colonized by anyone due to aggressive spirits that lived three. They were passive and incorporeal during day, but became tangible and very angry during night – turning into some Polynesian-styles stone creatures. They might do so by possessing actual stone statues that they carve while there is no intruders around – but again, I’m not sure.
The people of this world were represented by a freak show of random monsters designed with no rhyme or reason. Examples include such specimens as: slug-men with exposed brains; three-armed and nine-eyed humanoids, octopuses with their heads floating in translucent sacks attached to their bodies and many, many more.
The gods worshiped there were even more insane. I will not go into details of local religious practices – but in short, some deities included: a giant tree ent; a winged pig person with his rebellious son; a sapient cucumber; a pair of four-armed Hindu-styled goddesses; a trio of shadow people and SpongeBob SquarePants.
