How do you focus on one eye at f1.8 in a self portrait? That's impressive.

The right focus point and a lot of patience I've started shooting my latest photos at f3.2 or higher, simply to make that part a little easier for myself.

Great or small, there is always a hurdle to overcome when pushing one's boundaries. Taking this picture as an example, it is great to see you to do just that despite of the self-consciousness there was involved.
On the subject of variety, I tend to think that if clothing is a sign of one's personality, certainly one's makeup is also part of that image and impression one wants others to perceive. Considering how you have been changing your hair and applying different degrees of makeup in your pictures, these go already to great lengths to change your appearance and thus image you're conveying. Hence the question, what kind of roles, images or emotions you could illustrate with the further use of clothing and makeup available to you..? For example, this profile picture of yours made me think of an image of a young female executive completed with a white shirt, jacket suit, thinly rimmed classes, hair tied up and confident no-nonsense glance at the camera. This is not to say you should do just that, just that when looking for variety, you may already have tapped some resources for it.

You're absolutely right. I've already pushed myself a lot when it comes to photographing (particularly when it comes to self portraits), but there's still a long way to go. Luckily the journey isn't too bad I wish I could experiment more with clothes in photos, but I've never really felt like I could make them work. Once my finances allow me to expand and vary my wardrobe more, maybe I'll try

True, if theΒ deviced role or means to highlight it does not feel right, presumably that lack of faith may showΒ in the picture also, thus undermining the otherwise good effort. But before going for a shopping spree, have you reviewed your friends' wardrobe to find something useful..? After all, it needs not be an entire collection...

wow...you always stun me with your beauty. I like the use of just natural colors. Your eyes have a beautiful cool blue to them. Some people are afraid of their freckles, but I believe freckles are beautiful. The one thing which someone else below mentioned was expression. It looks more like alone than wait. Sometime when I work with models or doing portrait work I try playing music that helps set the tone in the background or I talk to them to set a picture in their mind and help them get into an emotional frame of mind for the look I'm going for.
However, I love the photo. You rock as always!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

Great 3/4 pose. I like the lighting, but I find myself wishing you showed more emotion in your expression. It need not be perky or over the top happiness, nor anger or disgruntlement, but something definable. I feel this is lacking in feeling as your eyes and lips seem to convey a zoning out or a daze making for a very neutral mood and response. Anything, even a mischievious half smirk like you know something we don't or a quirked eyebrow, would add a visual element that engages the viewer.

But that's my own opinion, and I don't attest that I am even correct or that others would agree. It's just my gut instinct. Personally, I like to see some emotion, smiles, anything.

But in technical terms of photographing (and not of modeling) you did a great job capturing and processing a portrait. I've seen so many dead on headshots from you that I really enjoy seeing the variety of this 3/4 shot. It looks good, you should do more. Also, feel free to experiment with medium shots, long shots, etc. as well. Change up the overall look, if you can and you have the space for it. You do really good work and you should feel free to play and experiment if you can. But, overall, this is as well done and amazing as all of the portraits I've seen from you since I started watching. You do good work.

Thank you very much! I definitely agree with you on the expresion, it's something I feel I'm always struggling with and trying to work on. I'm thinking of starting a project where I pick out a random emotion and try to work out the photo from that... I image it would be a really good way to show emotion without going too overbord or being to obvious about it.

Unfortunately I don't have the space to do much wider shots than this at the time... I wish I did, my most popular photo ever was a medium shot So I have to try to create some variations in other ways, which is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I've always been self-conscious about my profile, which is why I haven't done a shot like this before.

I really appreciate your feedback, thank you

Great comments by SirSillyBoy ! Β I'll add just one point -- don't be afraid to over-do those emotions. Β Exaggerate, at least at first. Β Stretch that expression as far as you can take it. Β Over-act. Β Be silly even. Β Get over the emotion of beingΒ embarrassed or shy. Β Become used to your face twisting around in all kinds of uncomfortable ways. Β I think that may help you to get past the sticking point and may give you the emotional freedom to let your face reflect those other very real expressions that are right now hiding behind your "pretty face" mask.

I'm looking forward to some exciting things!

I think starting from an emotion is a marvelous idea. I would love to see such a series. If it is a struggle, I think the best thing to try for now is just letting go. Don't think or overthink it, don't worry about it, just relax and do. Sometimes, all you need is to be at ease.

I imagine the challenge of working variety in when you have little option is only making you a much stronger photographer and teaching you to be more creative at problem solving on your feet. It's the last bit, being quick on your feet, that can make a difference.

I can understand the shyness, but I see little reason to worry about your profile. Perhaps a few more portraits like these and you'll see you have nothing to worry about from all the glowing comments you are sure to garner.

You're welcome. Take all my comments with a grain of salt and just keep at it. You have great talent, so continue to follow your gut instincts.
