Description It’s been another long while lol. But I’ve finally done my version of Barry the Rescue Engine! I wanted to do him since the start of this year but had other stuff going on like real life and other projects or wanted to do something else lol. Here’s my headcanon anyways:

Barry was not a BR Standard Class 2 like he's suppose to be originally, but in my AU, he is an LMS Ivatt Class 2. He was built in 1952 as the last batch of 2-4-2T tank engines and began to work in South England for most of his life whilst in BR days.

It wasn’t until he was withdrawn he was sent up north to Woodham Brothers, otherwise known as Barry Scrapyard. He sadly would remain there, laying waste in the sidings with other engines, whilst his siblings would get rescued and preserved, he would continue to gather rust. That was up until 1978, when Stephen Hatt whilst looking for another engine with his father in the scrapyard took notice and decided to buy him for his railway to help Arthur on the Norramby branch and as well as work on the mainline from time to time. Around that time plans were being made for the Midland Region to leave the branch line to cut further costs on it and the North Western would have full ownership of the line once again. Of course, Arthur wouldn't be able to cope with the work so another engine was needed and since he did so well, Stephen thought Barry would be perfect for the role as passenger engine along the line.

Barry didn't have a name under ownership of British Railways, he was just referred to as 'Threes; due to him having two 3s in his number, when asked for a name, Barry went for the one after the scrapyard.

The Ivatt Class 2 would then arrive to Sodor with Topham Manor (who was found at the same scrapyard and brought by Sir Charles Hatt at the same time). The Class 2 was in a much worse condition then Topham Manor though, with lots of parts gone from either erosion or being sold or cut up. He didn't even have his own side-tanks anymore! So it would be a very long time until he would be ready. Whilst under restoration, Barry would request to become a tender engine. Even though not seen as the best ethic for a tender engine to work on a branch line, workmen knew Edward and Winston coped fine on their own lines and work on the mainline might need extra fuel capacity. So it was arranged, this made the project go on for another year, with building a new tender from scratch; since all others were already scrapped or preserved.

At last, Barry then be steamed and set to work in 1983, five years after the start of his restoration. He had trouble at first, especially when a diesel with a history with Sudrian engines came back and Barry hearing about him and not having a good impression of diesels, trouble would've come very quickly. But it was soon sorted all out in the end.

Barry keeps his BR passenger black paintwork for remembrance of the engines who didn’t make it through the modernisation plan as well and has never changed it, he has also kept his own old number, but he is the NWR's official No.19 and is mainly referred to that in the documents that the railway has produced on him.

He works as the main passenger engine of the Norramby branch full time with his brother Arthur, running trains from Barrow-In-Furness, to Crovan's Gate in the morning and evening rush hour, whilst going from Vicarstown, to Crovan's Gate at midday, but mainly throughout the rest of the day does the trip from Vicarstown, to Norramby. Barry enjoys his new lease of life on Sodor greatly and he and Arthur are true brothers to one another and stick closely.

Barry’s personality isn’t big compared to others on the railway, he prefers the quiet life. But he does enjoy making jokes with the others when in a good mood, the engines have said he and James make a great comedic duo when they're together in good spirits!

Unfortunately, like every sentient being, Barry does have his flaws, he has a great paranoia so it does take quite some time to become friends with him until he lets his guard down. He has some anxiousness to himself and feels a bit spineless at times, not really going full-in with a plan if someone does it with him. But he is, like all the other Sudrians, a hard-worker and firm friend… once you get to him that is.

That’s it rlly! Hope you all like this art piece and my take on Barry!
