Description
Edit: To all of you whom are saying that 'Monday' is named after the moon, I am very aware of that, the joke is about it being named 'Monday' instead of 'Moonday' which sort of took away from the Moon's glory. Hope it's clearer now.

In Swedish:
-Måndag (literally Moon Day)
-Tisdag (I dunno where it comes from)
-Onsdag (Odin's day)
-Thursdag (Thor's day)
-Fredag (Freja's day)
-Lördag (I dunno about this one either)
-Söndag (Sun Day though in Swedish 'Sun' is 'Solen')
Well, way better than in Finnish. We have just screwed up the pronunciation:
-Maanantai
-Tiistai
-Keskiviikko(the only one with a proper meaning: Mid-week)
-Torstai
-Perjantai
-Lauantai
-Sunnuntai

Lördag = washing day. The day you get clean. It is from "löga sig" put water on yourself. That is really old swedish and is not used anymore. Although we still have the word "löddra" = foam from soap or similar.

"Tuesday" comes from the Saxon god of war, Tiw (their version of Tyr).

So you're going to say Moonday? Are you also going to say Odinsday and Thorsday?

Ahhh, but the days-after-me-to-mass ratio is lower for the Sun than the Moon. And lower still for Thor, god of thunder. Lower still for Wednesday Addams (who is secretly Odin, Thor's dad). And lowest of all for the giant butt.... Which sat.... On a turd.

Hah, I like it, but Monday does derive from the word moon. Same in Italian (luna, lunedì).

I was about saying the same thing !!
Here in Argentina "Wednesday" is Miercoles wich sounds like "Mercurio" (Mercury) like the planet.
The same with Jueves (thursday) sounds like Jupiter, Martes (Tuesday) sound exactly like Marte (Mars) etc.

Thoswal In reply to Bayushi-Tai [2014-06-09 02:31:30 +0000 UTC]
Mhm. Same in Italian. Names for days of the week are pretty consistent across languages, but while Miercoles and Mercoledì are based off of Mercury, I have no idea where Wednesday comes from.

PS: Your country and your language is beautiful, feel proud !!!!
People say that French is the language of love, wrong, i think that italian sounds more "from the cuore" !!!

Why thank you, I agree, however, I'm just an American who speaks Italian. Not an Italian who speaks English.
