Blank memeI AM IN LOVE WITH THIS FILM! I tag ("Just Lauren") because she never finishes a meme. AND she's IN this one. YOU'RE IT!
Memes are a fun excuse to draw lots of fanart. :3 I have a file without all the words on it...just the arts. I might upload some of these pics separately.
Some explanations? Regarding #7, one of the characteristics I loved the most about these creature designs was their vocalizations! It's the biologist in me. Most films use standard "monster noises." These guys make a pretty cool variety of more complex sounds. Regarding #8, I'm afraid that by reading the very different book inspiration for the film, I'll tarnish the story in my own mind. I'm very pleased with the film. Regarding #6, the two lovely ladies are some viking-ified friends. Chel likes to punch me. Very mean. Lauren is just Lauren. She wanted a purple Night Fury. His name is Nox. And I would totally be a penny whistle playing viking. :3 I'm in love with the music of this film! (Plus, I already own and play the penny whistle! Woo!).
*****
Super long, in-depth How to Train Your Dragon reflection time! Contains spoilers--read the following analysis at your own risk.
(If you've read this before it's because I posted a lot of it as a comment somewhere else. It's easier to copy&paste than rewrite the same thoughts.)
Being a weirdo who enjoys analyzing literature, I found myself wondering WHY HTTYD appeals to all of us so strongly... and among many, many other reasons, I've come to the conclusion that it's so appealing because the film itself is everything we look for in a movie without any of the negative aspects of either children or adult films. Unlike most children's films, the characters and story take themselves very seriously, and unlike adult films, this movie is free of the foul language, gory violence, and sexual themes that generally permeate the screen. I'm still impressed that, in spite of the main theme [killing dragons], not single drop of blood is shed on screen, and the only death in the film is of the terrible Green Death, which is just a great explosion of fire. The one time a viking [Astrid] successfully swings an axe at a dragon, her axe is caught in a shield that harmlessly shatters on impact.
Overall, it's a very well-rounded piece of literature with an uncomplicated plot driven by incredibly endearing characters that are portrayed expertly (including an antagonist that takes itself seriously and forces us to take it seriously). And of course, above all this, there is a cohesive, exciting, brilliant score which enhances the film in all the right ways. I've never listened to a movie score that's appealed to me this much--I can't bring myself to skip a single song. That says a lot. And there's so much depth even to the score, with its interweaving of melodies and textures within the themes. Often Hiccup is portrayed as the flute while Toothless is portrayed by the violin. It's incredible to listen to their melodies intertwine and dance, changing according to their moods and perceptions just as they do on screen.
Notice how Toothless's theme, although it begins as a haunting, foreboding violin solo, eventually becomes the playful, bouncing rhythm in "Forbidden Friendship?" Just as that scene shows us a new, playful, endearing side of Toothless, the musical theme that accompanies him shows us a new, playful, endearing side of the previously haunting melody. Soon the violins (which are typically symbolic of Toothless, along with the harpsichord) playing this new variation of the tune are joined by a flute (which typically represents Hiccup). The interactions of the instruments build with the interactions of the characters. So thoughtful!
I could go on and on and on...
But the bottom line is that it's perfect for all ages. Kids know when they're being "talked down to" or "treated like kids," and this movie does exactly the opposite. Its depth (in addition to many other aspects) draws the kids in for reasons they can't describe, and draws the adults in even more because we can relate to the the film and understand our reactions.
And golly, what respect for the characters to treat them as real people who can and do get hurt when they do crazy things. Hiccup losing his leg was the best thing that happened in this film, even more heart-breaking than the moments when we wonder if Hiccup is dead. Part of us knows he's alive, but losing a limb is a very permanent, damaging sacrifice he made in order to bring about change in his world.
Very good reasons to love How to Train Your Dragon. If you haven't seen it, go watch it.

I totally love the scene where Hiccup found that he is now just one-legged & how Toothless helped him (like Hiccup did to him before with his wing) too <3
Makes the problem and risks real.. (not like usual forced magic that keeps the hero perfect )
The score is so AWESOOME!
Can't sleep before I listen to it
OMG it's been a week and I'm still obsessed with HTTYD..
How unhealthy :/
My bro keeps teasing me about obsessing over HTTYD..
Well, wait until he watch it himself soon

Awesome analysis there I agree that because Hiccup takes himself seriously as a character audiences find him more relatable and believable, unlike previous DW films :/
Powell's descending notes seem signature in this soundtrack, especially with one of Toothless's/Hiccup's themes, but my favorite variation of it has to be in "See You Tomorrow" where he takes part of the theme and brings it an octave back up, and it sounds simply AWESOME (around the 1:05 mark). The song is all around bouncy and so much fun to listen too.
Oh, and by flutes did you mean tin whistles? I'm not 100% confident about telling the difference between the two by ear, but going from the Scottish flavor of the soundtrack I'm fairly sure it's the tin whistles he uses in prominence with Hiccup, especially in the previously mentioned song.
But seriously, I just think it's a work of genius to be able to seamlessly blend Scottish and orchestral music and create a wonderfully textured score. I think the odd song out is "Forbidden Friendship" which sounds futuristic/New Age (I just re-listened to it and I heard a synthesizer XD), but it's simply too gorgeous not too like *heart melts*
GAH sorry this comment is so long. It's hard not to gush about this incredibly awesome movie. It's the perfect marriage of the year: story, art, and music.

LOL I normally keep my comments quite short, but you gave such an interesting analysis in your artist's comments that I had to respond similarly
"Hiccup losing his leg was the best thing that happened in this film."
THIS. As morbid as it sounds, I completely agree because it seemed to tie all the events together into something meaningful and delicate, yet powerful at the same time. The shot that wrenched my gut the most is when we see Toothless helping Hiccup to the door, and you get a very clear view of Hiccup's prosthetic and Toothless's missing tail fin. I almost cried in the theatre D: Nevertheless, I want to see more fanart of that scene.
I see from an earlier comment that you're planning to watch this for the sixth time XD I've seen it *only* four times...gosh, this is such an unhealthy obsession, but it's not our fault that it's such a great movie! Though I do remember someone that said she saw Wall-E 7 times O___O

Nimfalas In reply to avatarmirai [2010-04-25 01:26:25 +0000 UTC]
Oh my goodness, I completely agree. I DID cry. My mom cried. A woman behind us (on my fifth time) audibly sobbed. It's a very effective moment with a huge impact on us poor viewers. Ooooohhhh I love it.
And more fanart only if it's 'good' fanart (whatever that entails). lol. Some of the stuff I'm seeing almost ruins the movie for me. Especially weird stuff... like Twiccup... AH! *runs away*
Unhealthy obsession indeed. My roommate walked in on my drawing Toothless again the other day and she actually told me she was "worried about me" because it seemed like I was "becoming obsessed." Hahaha...oh, that's probably not funny... So unhealthy. I'll hold to YOUR lovely excuse that you brought up. It's not our fault!! They made it too good!

avatarmirai In reply to Nimfalas [2010-04-26 12:19:48 +0000 UTC]
I would normally be repulsed by Twiccup, but anthro!ToothlessxHiccup overshadows all shippings in terms of weirdness for me. Rule 34 applying, I bet there's someone out there who hasn't even bothered to include the anthro part. I believe it's entirely possible to love someone completely without it having to be sexual, you know?
Haha, glad to see your roommate watches out for you I periodically get these "art drives" where I would just draw on my computer for a few days (my only breaks are eating and sleeping) and ignore homework for that time, but she lets me do whatever I want.

Oh, I absolutely, absolutely agree with you. @__@ It's scary. Relationships don't revolve around sex. I love the sweet innocent, loyal relationship of Hiccup and Toothless. To distort that is just absolutely twisted.
If I were your roommate, I would at least slap your wrist once in a while. hahaha... (Hey, I'm just glad you eat and sleep during that time.) Admittedly, I have deprived myself of sleep for the sake of these HTTYD drawing sprees. Ah!

Nimfalas In reply to avatarmirai [2010-04-23 18:58:44 +0000 UTC]
I absolutely agree with you!! Perfect marriage. I love the way you put that. I have to disagree about "Forbidden Friendship," though... Although it definitely has a new-age vibe, it's still cohesive with the rest of the score, especially when you realize that the moving playful rhythm and general orchestration align with the other themes in the movie. And like I said, the main theme of that song is the same theme we've heard all along with Toothless, just presented in a more cheerful light. :3 Also, it still manages to retain a highlands feel. Gee, I adore that song. <3 My heart melts too!!
Whoops, I think you're right about the tin whistle in that spot, but I did mean flutes (it is the flute in other places...just not this one lol). The flute and tin whistle share and exchange Hiccup's lines throughout the score. Like the harpsichord and violin exchange Toothless's lines!
