Description [edit] Wow... really? This is my most favorited AND commented deviation? Within the first WEEK of being on DA? Well I guess HTTYD is quite the phenomenon right now. (For good reason.) And thanks to the groups for requesting to add my drawing![/edit]

I know, I know... *shot*

It's not my fault! I just HAD to draw this instead of inking the next comic pages! I saw How to Train Your Dragon, and how can anyone NOT draw Toothless and Hiccup after seeing it?! AHH! Everything about the movie was wonderful. The simple plot was incredibly character-driven, and the characters themselves were all so perfect in their portrayals. It was funny, poignant, and oh, just...and the animation!

Drawn for my friend Chel with copic/prismacolor markers, faber-pitt pens, and a gel pen. Epic fail on Hiccup's leg.

*spoilerspoilerspoilerspoilerspoiler*
This is inspired by our favorite scene where Hiccup gets out of bed and discovers he didn't quite come out in one piece. It was just so adorable and touching when Toothless helps him hobble away. The little Night Fury is so reliant on empathetic Hiccup to fly (and survive), and now Hiccup relies on him just as much. SUCH a good story. A "children's" film that has the audacity to amputate the limb of their protagonist (what respect for the characters to treat them as REAL people who CAN and DO get hurt when they do crazy things!) and manages to capture the utter feeling of conflict and violence within the dragon/viking world WITHOUT shedding a drop of blood on screen automatically wins my full respect and my heart.

They made his leg get severed so that he could get a stronger bond with toothless, since they both had lost a body part, for toothless, part his tail, for hiccup, his leg. So they would be equal.

aw man I was bawling at this point of the movie. when Gobber said "Most of him" I thought "wait...what do you mean most of him?" and at first i thought Hiccup lost the lower half of his body XP.

I agree, having him loose his leg made the ending really powerful for what was originally a cute, touching kids' movie, and the shot of them supporting each other to the door where both of their "prosthetics" were visible really hit hard.
Nice job on Toothless' scales, but especially his expression of "Don't worry, Hiccup, I've got you "

I completely agree. I doubt I would like it as much if it didn't end on that note. It would be too... perfect otherwise. Too much a child's movie. And again, they treated these characters as REAL people who can and DO get hurt when they do crazy things. It added such a realism to this touching story. Guh!! LOVE IT!

It really is impossible to not go through an obsessive character drawing phase after seeing that movie. For me it was the twins and the zippleback.

Picture is beautiful! You got a lot of detail on toothless! He deserves that kind of attention. Keep drawing! Go Team![link]

I KNOW! The music is enough to make me cry! I listen to it all the time and I've been obsessing about for the last month with my english teacher!(we have similar taste in music)
What is your favorite piece on the soundtrack? Mine is either romantic flight or see you tomorrow, though the piano parst in wheres hiccup are amazingly amazing too.

Nimfalas In reply to Saylen2013 [2010-04-19 22:20:54 +0000 UTC]

AAAAAAAAaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Another soundtrack enthus! My favorites are "See You Tomorrow" and "Coming Back Around." Oooh and of course "Forbidden Friendship," and I adore "Test Drive." Can't I just like the whole soundtrack? D: I learned to play that piano part. Ugh, so beautiful.

Please forgive me, I'm such a nerd... but you seem like the kind of person who would appreciate random literary analyses! I've been analyzing the soundtrack, and there's a particular melody I like to call the "Night Fury Theme" which is absolutely fun to pick out of the music. I recently realized that this theme appears FAR more frequently than I thought, but it appears in a huge variation of keys and tempos and subdivisions that keep you guessing in spite of the unmistakable familiarity of the melody. In "The Downed Dragon" (at 3:55) the theme roars out in all its mighty glory when Toothless 'attacks' Hiccup, with an incredibly menacing, foreboding solo violin backed up by bellowing electric guitar and bagpipes. This same mysteriously menacing theme shines out secondarily in the harpsichord in "The Dragon Book" (around 1:05) when he reaches the empty page on Night Furies, the "offspring of lightning and death itself" or whatever it is he reads. And I just realized today that in "Forbidden Friendship" (from 2:19 to the end), which is a charming, beautiful rhythmic piece when Hiccup and Toothless are building their friendship, that eventually the same 'menacing' Night Fury theme is the dominant tune! But it's so playful and gorgeous that I hadn't put two-and-two together until about the third time listening. The composer is showing us a new, cheerful, sweet side of the same theme, just like the film is showing us the new cheerful and sweet side of Toothless, whom we had thought to be a horrible menace. As the piece progresses, the flute (which is often paired with Hiccup and I like to think represents him in many places) weaves into the violins, just as Hiccup begins to grow closer to Toothless. Again, during "Battling the Green Death" when Toothless and Hiccup are nearly drowning, unable to save each other, a desperate, despairing rendition of the Night Fury melody (3:50ish) sounds out, winding down and down just like the sinking pair...and if you keep listening, the original haunting violin solo of the menacing Night Fury slices through when Stoick dives back into the water after Toothless, the terrible Night Fury. They face each other at odds, each not trusting the other for a moment. At the same time, a deep male choir bellows out the tune along with the violin (representing Stoick while the violin represents Toothless, standing face-to-face). Once Stoick decides to save him (thereby acknowledging that Toothless is not, in fact, a terror), the orchestra erupts into a triumphant rendition of the "flying theme" of Toothless and Hiccup, while the violins just about kill their bows pounding out the beautiful secondary melody of Toothless's "Night Fury" theme below the soaring main theme, showing that Toothless's negative image (in the eyes of the vikings) has been erased by the triumphant positive image which comes out of his partnership with Hiccup.

Perhaps the most interesting thing to me is listening to the interactions of the different melodies and what those interactions imply. There's a lot of weaving of themes, and many many times the Night Fury theme can be heard as a floating, moving violin part underlying Hiccup's songs, especially during the flying theme. There are some fun, pretty oboe parts too. :3 *oboist*

I just love this score. <3 It's so brilliant. There's a LOT of thought that went into it. I really want to write a paper about this movie... Too bad I already have all of my English credits.. D:

Please forgive me for the rant. I'm such a lit/music nerd. D:

It's great to know that there are other people who are so moved and in tune with music that they can break it down the way that you did! You are a very musically articulate person! I thoroughly enjoyed your rant! I would love to have another when you get the free time!
