Description Not all animals used in taxidermy had died inhumanely, so think before you insult a taxidermist.

Lots of animals used in taxidermy are roadkill, actually. NO, they weren't run over by the taxidermists themselves, they were found by taxidermists.

If you don't like taxidermy, that's fine. When you spout bullshit that sounds like something PeTA would spread, that's not okay. By that I mean something like "ALL TAXIDERMISTZ R EVIL MURDRURZ!!!!11" is really not okay.

Stitching up an animal doesn't make the taxidermist the murderer unless they actually killed the animal themself.

Think before you fire your shitty arguments.

Most of the time, the animal died naturally.

This makes a good point. Some people even put their husband or wife up after death. They died of something else, not of hunting or whatever. There's one thing I disagree with though... it's the part that a taxidermist is not a murderer unless he killed the animal himself. If you buy an animal from a hunter you are just as responsible as the hunter himself because you pay for the animals' death. But I agree that blaming people who use roadkill they found lying around is a bit extreme. I personally think taxidermy is creepy though and I wouldn't want to hang out with one of those people, but if someone wants to put up their pet after death for example instead of burying him... be my guest.

Most baby animals either died of natural death, died due to a trapping incident, and even some are from zoos. Very few where shot unless it's a population issue, which are usually coyotes. I know a taxidermist on here stuffed a lion cub for a zoo volunteer who had been given the pelt after the cub died in surgery.
But if it's an older piece then there is a greater chance that a baby/young animal was shot, since laws on animal welfare weren't as strict.

As someone who loves taxidermy, I understand how it's creepy and that honesty is a problem especially on the internet. Usually I give people the benefit of the doubt.

Tanneries usually have extra capes or pelts, and tanneries don't kill the animals, just tan the skins. And very rarely have I even heard of going out and killing an animal needed for taxidermy. A lot of deer pelts (for example) come from deer farms and the deer are killed for meat. I've always been interested in spliced taxidermy, but beware it costs a very pretty penny.

I've heard of quite of few people who only use road-kill or nontrapped animals. I actually prefer roadkill over anything, since it's guilt free, and much better than the animal being run over by cars on the side of the road.

Yeah, in some states like my own, it's illegal to pick up roadkill. Really a stupid law.

The problem with roadkill is most of the time the pelt isn't usable because bateria love eating the protein that makes fur stay in the pelt. But as long as it's pretty fresh and it's not too hot outside the pelt should be fine.

I agree, I wish there was a way to know whether it was humane or not. It would certainly make me feel better.

And I have seen fawn twins where the mother had been hit by a car, and the mostly-developed fawns died with her. They're currently entangled with each other in a jar in the science workroom at our school along with a bunch of other morbidly fascinating things, including half a human brain.
Our school is weird....lol

It's not a classroom, it's a workroom for storage space/teacher work space. And we have a cat fetus too
That's kinda weird. The weirdest specimens we have are the brain and the fetus, although we have a lot of specimens. There's a really cute little bat whose wings are on some sort of frame so that the bones don't break in the jar

also, most people who hunt go to taxidermists to properly stuff them. So they don't really kill the animals, they just stuff them back up. so if people should be pissed at people for killing animals, yell at the hunters (but I'd prefer you not to)
