Description
Well this is the first tutorial I'm doing on Photomanipulation. This one involves the little know Displace filter. Its a very powerful filter with many uses. This is a basic tutorial on how I use it when I add textures to my photos. I hope everybody will find it useful. You can download the zip file or view it at [link]

Haven't checked this out, but the webpage version, which was very cool, nice and easy to follow and to see how the filter affects the piece is great...couple of typo's in step 4 though

ok this is absolutely awesome but, I must dispute a bit and see if I can't get some clarification.
1. "Change the blending mode to overlay and mask out anything I don't want."
ok I understand the changing the blending mode to overlay, but then you totally jump over here and start masking things out, question, how do you mask things out ?
2. Change the Contrast. How far up do we go, specifics would be super cool.
3. " Click on the background/pumpkin layer and fill it with 50% gray (edit > fill > 50% gray). "
alright, I tried just clicking on it for maybe options to "fill" but found nothing. I tried a few things and got lost. Could you tell me how to do this filling ? where to find the option to do so.
Would love for those things to be answered so I may try this method in it's fullest potential. I love your work and the fact that you are sharing a method really makes me giddy ( for lack of a better word.)
Thanks.

I figured some people might have trouble with this tut. I wanted to stay on the sugject of the displace filter and not wander off explaining masks. I put the pic next to step one to show the mask that I made. It called a layer mask and you make it by clicking the second icon from the left at the bottom of the layers pallet. You paint in ther using various shades of black to white. Black will hide anything you dont want and white will bring it back. Using this type of mask you can then fine tune what you want or dont want to show. My next tutorial is going to be on this subject of using layer masks, adjustments and clipping.....you dont want to miis that one.
How much to change the contrast? well it depends on the pic you are using. You want to make sure that you have plenty of blacks and whites and not to many greys because greys wont displace your image. This is where you need to experiment and by doing so you will learn how to do this.
The 50% fill............. in the fill dialog box in the contents area theres a box with the word use....open that up and at the bottom and you will find the dredded 50% fill.
Im glad you like this tutorial and I suggest to you that you go out and buy a book on Photoshop. Once you get a working knowledge of the program so many things will open up to you. Good Luck.

thanks man, copyed that to a notepad. Yeah I acctually wanna take the class provided at normandale here in Minnesota. My ex-girlfriend told me about it, they told her that most people don't even scratch the surface of photoshops abilities. Anyhow, I'll be looking forward to more tutorials and more artwork from you ! Thanks !

Nobody ever stops learning about Photoshop.....Ive been using it since Version 2.5 and I learning all the time. I must have 11 books here on Photoshop plus what I like to do is when I see a good tutorial I print is out. I have volumes of printouts here.
I know people just want to dive in and start making pics but you can make your work flow so much easier, faster and with complete control once you learn more about the program. Ive seen your work and its good....do some learning and you can take it to the next level.
Oh btw thanks for the watch. I should have one or two more tuts in about a week.
