Description This is a photo-manip for a school project I had to do. It took a long time over the past couple of days, but I am quite happy with the results. (I hope my teacher is!)

Here is a list of all of the stock art I used:

How did you create those wire arms!! They are incredible! I am trying to do a similar effect and I would love some pointers because I am very new to the digital world of art.

Unfortunately I had to use clipping masks only for my project, so in actuality, there are multiple photos of a few select wires that I intertwined and clipped. This was a tedious process and one I don't recommend lol

It would have been easier if I used other methods, like selecting and deleting, thus creating a smaller file size in the process.

It was very much like putting together a puzzle though, rotating, flipping, resizing, clipping/removing visibility in some parts.

Clipping masks are great if you want to preserve the photo to go back to it at a later time. But I figure, if you already have a copy saved and you save the new photo as a .psd, what's the point?

If you take a look at the stock imagery I used, and compare it to the cyborg, you'll be able to recognize where and how I utilized them.

I recommend picking up Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom in a Book. It has invaluable information in it, even if you want to photo-manipulate. Otherwise, search far and wide for tutorials, on DA and elsewhere. Don't just focus on photo-manip tuts, find varying ones that cover the multiple tools in PS.

This was my first photo-manip, it was challenging and rewarding for sure. I hope I helped LOL

Wow! Thank you so much for such a detailed response! It was really great. I was kinda hoping it was an easier process than I thought but it seems you really put it as much work as it looks. I ended up taking precreated wire masses and shaping them together like arms
Here is my final image if you are interested [link]
It was my first manip too and I didn't nearly have as much time as I would have liked to do it because it is due soo soon for school.

Thanks so much again

You're welcome! ^-^ Like I said, it can be a much easier process, another thing you can do is sketching what you want and then selecting your stock. Pre-created masses are great, and I used that in many areas of the cyborg. It's very effective in your piece.

I know what you mean about deadlines! I did the cyborg in 4 days! But I had to, too many things coming at me at once haha

Yes, I did see your masses and I ended up getting a lot of great stock from you
It really helped me from having to track everything down myself so I thank you again for that

and deadlines are EVIL!!!!

You're welcome! I spent about a day or two finding good stock. I did a mini sketch beforehand, but it turned out nothing like I anticipated. A lot of it was designed around the stock I found.

Congratulations! I see that you have been featured in the 24th edition of the News Journal, 'Digital Friday Favorites' [link], which I suggested and selected.

I must apologise for suggesting the DD. I notice on yours and another I suggested that it attracted criticism for both of you. It seems everyone is an expert I don't believe a DD has to be perfect, just original, well thought out and a lot of work put into it with just that bit extra that makes it stand out from the crowd and I still believe that cyborg-Project fits this criteria. Small mixtakes can be fixed

Thanks! I'll have to thank JunkByJen too!

Don't worry about some of those comments. I don't expect everyone to like it, hell, I don't like everything that I see on here. Even sometimes DDs! We are afterall, subjective beings.

What would be the moral thing to do is move along, and if you MUST leave a comment, tell the person why it is not favourable. "It sucks" and "I don't like it" is not constructive criticism. It's jealousy, angst, and anger.

And yes! I've taken what a lot of people have commented on into consideration! I think that with the constructive criticism, I can in future create even more well executed, as well as creative photomanips. I appreciated those comments, and I am still replying to many of them.

Thanks cemac, I appreciate everything ^-^

I completely agree with everything you have written. Jealousy and envy are such useless emotions and so destructive to not only the receiver but also to the sender. I have had three critiques and agreed with two and told them so. I fixed one mistake but the other is unfixable due to my skill level and lack of experience and one I disagreed with. I reconsidered the latter and told him that after due consideration I thought that he was correct and would fix it.....which I still have to do. All these critiques were helpful and I appreciate them as they make me check my work more carefully before uploading, although mistakes still slip through but then again I don't claim to be perfect. I think your attitude is a very positive one and it will take your far.

Some things you can't help, and some things you don't need to.

I got group face-to-face critiques 4-5 times a week for 3 years going to school. That conditioned me to take the most cringe-worthy criticism that would have made me blush and stumble years ago. Thanks so much for the kind thoughts too, I have the attitude that I will go far, so I shall! ^-^

(sorry for the late reply) I am not as resilient as you although if I was contemplating a career in the artistic field, which you obviously are, I would have to toughen up. I would think that what you have had to do would toughen me up too but as my art is only a hobby I will probably remain overly sensitive to criticism, unless it is worded appropriately and is constructive. I was able to draw and paint before I had an accident and an operation and am hoping that what I am now doing will retrain me to do what I was once able to do so very easily. If not, it isn't really a problem any more as I enjoy photomanipulation and overpainting.

NokturnasKikilias In reply to cemac [2008-10-15 13:12:43 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I'm so sorry to hear about the accident, but glad about your success in driving forward and still creating wonderful art! :affection:

Yes, the critiques did toughen me up. It was also for peer review, but to be able to handle customer dissatisfaction in a professional manner. Graphic Design is as brutal, in my opinion, as other artistic professions.

Something I found though is that the people that were the most critical during my critiques, were my friends! lol

cemac In reply to NokturnasKikilias [2008-10-18 12:25:34 +0000 UTC]

I tend to be overly sensitive because I still take criticism personally but am definitely becoming more receptive. I am surprised that your friends are so critical. They must like you a lot and be very confident in your friendship. My family are my strongest critics.

Our teachers had mentioned that they had noticed that students that were friends tended to criticise the most, and well, I didn't believe it until I experienced it! But it's good.

if you did it for school i think you could have it without 18+. mature content warning, fine. but with 18+ way less pepole will get to see it anyway. and if she's only partially naked you probably don't need to worry about people under 18 being warped.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NokturnasKikilias In reply to Skeleton-Dance [2008-09-22 14:13:10 +0000 UTC]

I'm not necessarily interested in more exposure. When featuring this deviation, I am sure admin would have suggested to take mature content off. I am not going to start stepping on their heels, I don't have a subscription.

I'm not worrying about young minds being warped, I think the media, parents and living situations do that themeselves. This is purely just following DA's submission policies.

If you want to see it so bad, there are ways to get around that: Contact admin yourself, and ask what they think. And I'm sure you can think of some more ways that entail lying.

As for school, I did 3 live drawing classes, where all of the models were nude. I am 23, and have been in college.
