Gorgeous picture. Looks like a good opponent for Lord Den from Battle Angel/ GUNNM manga:Β He's a giant cyber-samurai with a detachable centaur body, but can also go around two-legged.
So, main katana, wakizashi, Nihon-tou/ dagger, right? Did you know that, before the book "Bushido" romanticized samurai and ronin in the Meiji era, samurai prized their horseback archery skills higher than swordfighting? Not to say they didn't use swords, but that it was what you did when out of ammo. After all, just like Western knights, being mounted on a war horse and clad in armor meant you were rich enough to own and maintain horses and armor. The horse's gear is also a good place to mount the banner that was previously mentioned in these comments, which is vertical, narrow, rectangular, and on bamboo poles. It display's the lord's Mon (crest), and can be rallied around.
True katana were brittle due to problems with iron purity: Namahagane ("raw iron") is what Westerners would call "pig iron," but it's what was available in feudal Japan. It necessitated all that re-forging and folding and hammering of layers, helping to align the crystalline structure of the coke's carbon content on a molecular level, making the blades incredibly sharp yet brittle at the same time. They didn't have other good metals to add make a more solid steel alloy (or the methods or crucible temperatures to do that yet).
In other words, you have to slash instead of chop.
