Yeah it was tested on two PCs. I contacted wacom and they said they'd fix it - but i had to send it to germany. That was years ago lol.

Good guide. I would choose an Intuos, of course, but these are so expensive! A Graphire seems OK to start. I can't even afford that, but at least I can dream on solid basis. Hey, I can put one in my Amazon Wish List...

Obviously Trust has to be avoided...
I see there is also Genius and Adesso (never heard of the later). And UC-logic (xfc), DigiPro, Hanson...

that's a mistake.. It should be 3. I copied the Graphire title to change, but forgot to change the number.

Love this post! I upgraded to a new Wacom Graphire in December and plan on learning the basics of digital painting on it for now until I can purchase a Intuos. I hope you don't mind, but soon I am going to message you with a couple of questions about digital painting. Let me know if that is okay.

I start small for sketch and upres once I'm happy with those... Intuos 4 should be Intuos 3, I forgot to change the number. Thx for you comment...

I've Volito2....well I got it week ago. It works ok... the pen is very light weight. I think it is best for beginner to start with, before moving into advanced version e.g. Wacom Intous3. I want the Intous 3 though, so I'm waiting for it as well...

Great job, though I don't agree with you on the Volito 2, which is what I use. Great value for money, if you ask me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Norke In reply to Jonas72 [2007-02-19 23:53:43 +0000 UTC]

Well... I had to make differences in them.. I'm using the Graphire, and in the tutorial I say that's not for painters... Of course the Volito works just fine, but professional painters won't buy the Volito, if you know what I mean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jonas72 In reply to Norke [2007-02-20 01:13:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean, man. I would certainly buy a more expensive model if I could afford, the Volito's a bit tiny. But like I said, it's great value for the money.

Great article!
I own an old 4x5 Wacom Intuos 2, and I've been very happy with it, but I REALLY would like to have a Cintiq!
Have ever tried one of those?

Yeah, I was able to test a Cintiq one a large screen on the Adobe Con... it was awesome, I can tell you that.

Yay! for Wacom.

My first tablet was an Intuous, which I had for 7 years before it went to the asylum for old tablets. I bought a newer one to replace it and went for Wacom again.

They are so worth it as an investment I think. Though they have still to create the tablet that I can use to throw my body against to end up with the usual kind of art I produce

Johndead [2007-02-07 05:33:28 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I use the Graphire 4 series. 6x8 size. Great for photography like you said.

Anyone that wants to do serious editing, manipulation or even painting can use one of these.

Hehe... now everyone knows what to do with their tax return!

good stuff, but i believe you missed an important ingredient: a Tablet PC.
Try looking at one of those bad boys.

Norke In reply to TheSohnly [2007-02-06 01:58:22 +0000 UTC]

Same as the Cintiq... you don't want to know it, unless you really need it... :B

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheSohnly In reply to Norke [2007-02-06 04:30:57 +0000 UTC]

On the contrary. The school i go to has a Cintiq that noone uses (cause they just cannot grasp the concept or something, i dunno). I used it on my first painting (my only one actually. I guess its ok for a first one) and it is absouloutly fantastic to use. Just a magnificent piece of machine.
Tablet PC's are an affordable portable solution to many problems and requre no learning curve cause your just drawing on the screen!

Oh, by the way, I didnt think you checked all your mail. hm.
You are an absouloutly fantastic painter and I really love your style. Ive read all of your tuts and found them very informative. You should really teach a class on this or something 'cause you know how to explain the most advanced concepts to everyone while still keeping the basics down pat. You and should do a combined tutorial (cause he doesnt speak english very well).

I have no experience with any kind of tablet. ...nor what programs to use for digi painting. I am looking to start (hopefully soon) and don't have a big budget what so ever. I don't know if you know Justin Sweet's illustrations, but those are the effects I'm looking to go for. The look and ability to do work similar to oil paintings, as well as simply comic coloring. It looks like the Intuous is best, right? But are there any that you know of that are similar or equal quality for cheaper? I suppose my max price would be 3-400, but would prefer spending far less. What are some of the easiest progs to learn using these as well (getting the best effects - photoshop, painter etc?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Norke In reply to WadeFurlong [2007-02-05 13:14:40 +0000 UTC]

I really would advice you to go for Painter 9.5. This allows you to make digital oils and watercolors. It's really the best option to achieve such effects. Justin Sweets has that kind of oily feeling indeed. Apart from the program you use, you do need a penpressure tablet. If you really are into painting and you don't want to be to limited, then you'll have to go for intuos. That is the most useful one. [Cintiq is much better but that's more then 5 times the money you want to spend on it]

This is awesome! A clear fav from me. I myself am using a Graphire III, which is awesome. My girlfriend is thinking of buying a tablet too soon, should she buy a Volito or a Graphire? She only draws as a hobby and she is a hobby photographer.
