Description my lame attempt at explaining how i do fur...
i'm assuming everyone has a pretty good knowledge of PS, cause i didn't include the little screen grabs that show what tools and brushes i'm talking about..
but they're all quite standard, so hopefully everyone can figure it out

EDIT:
here's a little screen grab showing which brushes i was talking about... and yeah, the tool that in reality is called "smudge" I called "smear". same thing :}

You make beautiful fur! The detail is extraordinary. However, I am going to wait to try this technique until I get a tablet (if I ever get one) because I think trying to do this by mouse would drive me crazy! XD

Just curious, but how long does it typically take you to do the fur on a complete wolf then? O_o Even one ear is a whole lot of work it looks like.

But yaยด know, this is gonna take me months >.<" - especially because Iยดm a dimwit when it comes to fur.

I can't wait to try this out, it'll be my first time trying to draw real-looking fur. Your tutorial is so much easier to understand than some of the other tutorials out there!

This tutorial is being extremely useful and I'm like the effect I'm getting. Quick question however as I'm up to the dark and light hair part, do you do them on sperate layers ie. Dark hairs, light hairs, with the colours underneath or all on the same layer?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Novawuff In reply to VaerepireStudios [2010-07-24 03:40:21 +0000 UTC]

all on the same layer!

raven61116 In reply to Novawuff [2010-01-28 15:58:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty experienced with layers, not a pro, but I was just wondering, do you have to set any of them on multiply? and how do you go from using the line art to not seeing it at all? But thanks for offering to help. c: I didn't expect you would, since you probably have a lot of people asking questions. xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Novawuff In reply to raven61116 [2010-01-30 05:23:25 +0000 UTC]

By the time i'm done with my big images i usually have at LEAST 30 layers... set to all kinds of different blending options....
but for the little example in the tutorial, there were only 3. The background flat color, the sketch layer (which you COULD set to multiply if you wanted, but in this case it wouldn't matter), and then the layer with all the color & fur. The sketch layer I just turned off once I had established where all my shapes were with strokes of color. Didn't need it anymore and didn't want seeing it to interfere with my final image.

If you hated layers, the same concepts of sketching, blocking in, smearing, then drawing hair lines could be done all on one layer, like a real painting. Actually you could do this same thing in real life with oil paints. :} done it!

I followed this lightly for making my ear for my first wolf digital painting. I say lightly because the angle of the ref I'm using which is kind of odd, (maybe because I don't have much practice/experience)

I'll send you a link after I finish the rest.
